So, do you realize that if Jesus had said; "As my Father took a rib from Adam to create Eve and give her everlasting life in Eden, I give you this rib as a symbol of my body that you might have everlasting live in Heaven." And then if he'd said; "Take this golden elixir as a symbol of the gilded life you will receive as a reward in Heaven." We'd all be having BBQ Ribs and Beer in church... It'd be more like a tailgate party. Attendance would be way up!
Just thought.

That Satan is a tricky guy.

'Beyond the Sea' played during the ending credits. lophrequa, if you get the opportunity, I recommend renting "Finding Nemo." It's a delightful movie about a little orange clown-fish who gets caught by humans and put in an aquarium. His father goes looking for him and has a series of incredible adventures, meets various other sea creatures, and learns a lesson or two about himself along the way. It's one of my favorite "feel-good" movies, and the Pixar people are insanely talented and funny. My favorite part of the closing credits is all the activity going on as a backdrop. Little jellyfish squirting across the screen, etc. And "Beyond the Sea" is the song playing during the credits, as AvoidingWork said. (Hey, AvoidingWork - it's now FRIDAY. The druming that sounds like a Bodhran may be the cow bones CCD use (I haven't seen them play). It too has a lot of fiddle in it, although, in Norwegian folk music, they often use the Hardanger fiddle, which has extra strings underneath the usual ones. Makes for an interesting sound. The rhythm and style is very similar too. Played by an African-American band from Carolina. Got to like that! So I'm curious what makes this sound like Celtic or Norwegian. To me, the sharps and flats and very floating rhythm make it sound very early Afro-American. If if is the sound of the fiddle then I would guess all folk music has it's basis in Italian folk music since that is where the violin is credited to being refined from other string/bow instruments having come from inner Asia. (According to Wiki.)
The drumming is one of the members of the group stomping his feet and clapping while the other is playing a set of bones. There are some great you tube vids of these guys.

While editing your post first insert the smillie; then click on the where your smillie should be. Edit the image properties by clicking on the tree in the icon row next to the horse shoe, or is that an omega symbol? Change the 'http://www.radioparadise.coms' to 'scripts' and hit tab. It's worked for me so far.
hope it works for you as well.
Edit, Edit:
Another way is to click the HTML button way on the right when editing your comment. Find the image you want and then again change the 'http://www.radioparadise.coms' to 'scripts'
If it disappears completely you will need to do a bit more editing. Find the img tag. It looks like this: <img style="border: 0px initial initial;" title="{#Stop}" src="scripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/img/icon_stop.gif" alt="{#Stop}" width="0" height="0" /> Take out the style attribut and put in border="0" and take out the height and width. Like this <img border="0" title="{#Stop}" src="scripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/img/icon_stop.gif" alt="{#Stop}" width="0" height="0" /> And again it's worked so far for me. Good luck.

The best English-as-a-second-language country is The Netherlands I think. Not many travel or career options if your native language is Dutch, now is there? English is a matter of survival or a ticket out of poverty for many people in the world. Considering the global economy, the single greatest skill any of us native speakers possess is our English. It is extremely difficult to become really fluent in a second language without immigrating anyway. I have travelled, lived abroad, and learned other languages pretty well. If I speak in the foreign language to someone, I am always greeted with English in reply, provided my interlocutor knows it even a little. If I start in English, the response is invariably in the foreign tongue and too fast to understand. BTW, how do you square radical socialism with your scruples for "proper" English? Isn't there a contradiction there? Having traveled on Uncle Sam's ticket I learned enough of the host county's language to get around. Find the closest bar, get directions to the nearest train station, would you like to dance, how much something costs, please help me out of the gutter and put me on a park bench. But as you said, when I started in their native tongue I was greeted with English. It made it hard to learn their language because they were always eager to learn English. On the other hand while shopping in Rothenberg ob der Tauber, I gave a nice American girl directions on where the town square was and she complimented me on my English.

