This song, for example, is derivative as hell. The lyrics are made up from phrases from other songs: feet don't fail me now, take a walk on the wild side, let me kiss you in the pouring rain, I can see but once I was blind. And, I'm pretty sure the melody of the chorus is straight from something by A Fine Frenzy.

I have a sensitive ear to this since I've done a bit of music production myself in the studio.
I'm not talking about T-Pain kind of auto-tune use, but the subtle pitch perfect use of it to keep a voice in tune. If that's so, a big two thumbs down, but either way, I won't vote a rating on this song.
Yep. I hear it too. For me, it's not so much the extra sounds you hear, as there are places where any unaltered voice would slide between the notes a bit, and he doesn't. There are tones I expect to hear that are missing because they've been autotuned out.

Grant Lee Buffalo - Dixie Drug Store (Jun 28, 2009 - 18:00) | Interesting that this is GLB. He usually does a slidey thing with his voice that I don't like much, but this is great. I love the background vocals. They remind me of another song, but I can't put my finger on which song it is.

Michael Jackson - Beat It (Jun 25, 2009 - 18:47) | This!! This is what I want to remember Michael for.
Edited to add: I remember listening to this at top volume (in my crappy Mazda RX3, remember those?) in the summer when I was 19. That means he was only 22 or 23 when this came out.
|
Sheryl Crow - Redemption Day (Jun 17, 2009 - 21:16) | There was a brief period in my life when I had a decent cd player in my car, but I hadn't yet discovered used cd's . (Also, I was broke.) I would buy a cd after very careful deliberation and then play.it.to.death. Now, when I hear something from one of those 6 or 7 cds, I'm instantly transported back to that time, with all the moods and hassles I was dealing with flooding back.
RP has played songs from three of those tonight: Odelay, The Colour and the Shape, and this. I was listening to this very song when I made a major decision in my life, one that's affected nearly everything since. (It was a good decision.) I wouldn't take back the late 90's for anything, but I would never want to live through them again!
|
Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks (Jun 14, 2009 - 18:50) | This sounds like a weird cross between Peter, Bjorn and John, and Royksopp.
|
The Who - Sunrise (Jun 10, 2009 - 10:20) | I thought this was John Frusciante. Also, it sounds like it was recorded in a tile bathroom.
|
Josh Ritter - Harrisburg (Jun 05, 2009 - 12:10) | I was admiring this until this Josh started singing Papa Was A Rolling Stone. Where's my WTF smiley? <— That'll have to do.
|
Steven Wilson - Harmony Korine (Jun 05, 2009 - 11:20) | Steven Wilson uses interesting chord progressions in this, even more than usual. They're refreshingly unpredictable.
|
Tori Amos - Welcome To England (May 30, 2009 - 14:43) | I just figured out what bothers me about this song. It's that when she sings " 'welcome to england ' he said.... 'you;ve got to bring you're own sun, sweet girl...' " she pronounces it like someone from the southern US is saying it: "brang your own sun, sweet gurl." I mean, I've heard her sing with an almost British accent; why doesn't she do that here when the words are supposed to be coming from a British guy? Her pronunciation makes the song sound kind of cheesy, I think.

I thought of the Flaming Lips, too. Also, the production isn't as retroesque as other recent Dangermouse productions. It's nice to see he's not copying himself.

Cracker - Darling One (May 23, 2009 - 15:00) | There are certain artists I know I'll hear once a day on RP for better or worse, and Cracker is one of them. It's definitely a better thing in Cracker's case!
|
Damon Albarn & Friends - Niger (May 17, 2009 - 11:32) | I laughed when I read the name of the artist. It's like, after Blur and the Gorillaz and The Good The Bad and The Queen he's run out of band names and he's reduced to using his own name. Or maybe he thought no one would recognize him in this work otherwise, because I never would have thought this was Damon Albarn. This is interesting.
|
The Be Good Tanyas - The Coo Coo Bird (May 16, 2009 - 22:40) | Somebody else made the comment once that the lead singer of the Tanyas sings like she's sitting on a washing machine, and I agree, but I like it.

I've heard people say that when they're depressed, it's as if a fog is between them and the rest of the world. Maybe Nick's fog was pink.
On the other hand, I once got so mad I really did see red, which was more like a pale pink, so maybe the pink moon is anger.
On the other other hand, depression is sometimes referred to as anger turned inward, so maybe it's depression after all.
On the other other other hand (what?), maybe I'm reading way to much into this.

Silversun Pickups - Catch And Release (May 02, 2009 - 10:57) | I was just listening to this song in the car. It's ALL SILVERSUN PICKUPS, ALL THE TIME! Yay!
Everybody who likes this song should consider buying this CD. It's excellent. Lots of fuzzy guitar, and two songs with really nice string arrangements (including this one).

