The Cars - Good Times Roll (Feb 21, 2010 - 21:14) | Our high school wanted "Won't Get Fooled Again" by the Who as our class song. This was overruled, so we decided on Let the Good Times Roll. At the time it seemed like a poor second, but hearing this again tonight makes me realize what a cool song this is.

Did I dream you dreamed about me? Were you hare when I was fox? Now my foolish boat is leaning Broken lovelorn on your rocks, For you sing, touch me not, touch me not, come back tomorrow: O my heart, o my heart shies from the sorrow
I am puzzled as the newborn child I am troubled at the tide: Should I stand amid the breakers? Should I lie with death my bride? Hear me sing, swim to me, swim to me, let me enfold you: Here I am, here I am, waiting to hold you

Imagine how much better Abbey Road would've been if Paul hadn't elbowed his way into putting in crap songs like Maxwell's Silver Hammer and fucking Octopus's Garden and let George put more stuff in. The story goes that Paul was threatened by While My Guitar Gently Weeps during the White Album sessions, worried that George had surpassed him as a songwriter. Then when George presented Something and Here Comes the Sun for Abbey Road, Paul realized they were by far the best songs on the album and so jealously blocked him from putting My Sweet Lord and The Art of Dying in as well. Isn't it a pity, indeed...

If I buy a CD from Amazon for $12.99 or download it from iTunes for $9.99, the artist MIGHT get 2 bucks of that (probably less) so if I pay the artist $3 directly, they have already made more off of me than had I purchased the music in the "traditional" way.
This is a good discussion everyone, thanks. But Kevin, I don't understand your logic. If there is no record company providing distribution (even digital has distribution and promotion costs) and that sort of infrastructure, then that means Radiohead is having to pay for it, yes? So they really aren't making $3. It's $3 minus overhead. So really, like, 5 cents.

Because you don't get the physical CD, case and booklet that you'd get if you pruchased a CD? There's also the fact that your money (in this case) is going straight to the artists and the record company overhead is gone.
With the record company overhead being gone, the funding for touring, etc is not there. Radiohead has to come up with this funding themselves. I am sure they are planning to pay for it at least partially out of SALES? They also have to pay for servers, file storage, websites, etc...
I just don't understand why we don't want to pay performers and other artists for the pleasure they bring us.

Radiohead - House Of Cards (Oct 12, 2007 - 06:51) | jenakle wrote: It was your choice for payment
I'm sure there are people out there that paid 1 penny, but I paid about 5 bux for it.
1, I appreciate what they're doing
2, its money to the band, not to record label
3, I'd have to pay min. 10 bux on amazon/iTunes for it
therefore, 5 bux is a good deal to me, supporting my music but at a discount
I hope more bands do this...I'm much more likely to buy more music
I don't understand why you feel the need to discount what you paid by 50% from what you would have paid on iTunes. Think about it, that means you just ripped off the talented band Radiohead by 50%. I will now pay them $20 to make up for your cheapness.
I get frustrated with this idea that just because it is digital, or delivered through alternative distribution it should be cheaper or free. There are just as many costs to maintain digital systems and distribution as there are in traditional media. And the artist put 100% effort into the music - why should you pay less? If you appreciate what they are doing, why not pay them for it?
The record industry is basically built on an indentured servant system. The artist is fronted money by the record company for recording, touring, videos, packaging, promotion, tours, overhead - then has to pay back the record company first out of any resulting revenue. It's a business. I am not sure how this is saving Radiohead any money, since they still have to come up with the bucks for the above mentioned costs.
Have a nice day, and by the way, we have decided to cut your wages by 50%, starting today. 'Cause that's just what we feel like paying you.

Eva Cassidy - Fields of Gold (Mar 19, 2007 - 18:23) | Bruce Lundvall still shakes his head over Eva Cassidy. Lundvall heads Blue Note Records, a label with a string of distinctive jazz singers. None made a first impression like this unknown singer from Bowie.
"Eva Cassidy had the most extraordinary and singular voice I had heard in a very, very long time," he says. "It was distinctive not only because of its power but because of its timbre when she sang quietly. It was so very mysterious -- it would just freeze me.
"The first time I ever heard her was in my office. She sang an a cappella `Amazing Grace' and I was just nailed to the wall. I made a very bad mistake. I should have signed her. . . . She was a kid. Who knew?"
On Nov. 2, 1996, Eva Cassidy died at the age of 33 following a three-month battle with bone cancer. She was, for sure, a diamond, no longer in the rough but not yet in the proper setting that would showcase a voice so pure, so strong, so passionate that it should have found a home just about anywhere.
Cassidy didn't have any concept of target audiences or musical distinctions. She could sing anything -- folk, blues, pop, jazz, R&B, gospel -- and make it sound like it was the only music that mattered.

Mano Negra - Sidi H' Bibi (Jan 17, 2007 - 16:44) | Whatever the risk, Chao wasn't holding his tongue on this tour. At one point he unfurled a red Zapatista flag in support of Mexican rebels in the state of Chiapas. At another, he delivered a sharp rebuke of "politicians that say lies, lies and more lies."
"They say we must fight violence with violence," he continued in heavily accented English. "That's not true. We must fight violence with education."

Do you know the ghost community?
Sound the horn, address the city
(Who will save it? Dedicate it?
Who will praise it? Commemorate it for you?)
We are awakened with the ax
Night of the Living Dead at last
They have begun to shake the dirt
Wiping their shoulders from the earth
I know, I know the nations past
I know, I know they rust at last
They tremble with the nervous thought
Of having been, at last, forgot

Speaking their names, they shake the flag
Wking the earth, it lifts and lags
We see a thousand rooms to rest
Helping us taste the bite of death
I know, I know my time has passed
I'm not so young, I'm not so fast
I tremble with the nervous thought
Of having been, at last, forgot

I agree. Americans seem to struggle sometimes to separate myth and reality. I cant see what the fuss is about either. A four. Nice enough, but unremarkable in my opinion.

Johnny Cash - I Walk The Line (Mar 02, 2006 - 16:11) | Clobyn, It is hard to explain. His voice is part of our collective psyche - it's kinda visceral and internal. No words can describe how great Johnny Cash is.
This is one of those songs that people will just start singing as a crowd when they hear it. You probably have something similar in the NL?

Well, I listen to the music, not to the status of the artist.
I really don't understand what *everyone* seems to be raving about.