I just kept my mouth shut for a minute or so and then said, "I don't know, maybe on the way back we can stop in and see what they are selling." Treat it like alcohol: legalize it (via licensing) tax the hell out of it with sin taxes if you must, but make provision for people like me to grow my own legally and make it exempt from excise tax if for my own consumption and for gifting friends; exactly the way I can now make my own beer & wine for personal consumption & for gifting friends (but not for sale, sorry). Read more: http://www.cbc.ca/canada/british-columbia/story/2010/04/20/bc-4-20-smoke-ins.html When a police officer can do a test to see how stoned you are, sort of like a blood alcohol test, and determine if you are too stoned to drive, (1 toke, 2 tokes?) legalizing marijuana will gain more traction. But until then there is no way to allow it.
I sure don't want my bus driver drinking, or toking up while on duty. Sure it happens now, but there are severe consequences. How do you tell if the airline pilot that just crashed was stoned or had smoked three days ago while off duty?
Legalize it and tax it and get government revenue. Legalize it and kill a large portion of the illegal drug trade. But the first time a stoned driver runs over a kid and is not sent to jail for being stoned and it was just a mistake because they were allowed to be stoned and drive it will be prohibited again.
And how about second hand smoke? I had to really be careful when I was in the service and I visited Amsterdam. Sure enough, when I got back from my vacation I was piss tested.
If I sit in a bar now I can have my drink and nobody else's. I get to breath the smoke from the cigarette smokers and they get to enjoy my cigar smoke (It's funny how cigar smoke will piss off cigarette smokers). But when I leave, I know exactly how many drinks I had and make the choice of how I am getting home. If marijuana is legalized, the designated driver will have to wear a gas mask while partying with friends.
And yes, I would like a toke or two every now and then to help wash away the day.

There's no reasons, no excuses, she just has to do it, thus the downtempo arrangement and minor key. But she hopes the relationship will continue into her 50s, 60s, and 70s, even if it means this sort of compromise for whatever reason. Really! Anal sex! Let me look though those lyrics...
There's a note underneath your front door that I wrote twenty years ago Yellow paper and a faded picture And a secret in an envelopeThere's no reasons No excuses There's no secondhand alibis Just some black ink on some blue lines and a shadow you won't recognize Oooh Oooh Oooh Oooh In the meantime I'll be waiting for twenty years and twenty more I'll be praying for redemption and your note underneath my door And your note underneath my door Oh now I see it. Back to the point tho- this is still a message board about music we enjoy through Radio Paradise.
Random thoughts of no importance:
I love how the subjects on the message board on Radio Paradise change from song to song to the point it's addicting. They're worse than Pistachios. The random subjects changing every few minutes; I have learned more about artists and songs from well educated RPer' than anywhere else. Little tidbits of history that don't really change anything but like a little nugget of gold are fun to find. For instance, The Beatles, Sexy Sadie, being about the Maharishi. Hmm, never knew.
As for the positive or negative comments on music, they are nice to read in a "I'm with you." kind of way. But truly, for me, liking music is so subjective that I don't understand the anger and vitriol expressed to each other on this board.
I have many friends who don't like the same music as myself and I know some people with whom I avoid even though they like the same music I like. As I write this it occurs to me how the internet causes us to cast such quick judgements on another individual based on one aspect of who they are.
Anyway, time to get back to work.

He had a state of the art system for 1969. Two tape decks, turn table, AM/FM/SW radio, three channel pre-amps, and a couple of other electronic items I forget the names of. All tubes and It as all housed in a cabinet 6 ft high, 5 ft wide and 2 ft deep. The speakers were in cabinets 4 ft high by 2 ft. My Mom called it "The Monster". I used to get in the cabinet and flip switches and turn dials and pretend I was a mad scientist working on controlling the world. He had one chair placed in optimal position to get the stereo effect. Do you remember that commercial with the guy sitting in front of the big speakers JBL I think, and the glass of wine starts to slide off the little table. It was a little like that. Sometimes on Saturday morning, Dad would put on the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace and crank up the volume until things started rattling off the shelves. I can still hear the horses hove's clatter against the cobble stones as the moved from left to right and the Sargent Major's voice yelling out the commands. Then the royal band would kick in. Do you not like the song because of the 'tug at the heartstrings" or that Iz put together two songs that contradict each other? If he had chosen say, "Get Happy" and "Beautiful World" would that have made a difference? I going to step out on a limb here and make a huge assumption. Seeing a man like Iz and thinking of the trials and tribulations that come with being that large while living in a place like Hawaii must have been a lot like his song.

