My Morning Jacket - Circuital (Jul 15, 2011 - 03:49) | he he was wondering if someone would pick my nit pick on my lack of upper case usage.
i only mention it because of all of the interviews i have seen and heard the band give concerning the album and hearing them pronounce it as i formerly suggested. i was saying it as you suggested before that but if it is their album i guess i will say it their way.
listening to these guys is always a happy experience in my hood. kanpai!
Proclivities wrote:Either pronunciation is probably acceptable. If something is "of a circuit" (i.e., electrical), it would be caller "circuital", which could be pronounced "sir-kit-ul". You may also be equating "circuital" with the word: "circuitious". This is just a personal, style preference, but if I were going to "nit-pick" about grammar and/or English usage, I would use the appropriate application of uppercase and lowercase letters when doing so, but that doesn't seem to matter much anymore. Good song, by the way. Happy listening!

My Morning Jacket - Circuital (Jul 04, 2011 - 02:10) | i hate to be a nit-picker, but when it comes to this band, i will be. bill keeps announcing the new album title wrong. its pronounced like sir-cue-ital. just sayin...and i know bill knows his stuff and i know that i like to be corrected when i've got my music wrong, maybe he would feel the same. only reason i added this.
on a different mmj note, yes i do think that this album takes us to yet another new space of the mmj legend and really begs to be jammed live. to those who have seen them tour already i am SOOO very envious and to gatorade who saw them at edgefield last week, i am SUPER envious. that is my home turf and i can't wait to be back in portland with the music there.
happy mmj listening all! dance it out and rock and roll

Neil Young - Motorcycle Mama (Apr 13, 2010 - 05:08) | i think that one of the things i respect most about neil is that he puts nearly everything out. whether or not it is his best, something he is really crazy about, something he mildly likes or something he just jammed in the studio. when he is in the studio the tape is always rolling and he is putting it out. he wants his fans to be able to hear him do all of what he does, even when it isn't "cinnamon girl" or "heart of gold". he is not making music for the money, he is making music because it is what he was born to do and sharing all of it with those who care/dare to hear.

I appreciate the eclectic nature of RP, but sympathize with jone_ston. There seems to be quite a glut right now of weak male vocalists. My wife refers to them using a vulgar term for a part of the female anatomy, and recommends that I don't listen to them for fear of of the de-masculinization of her husband. I have to agree with her, the whiny emotional man is starting to get old.
A cursory look at your song ratings shows that you have good taste in music. Not surprisingly, given that you are a RP listener. And I'm sure you and your wife are lovely people, and I have no desire to start something. But if I may... Although I haven't necessarily noticed the de-masculinization of male vocals that you speak of, let's just say for argument's sake that you and your wife have correctly spotted a trend. Well done.
But jone_ston's comment, the one that inspired my (admittedly, and uncharacteristically snarky) retort was not that male singers nowadays are whiny and emotional, but that they should sing louder and project. (He?) may well endorse your characterization of his original comment, but no matter; that only means that he shares you and your wife's opinion. I just think it's a weak claim. There is a long history of male vocal performance that could be placed into a "high and/or whiny" category, much of which I love, much I hate, and everything in between. Neil Young comes to mind. I don't like everything he's done, but in general, he comes close to deity in my musical cosmos. People always complain about his high and whiny voice. I can see why they say it, but I happen to love how he sings. It's honest and real, and moves me. I could list dozens of others that I love. And others, also high and whiny, that I can't stand, or ones that I can take or leave. I don't see this as a recent development, but that's OK. We can agree to disagree on that point.
My reply to jone_ston was a reaction to what struck me as a rather narrow vision for a very wide format radio service. I'm sure there are hordes of high, whiny, non-projecting singers who Bill and Rebecca are keeping outside the gates. And others who are let in. I won't like all of the ones that get in, but in general, I trust the gatekeeper. That's why I'm here.