Annie Lennox - Don't Let It Bring You Down (Nov 01, 2008 - 15:01) | I was at the grocery store today and heard not one, but two, country artists covering alt-rock tunes. Jimi Hendrix - Manic Depression (Aug 16, 2008 - 16:27) | This has as much stereo separation as an original Beatles tune. The stereo outputs on your receiver should be labeled L and R. You'll want to make sure you get the positive and negative correct on both ends, too, or your woofers will throw inward instead of outward. Otherwise, you'd be playing music for the little gnomes* that live in your speaker enclosures, instead of the people in your living room.
Personally, I don't think the L and R thing matters much unless you listen to classical music. In that case, it would sound like the orchestra seating arrangement was backward.

Greg Laswell - Sing, Theresa Says (Jun 13, 2008 - 20:56) | This ends up being a pretty cool song, but that fake dusty record pop stuff at the beginning is really annoying. No one's records ever sounded like that back in the day, seriously. That's just wrong.

Sixteen Horsepower - Hutterite Mile (May 31, 2008 - 19:28) | I'm wondering if there is any particular meaning to the band's name. It is two gay men, smiling on a motorcycle which is traveling away from a scantily clad bleached blond who is ubertan. The tag line? "Ditch the Bitch -- Make the Switch!!".
So funny. And Morrissey comes to mind (because he hates women, amongst all others)...
My teenage son was in the car with me when I was listening to the '80s station on Siruis, and he said, "I don't know, this stuff seems kind of gay..." and all I could say was "You're right! That was what was so cool about it."

Okay, I agree with you that conventional radio sucks worse than ever, but I-tunes (which I hate, but still...) is an alternative to the record store, not the radio. Remember those? With the snarky clerks who were going to go into the back room and make fun of you for buying a Tom Petty CD as soon as you left? And Sirius is actually pretty good. It's irrelevant that you have to pay for it. You have to pay for your radio somehow, whether it be with cash, by listening to commercials or by making donations, like with RP.

Neko might be pretty, but I had a nightmare last night that I lived in this room.

Pearl Jam - Black (Dec 14, 2006 - 15:18) | I always hated this song. I hate the way he talks about the woman as if she were a thing.
I'm sure it's just me. Feel free to hate on me, I don't care.

William Shatner - Common People (Dec 12, 2006 - 12:23) | physicsgenius wrote:
No, it stays ironic. And, ironically, it is also genuinely pretty good.
LMAO. Somehow I knew you, the Mr. 90%-of-everything-is-crap guy, would like this. And I agree with you!

A banana playing the piano! Yeah!!

Mark Knopfler - Coyote (Dec 04, 2006 - 12:24) | This song makes me want to get in my car and drive way too fast.
(pretend that's a car -->)

The Raconteurs - Intimate Secretary (Nov 30, 2006 - 13:48) | phreels wrote: Is this song supposed to mean something, besides that they've mastered the use of a rhyming dictionary? Please let me know if I'm missing something, here.
I take this song to mean that the narrator is overwhelmed by the absurdities of life, based on lines at the end of the verses like, "The other foot looks like it won't drop, the ringing in my ears won't stop."
Not too sure about the intimate secretary part, though.

Ray LaMontagne - Empty (Nov 29, 2006 - 11:52) | This song is so evokative. I can see the scenery and all the characters in this song with perfect clarity.

Dang, I was going to post about how we were singing this in the car on the way to my grandmother's house on Thanksgiving, but we weren't singing Camera Obscura, that's for sure!
|
Muddy Waters - Got My Mojo Workin' (Nov 16, 2006 - 13:59) | This is obscure, but didn't Mason Ruffner do this in the '80's? Hey, I wonder if RP has any Mason Ruffner....hmmmmm.
|
Lloyd Cole - Cutting Out (Nov 08, 2006 - 14:55) | Yuck. It's like someone told him that his music wasn't relevent anymore and he said "I'll show you!" but missed the point.
Too bad it's so clunky - I like his other work.
|
Fun Lovin' Criminals - Crazy Train (Oct 13, 2006 - 14:39) | I thought this was Mark Knopfler and couldn't figure out why the HELL he did a cover of this.
Oh, I crack me up sometimes.
|
Paul Simon - Peace Like A River (Oct 13, 2006 - 12:55) | It is just awesome to hear this on RP. I stole my parents copy of this when I was about 12 and wore it out. I still have it somewhere.
|
Vienna Teng - Passage (Oct 11, 2006 - 14:14) | In light of the current plane crash in NYC, this song is not cool. I'm sure I'll feel differently tomorrow, though.
|
A3 - Let the Caged Bird Sing (Oct 09, 2006 - 17:14) | cbonai wrote: What exactly is the 'body of a nun' like?
And what does it mean to have hands like a missionary?
(This song is pretty awesome.)
|
Interpol - Hands Away (Oct 05, 2006 - 15:13) | This is one of my favorites by Interpol. Sometimes RP sounds so much like my iPod, it's spooky.
|
Guster - The Captain (Sep 22, 2006 - 13:08) | Has anyone else noticed that every time Bill plays a Guster song, he announces it? I just think he likes saying "Guster."
Guster, guster, guster.