Cult With No Name - Golden Brown (Jul 20, 2010 - 08:32) | peter_james_bond wrote: I disagree, I find this version adds some weight to the original. Don't get me wrong, I like the original but the fast tempo of that version gives it a light and, almost, comical feel.
I like how they slowed this down. I too was confused by the light up beat tempo of the original. I always felt it was about a girl and not drug abuse. But that said I don't think this singer put the emotion needed to actually lament his drug use.
Edit:
So I did the Wiki thing... There has been much controversy surrounding the lyrics. In his 2001 book The Stranglers Song By Song, Hugh Cornwell clearly states "'Golden Brown' works on two levels. It's about heroin and also about a girl". Essentially the lyrics describe how "both provided me with pleasurable times".
I'm feeling good that I got the point about the girl. I really have a hard time with understanding poetry and lyrics unless they are really blatant.
As I listened to this, I kept thinking of "Mad World" where the original fast beat song is great. While the slower piano only version conveys the emotion and loneliness much more effectively. Based on that I wanted to give this song more of a chance. But after reading what Hugh had to say, I like the original more.

The unique and disgusting smell is something I'll never forget.

Many Native American tribes in the southwest have the same obesity problem. It's not so much the food that contributed to the problem but the consistent supply. As I've heard it, many humans that lived in a place where food was not in constant supply developed a feast and famine diet. Their bodies adjusted to this by absorbing food in the feast times by building up fat reserves to then consume in the times of famine. With the modern day availability of food their bodies just continue to hold fat for use later that is not needed.
That being said there are a lot of physically fit Native Americans who don't suffer from an obesity problem. So I don't know.
I think genetically the cards can be stacked either for or against you. Being blessed to come from a family with a slender build, I have great respect for the people who have overcome obesity. It's not something that I want to see if my will is strong enough to conquer.

Bering Strait - Porushka-Paranya (Nov 19, 2009 - 16:12) | Based on the comments I'm not sure how many people want to see this but here it is anyway. Taken from http://www.beringstraitfans.com/lyrics/porushkaparanya.html
TRANSLATION AND HISTORY: Polushka-ParanyaPolushka-Paranya is a very old Russian love song, probably dating to the early 18th century, possibly around the time of Tsar Peter the Great. There are a number of old expressions in this song no longer used commonly anywhere in Russia, much as a lot of words have also disappeared in the English language. It can be difficult for an American translating this song to understand it initially, as the expression of love is a bit different from what would be used in English today. Many of the word endings are signs of affection which are difficult to translate literally into English. The song is about a woman named Polushka-Paranya (I am told this is the original name, and the transliteration version in the song uses Porushka-Paranya). She is asked why she loves a man named Ivana. She replies, in essence: "I love my Ivana because of his thick curly hair and beard covering his entire head and face. He is such a brave, good man. And when he walks around the house in his long boots I can hear him click his heels (i.e. implied in joy) and (implied) I love to hear that sound as he taps his feet. Then, this clever man says to me "Oh can't you see that you have dried me up (i.e., my love for you is so intense, it is all I have left); and even if the cold weather and wintery winds were to pass, my heart would still remain frozen (i.e. captured) by you. That is why I love Ivana. I love him for his soft, curly head and beard and his wise and wonderful way of telling me he loves me. That is why I love Ivana." Interpreters tell me in essence it is about a couple in a little village in Russia. She is telling about the little things she likes as they pass the cold harsh winters together in their cottage and Ivana putters about the house. Long hair and big beards were common in Russia, not just as a protection from the cold, but part of Orthodox Catholic religious teachings. Peter the Great, thinking the huge beards were archaic and didn't represent Russia well in the west, ordered beards and mustaches shaved and then taxed if anything were left. He personally sheared many of his own staff, often painfully. The repeated reference to his bushy beard and air is thus typical of what was once considered very attractive in 18th Century Russia. I suspect much of the rapid pace of the song and short, choppy words at the start of sentences are some very impressive poetry mimicking the clicking of Ivana's heals as he walks and dances around the house. In fact, I suspect few people can resist tapping their feet in joy at this song, just as Ivana did for his love for his wife. JonnyQ's note - This song was used for the background of a scene from an episode of "Alias."

