About the album, my first thought was ho-hum, but the more I listen the more and more I like it, especially the songs '300 M.P.H. Torrential Outpour Blues' and 'Effect and Cause'. Give the album some more spins and see if your view doesn't change.
Nah.

The White Stripes - You Don't Know What Love Is (Jul 26, 2007 - 11:56) | I simply don't understand the public interest in this band. All of their songs sound the same to me, which use the same, basic drum beat and crashing cymbal.
Boring.
|
Old 97s - Barrier Reef (Jul 10, 2007 - 05:48) | Fantastic band and an incredible live act. Just saw them at Milwaukee's Summerfest. So much energy!
By the way, the Empty Bottle mentioned in the first line of this song is a bar in Chicago. Old 97s started out on the Bloodshot Records label, based in Chicago.
OK, enough blabber.

Funny, the beginning made me think of Van Morrison's "Into the Mystic."

Great "new" band? Cracker has been around since 1992, my friend. You got the "great" part right, though.

The Kinks - Victoria (Jun 05, 2007 - 11:09) | Cracker does a good version of this on the Ray Davies/Kinks tribute album.

Oh yeah, that guitar in the background is dead on.
|
Cracker - Sidi Ifni (May 15, 2007 - 06:29) | OK, time to pull out some Cracker that hasn't been played in eons. As much as I like this song, I wouldn't mind hearing some older stuff from the RP vault. How about "How Can I Live Without You?" C'mon, Bill!!!

I realize that. I was suggesting that David Lowery, lead singer and guitarist of Cracker and former leadman of Camper Van Beethoven, had come a long way. I should have been clearer in my comments I suppose. Thanks for keeping me honest.
No problem, man. Just keep feeling that Good Ol' CrackerSoul!

Cracker - Sidi Ifni (Apr 30, 2007 - 08:10) | slugore wrote: This song is great. Plain and simple. The guitar line is so emotionally driven and really evokes the longing for lost love that the song's protaganist has.
Cracker has delved into new territory, it's so much more than take the skinheads bowling!
FYI: "Take the Skinheads Bowling" is a Camper Van Beethoven song, not Cracker.

No, this album is a weak effort. So was their last album, Cracker Forever. They have definitely lost some of their power.
On the other hand, Camper Van Beethoven's last album, New Roman Times is very good. Definitely like David Lowery without Mr. John Hickman.
Totally disagree. This album is much, much stronger than Forever. Sure, it lacks some of the high energy and rambunctiousness of the first few albums, but that was also 15 years ago. Cracker has musically become more evolved and matured just a bit. There are some really good songs on here. And their live shows are still one of the best around. And quite frankly, David Lowery would have gone nowhere without Johnny Hickman. One of the most talented guitarists nobody has ever heard of. They compliment each other perfectly.

Ridiculous statement. Go see one of their live shows. I think you'll quickly change your mind.

The reason for the large amount is because they're GOOD! More Cracker the better.

80's New Wave????!!!!! You're kidding me, right? Not only is this not New Wave, but it came out in 1993. Last time I looked, that was in the 90's.
Please check your facts before you make such an absurd comment.

I think it is a shame that Nirvana was the number one grunge band of the early 90's. There were many times many more talented musicians and bands that were overshadowed by Kurt Kobain and company.
If you're gonna knock the band, the least you can do is get the singer's last name spelled correctly. It's Cobain.

This song fit in well with the rest of the Kerosene Hat album, justifying the cover (as if they need justification), but there are many better songs on the album.
I enjoyed seeing The Dead live, but for me most of their studio stuff was pretty mediocre.
I agree 100%!

Better Than Ezra - One More Murder (Dec 21, 2006 - 08:59) | Just saw them last weekend here in Chicago at HOB. Fantastic show, as always. A great band that has a lot of fun on stage.
|
David Bowie - The Man Who Sold The World (Dec 07, 2006 - 10:01) | Sorry, but Nirvana's unplugged cover of this is SO much better. Some say Cobain's singing and guitar work are weak compared to this, but I say that's what makes it so good. More raw emotion and rough around the edges.
|
Cracker - Sidi Ifni (Dec 07, 2006 - 09:45) | Excellent! Saw them play this in Chicago this past September and it was truly mesmorizing.