It's a funky study in dichotomy. Check the lyrics: Nice Stevie: I'd like to see you boogie / right across the floor. Evil Stevie: I'd like to do it to you / until you holler for more.
Nice Stevie: I'd like to see both of us / fall deeply in love. Evil Stevie: I'd like to see you in the raw / under the stars above.
He does that repeatedly, even to the solo. Nice Stevie asking permission: "Can I play?" Evil Steve, bragging about his talent: "Can I play?!"
He obviously thought about this tune before committing it to tape. And that groove... Jebus, this was a high water mark. Love love love this song.

What about "Tony" by Patty Griffin? I think that this song has as good message as well specifically aimed at being LGBT in high school, but the use of language in the song can turn some off, if they aren't listening carefully...

To be fair, it wasn't just him - he was sharing the stage with Jim James and M. Ward. We'd been treated to musicians and songwriters of the caliber of Richard Thompson, Bela Fleck, Patty Griffin, Kasey Chambers, Jane Siberry up until then. When they came on, it sounded like a bunch of amateurs had ambled on to the stage.

In the previous albums Chris Martin was a distressed, lonely guy who was writing with angst that it takes to write really good material. Now, he's happily married, has a beautiful child, is expecting another one soon and heads the biggest rock band in the world.
Summary: Angst is gone, so is the amazing power behind it. But good for him, he's happy.

There are many wonderful covers to Hallelujah but IMHO, Buckley's cover transcends Cohen's piece, it transcends Buckley. With Jeff's verson, Hallelujah goes even beyond the term masterpiece. There are no words, no descriptions, no explainations that can put it in perspective. That's when you know it's art.
Yes, timelessness and beauty don't even come close to describing the feelings and emotions stirred and brought to heart by this song...it truely is art. Miss you Jeff...thanks for the music...

These guys are growing on me. I saw them on Austin City Limits last weekend. The vocal harmonizing really grabs me. And I don't normally care for that style of synthesizer. What's a good CD to start with, as far as MMJ goes?
The harmonies take me back to a simpler time (when vocal quality mattered). I'll take that any day over these twentysomething bands that sing off key (presumably because some jackass told them it sounded cool).
Right on man! Jim James has such an amazing voice, a true gift to my ears in this day and age of 'twentysomething bands'. You should start with either "It Still Moves" or "At Dawn". They are both great albums, I tend to like the songwriting a bit more on "..Dawn" but "...Moves" is a bit more upbeat and rockin'. You choose, they are all great really. This new album of theirs "Z" is very differnt from anything else they have put out. But, that tends to be their strength, they always put stuff out that didn't sound like what they put out before. Keeps fans on their toes and keeps this girl lovin' their style! Enjoy the tunes!

I love Patty Griffin but I think in general she's better when underproduced. "Living with Ghosts" is one of the all time great albums, and it's just her and a guitar.
True dat! "Living with Ghosts" is in my top five albums of all time! Don't know how for sure but have procured a copy of the unreleased album. It's good stuff, (as always from Patty) but not her best! IMHO

I just love the lyrics to this song; a moving, heartfelt love letter. It's been top notch for me for years. The song that introduced Coldplay to the world.

It's a mystery I guess, there's lots of things I cant find.
Its not the way that you look, but your move that catches my eye.
Why's it so soft when the cannons unload on the others?
Why're we so loud when we say it wont happen to us?
Why does my mind blow to bits every time they play that song?
It's just the way that he sings,
not the words that he says, or the band.

Mari- Thanks for sharing these lyrics. They are what make this song so amazing for me. One of my favorite MMJ songs! ...it's a meaning that I understand.

Fleetwood Mac - Tusk (Jan 31, 2006 - 09:54) | Had the volume very low, (as I'm trying to study, and not listen as intently) but heard this very distinctive drumming, and knew right off that it was my beloved Fleetwood! Good tune, good memories! Thanks Bill!

Based on his Wikipedia entry, his albums probably never reached my dad in Sioux Falls, SD. Too bad about the overdose - drugs have taken away so many promising artists before they got a big audience.
Since I'm a young'un, my great appreciation for classic rock of all sorts is solely through my dad, so if he didn't like it/never heard it, I wouldn't have been exposed to it.
Pretty good though.
We won't yell at you, although we will tell you that since you haven't heard Tim before that means that you've probably never heard Jeff either (his son). Listen here for him, he was a god with the same incredible range that his dad had. Sadly though, he is gone as well.