Sufficiently strong resonances of the vocal tract can strongly influence the timbre of the instrument. At some frequencies, whose values depend on the position of the player's tongue, resonances of the vocal tract inhibit the oscillatory flow of air into the instrument. These variations during the inhalation and exhalation phases of circular breathing, give the instrument its readily recognizable sound. Oh, that's why I couldn't play the didgeridoo when I was In Australia. I didn't get the "oscillatory flow" correct and my circular breathing was all out of whack. I'll just stick with the guitar. I just wish I could play one, and so do my friends.

Just wondering.
I like the eloquence that some of the listeners have when they express their likes or dislikes. The originality of the negative comment tied to the song can be quite funny sometimes. While I don't agree with them, I would much rather see a comment by PhysicsGenius or Excelsior over ManBirdExperiment any day. Jeez, I get tired of seeing that picture.
P.S. I'm guessing that the tattoo on Annie's forehead is so when she passes people on the street they'll know who she is because if it was for her to remember who she was when she looked in the mirror it's backward.

Tough to tell. You can see the indentation is showing up around her right foot. Also the seam for the hood is slightly dipped compared to the fender. (I hope everything popped back up ok.) I like the gravel reflection in the bumper and speaking of which I don't see the sword reflection on the bumper. Maybe it's beyond the curve of the hood for the reflection to pick it up. Does anybody know what state that license plate that belongs to?

Outback - On The Streets (Apr 28, 2006 - 11:53) | I travelled to Sydney and had the great pleasure of listening to guys play the didgeridoo street side. Then you get to go over to "The Rocks" buy your own and just really bugger it up. Some will give imprompto lessons. Extremely talented and fun.

For sure... I like it!

Song's like this is why I had to get one of those plastic keyboard covers. At least my back is to the cube wall so they can't see the vacant stare. Not that it's any different than usual, it's just accompanied with the drool.

The Church - Lost (Jan 27, 2006 - 17:47) | Part of it reminds me Pink Floyd "Learing to Fly". Then I'm dissapointed because it's not and I take my head phones off. What's the next song...

From the gist of most of the comments it doesn't look like many people stick around long enough to hear it at the end of the song. It was going to drive me crazy trying to place that rift. Thanks!

They definately kepp it kind of low key. I just bnought this CD, and that seems to be a theme throughout. Remember though that the CD is a studio redording, and that may be why it lacks the raw energy that you may expect from a live performance. great music anyway, in my opinion.
I think with any live show the electricity of the crowd brings out a certain quality that can not be recreated while just listening to the song.
That said, the quality of music that can be produced on a sound stage is so much more crisp and clear that I enjoy more songs from sound stage than a live performance.
That said, I saw the Tibetan Buddhist Monks from Drepung perform at Grady Gammage in Phoenix. During one of the prayer songs you can literally see the energy in the room grow. I was a tingle the whole song. There is no way a CD recording of that song could reproduce the effect of that song.
Kodo is another group where the vibrations from the drums just have to be felt in person.
As for BMG, I like it.

Beck - Beautiful Way (Dec 13, 2005 - 14:44) | Arrrgh.... What is that other song that has those drums in it. It's driving me crazy...