Zwan - Riverview (Nov 01, 2006 - 14:14) | snitramc wrote: I actually visited Riverview several times, which shows y'all how olde I am. Yep, it's a strip mall now, cop shop, couple of big box groceries, and a muddy river backing it up. But Riverview was fun. It had a cool 'coaster called The Bobs. For a kid, it scared the hell out of me, but I still rode it. I really don't see how this somewhat interesting song translates to a bunch of folks running around with a $1.75 ticket in their hand riding rides and eating crap food all day. However, Roscoe Village, across the street, IS trendy. It was way blue collar twenty years ago, when we movd into the 'hood, but now its pretty yup. I guess any big star that mentions their hometown gets a lot of cheer. Of course, Billy isn't from Chicago. He's from some 'burb out there called Glendale or something. By the time he moved to Wicker Park, Riverview was a memory.
It's actually Glendale Heights, a western suburb of Chicago.

Donnie Iris - Ah! Leah! (Oct 20, 2006 - 09:53) | Friggin' sweet!!!!!
This brings back wonderful memories of grade school in the late '70's/early 80's and hearing this song constantly played on WLS AM890 in Chicago.
Awesome!

Cracker - Better Times Are Coming Our Way (Sep 14, 2006 - 08:45) | Rtschnell wrote: The worst song on the album? (Not IMO, I uploaded this one :-)) It's sometimes a challenge to predict which songs RP will accept, so I usualy choose cuts that I think have a greater chance than the more creative versions that I think many RP listeners would appreciate. I already tried uploading the two songs I think are the best on the CD ("Maggie" and "Gimme One More Chance", a truly kick-ass rocker that I wish RP had accepted) and both were declined very quickly (not sure why).
Greenland is less about the bar-room pleasing rockers of their past, and more about an introspective look at aging and better times before, so it may not have as immediate appeal as Kerosene Hat say, but I think it's rewarding after repeated listens. I saw them at the Fillmore last week in S.F., and their live show is still one of the best around, although David was a little more reserved than other shows in the past (although he still spits out his lyrics in a visible spray, and Johnny Hickman's guitar work is such a joy to watch live...)
Sorry, listened to it again and just don't care for it. In fact, it makes me sleepy.

I hope you can dig a little deeper and find something more airworthy.
I agree. This is probably the worst song on the album. Give "Gimme One More Chance" a listen. Damn good song, especially Hickman's guitar solo. I wish RP would upload this.
I've been a HUGE Cracker fan since their first album came out in 1992, and have seen them at least 10-12 times anytime they come through Chicago. Though I do like the new album, I really miss the intensity and energy of some of their earlier work. They've kind of mellowed out as they've aged. However, they are still a fantastic live act, and always a put on a great show.

Rush - The Enemy Within (Aug 04, 2006 - 08:05) | Holy Crow! The first time I hear Rush on here and it's one of my favorite songs from them. Sweeeeeeet!!!!!!
|
Cracker - Something You Ain't Got (Jul 14, 2006 - 09:37) | This song, and the new album itself, really grows on you with repeated listens, especially with headphones on. Bill, you've got to also add "Gimme One More Chance."
God Bless Cracker. One of the last great true American rock and roll bands. Totally underappreciated.
|
Spin Doctors - Little Miss Can't Be Wrong (May 16, 2006 - 11:40) | Saw Cracker open for these guys in '94. Should have been the other way around. Needless to say, we left about two songs into their set. Brutal.
|
Marc Broussard - Home (Dec 21, 2005 - 08:14) | Great song. His performance of this on the Letterman show was fantastic. By the way, the guitarist on this is named Gibb Droll. Check his stuff out sometime. It is fantastic.