Nice observation, but actually they recorded in an old silo. So yeah they may have been more than 20ft away from the mic. It's part of MMJ's music that this girl LOVES!

Track #12, 'Phone Went West' was one of the very first MMJ tunes I heard. It is simple and very easy to love, IMO. #8 is also pretty killer, 'Christmas Curtain', jams along nicely. Don't ask me to pick though, I love the whole album. For more lively MMJ though, refer to "It Still Moves". I know tons of folks who love to jam this one as well. Happy listening, hope it grows on you, (and it will!)

The Cars - All Mixed Up (Jan 11, 2006 - 21:34) | I'm really dating myself and clearly going against the grain of most listeners here by saying that this version was not the first one I heard, nor the one I like best. Red House Painters cover this song and I think give it a nicer feel. I was just wearing diapers in the early 80's, what can I say, it's not my fault! A great song by any measure though.

Sigur Rós - Untitled Track 8 (Jan 01, 2006 - 00:41) | This actually compelled me off of the couch to see who this was. Awesome stuff. I think you either 'get' this music or you 'don't'. Disappointed to see that so many RP listeners 'don't'.

Muddy Waters was doing "Mannish Boy" with the Band, and Seamus (my son) instantly stopped crying and began to stare at the tv! As a HUGE MMJ fan who is familiar with their entire catalouge, I would have to say that Z is definitaly not my favorite. It is new and differnt, but every time they put something new out it is such, that's one of the things that I love about them so much. Their ability to make such differnt music yet still have threads that run through it all that make up that undeniable MMJ sound. May I make the suggestion though that next time you give the RP listeners more credit and know that we will all respect what one another has to say, especially about something as poingnant as this. It is my hope that we will not have to "tolerate" one another some day, but rather accept with open arms the differences that exsist in us all. Peace.

Dave Matthews Band - Digging A Ditch (Sep 16, 2005 - 12:34) | ...Wow! The first DMB song I have heard in YEARS that actually sounds a bit different and is pretty good. Lots of wasted talent in this band on the same song released under a new name again and again.
|
Ryan Adams - Wonderwall (Sep 16, 2005 - 11:17) | One of my favorite songs on this album. Ryan does an EXQUiSITE cover of this song. It's just a shame that their are those of you out there that can't appreciate it.

....again, following the Chem. Bros., not the best segway Bill has ever constructed I agree. But what an amazing song, huh?

Jack Johnson - Better Together (Sep 02, 2005 - 12:03) | jeremyleo wrote: A friend of mine says Jack always sounds like he's lying on the beach playing his guitar. Mellow and relaxed. His music brings me there.

Ryan Adams - Let it Ride (Sep 02, 2005 - 10:39) | Roverfish wrote:Wow, he's come so far since that "Summer of '69" tune.
I'm sure he's never heard that one. Likeable tune from a guy who continues to surprise.
"Summer of '69" was BRYAN Adams, he is not quite the same as RYAN, not nearly...I hear this confusion practically EVERY time I mention his music. Ryan is wayyyy better, (in my humble opinion of course!)

Patty Griffin - Mary (Jun 22, 2005 - 11:34) | steeler wrote: Phrasing and intonation, especially in beginning, reminds me of Springsteen. I know, I know, the voice itself is much better, but I'm just talking the phrasing and intonation. You know....she does cover a Springsteen song, "Stolen Car" it is an amazing version you should hear if you're a fan of both Patty and Bruce's music.

As is the new album; I have never heard a Patty Griffin song i didn't like. She moves listeners in so many differnt ways. Her song "Forgiveness" could change the world, if everyone heard it.

Coldplay - Til Kingdom Come (Jun 22, 2005 - 09:47) | jbtidwell wrote: I'm glad that they haven't turned the sound on their first two albums into a formula, and the the songs on this new album are good, but not nearly as unique and distictive... I'm kind of disapointed.
The observation is right on in my opinion. On this new album it appears that they have lost something, but are still an excellent band with a unique and a distinctive sound, something that does not happend often enough these days with well known bands.