Steve Earle - Transcendental Blues (Sep 18, 2006 - 15:16) | ty wrote: I saw Steve Earle in a small theatre in Colorado just before the 2004 presidential election. While he was very fired-up, his singing was incoherent, and his internal rage made a mess of the show. He released his frustration with the current administration at his fans by repeatedly swearing at us, and calling us "fucking lazy" for not voting and not protesting.
I like Steve Earle's music. I am not a wealthy industrialist who has sold congress and the presidency and shipped Amercia's jobs to foreign countries.
I also share some of Steve's sadness and anger with the direction the US government has taken us, but I guess he didn't know that when he was yelling at me. I bet there were very few neo-conservatives in his audience, but he attacked us like he was performing at the Republican Convention.
And when he broke a string during "Jerusalem", I worried that the blood vessels in his lungs or brain were not up to the task, or that he might kill his guitar tuner.
Steve Earle could be a powerful voice if he would learn from the great revolutionary speakers that unified people rather than insulting them. It might also help if he would open his mouth when he sings.
Lighten up, man. I voted.
I saw him open for Los Lobos at a small place in 1990 (yeah, I'm old) and while it was an awesome show, he was one of the angriest people I've ever seen on stage. I don't remember what he was ranting about, but Bush's daddy was in office at the time, so pretty much the same thing as in 2004, probably. Time and jail haven't changed him much, it sounds like.
I'm glad to hear this, though. I've been thinking about this CD ever since Bill played Telephone Road this morning.

Live - All Over You (Sep 18, 2006 - 13:37) | splooge wrote: Yeah, that's why I downloaded Radio Paradise. So I could hear this song for the 100 billionth time. Hey, could you play a whole bunch of Metallica too? Thanks.
Exactly. Some songs just need to be retired from the radio, forever. I don't want to heat this any more, uh huh.
|
Dire Straits - Tunnel of Love (Sep 18, 2006 - 10:34) | It's my lunchtime, I'm starved, and I have to pee, yet here I sit at my desk trying to look busy so I can listen to the guitar solo at the end...
|
Violent Femmes - Blister in the Sun (Sep 14, 2006 - 10:47) | Back when the only radio available was commercial radio, I listened to a station that played this song constantly. I don't want to hear it any more!!
|
Hooverphonic - We All Float (Sep 11, 2006 - 08:24) | This is nice, but we need to hear something else from Hooverphonic for a change. Please?

Live - Lightning Crashes (Sep 01, 2006 - 09:24) | dorkmeister wrote: Placentas go: "splorch".
That's the grossest line in Rock 'n Roll. Say, if placenta rhymes with magenta, what rhymes with splorch?
|
Crowded House - Private Universe (Sep 01, 2006 - 07:32) | I woke up this morning with a different Crowded House song in my head, so I rushed to work so that I could listen to RP and hear some more.

Odyzzeuz wrote:
What do you mean by forced?
I don't know about mysteryplane, but I'm behind a huge firewall at work, and I can listen to RP because of its 20kbps Windows Media Player stream, or I can listen to Sirius radio because of the embedded player, or I can listen to my co-workers say inane things on the phone all day long and go slowly mad.

Tom Petty - Down South (Aug 10, 2006 - 15:18) | This has the same tune as a Bob Dylan song, only it's kinda lame. Tom, you can do better than this!!
|
Dire Straits - Skateaway (Aug 08, 2006 - 15:19) | I used to have this song in my head when I'd ride my bicycle to work about 10 years ago.
Nice to hear it again. This whole album is great, but I have to warm up the turntable if I want to listen. I think I might have to invest in the cd.
|
Ryan Adams - Wonderwall (Jul 16, 2006 - 12:46) | This is the only version of this song that I like.
Usually, the original is best, but Liam Gallagher's voice rubs me the wrong way. Paul Anka's take just made me want to barf. Somebody else covered this too, but I can't remember it, so it couldn't have been that great. But this is nice.
|
Creeper Lagoon - Naked Days (Jul 10, 2006 - 13:58) | Did he just sing "Dollar bills made of sadness..." ?
That's a cool line, but I'm afraid I heard it wrong. Maybe I should write a song with that line in it.
|
Patti Smith - Summer Cannibals (Jul 06, 2006 - 15:17) | I'd never heard this before. At the beginning I thought it was funny, but by the end: :puke:
Too much cannibal!