Willie Nelson - Blue Skies (Nov 22, 2005 - 13:22) | ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
YAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Cracker - Shine (Nov 17, 2005 - 14:27) | Zat sure sounds like Sheryl Crow in there, but AMG doesn't say so. Anybody have inside information?
Her name is Brandy Wood. She was the bass player on this album. No longer with the band.
|
R.E.M. - Find The River (Nov 17, 2005 - 09:43) | God, this song is just so gorgeous. I love the Mike Mills background vocals in this.
|
Beck - Hell Yes (Sep 15, 2005 - 12:00) | Is that the Chicken Dance song I hear?
|
Cracker - The Good Life (Sep 05, 2005 - 09:12) | Great song from an otherwise blah album from one of my favorite bands.
|
Old 97s - Won't Be Home (Jun 23, 2005 - 08:56) | Yeah, Too Far to Care REALLY starts with a bang. You'll love it!
These guys are incredible live. I don't know how the drummer continues to play without his arms falling off. So much energy.
|
U2 - The Fly (May 05, 2005 - 19:52) | One of my favorite songs from the early 90's. Why, I can't explain. That opening riff just gets me every time.
|
Cracker - Low (Mar 29, 2005 - 13:36) | Drover:
Cracker blows away CVB.
|
Donnie Iris - Ah! Leah! (Feb 08, 2005 - 12:40) | This takes me back to 6th grade and cranking WLS AM890 in Chicago on my little radio. Excellent!
|
Subdudes - Late At Night (Feb 02, 2005 - 07:49) | Going to see them in Chicago on March 18 at the House of Blues. Can't wait!
|
Rolling Stones - Dead Flowers (Jan 10, 2005 - 14:39) | Don't understand all the negative comments for this. I think it's just the guys having a little fun putting a twist on one of their songs in front of a live audience. What's wrong with that? Jeez, lighten up.
|
Patty Griffin - Blue Sky (Sep 18, 2004 - 09:33) | For a minute there, I thought that was The Edge breaking into some Actung Baby-esqe riffs at the beginning.
|
Cracker - The Good Life (Jul 13, 2004 - 19:30) | To the naysayers in this thread: If you haven't seen David and the boys in person, you are out of line. I defy you to go to a Cracker show and not end up a convert. Happy times.
Pound for pound, the coolest band in the land, IMO.
I couldn't agree more. One of the best American bands out there today. Do yourself a favor and get some Crackersoul today!
|
Ima Robot - Alive (Jun 24, 2004 - 12:38) | That's Geddy Lee, not Getty.
I thought this was Spacehog.
|
Cracker - Low (Feb 09, 2004 - 12:23) | Cracker ROCKS, and is one of the best live bands you'll ever see.
|
Coldplay - God Put A Smile Upon Your Face (Jan 06, 2004 - 19:59) | Good, God, I love this friggin' song!!!!! And so do my two kids. Nothing funnier than seeing a 5 and a 2 year old jumping up and down to Coldplay. I just bought the album yesterday based on the 4 or 5 songs I've heard on RP over the last few months. Thank you, RP!!!! That's why I listen.
|
Leftover Salmon & Cracker - Eurotrash Girl (Aug 07, 2003 - 13:25) | dignan2, you have a real problem with Cracker, eh? I see nothing but negative comments from you regarding all the Cracker tunes RP plays.
I say, more Cracker. One of the more talented American bands still around.
|
Rush - Subdivisions (Sep 04, 2002 - 14:22) | Holy crow! I never thought I'd hear Rush on RP. Thank you. Fantastic selection from one of my favorite bands.
|
Cracker - Shine (May 13, 2002 - 08:54) | Not one of their finer songs. Rather boring. There are better selections from this album.
|
Cyndi Lauper - She Bop (Apr 11, 2002 - 13:09) | Please tell me I'm only dreaming and that you're not really playing this.
BLAAAAHHHHHGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!
|
Cracker - Trials & Tribulations (Jan 30, 2002 - 10:12) | Great song, sung by the underrated Johnny Hickman. I would also suggest "Wedding Day" from the same album, also sung by Mr. Hickman. Very funny lyrics.
This is a great band, especially live!
