Jack White - Love Interruption (Apr 23, 2012 - 08:19) | This is one of those times that I would swear Jack is the secret son of Robert Plant. Something about his voice and how he uses it.

Hem - Half Acre (Jan 12, 2011 - 12:22) | So glad I don't have television and have never seen the ad mentioned below: nothing to ruin this fabulous song for me!
|
William Shatner - Common People (Dec 14, 2010 - 08:46) | I just love this! One of the best covers ever, William Shatner really somehow uses what he's got, and what he doesn't, and the results are incredibly entertaining!
|
The Avett Brothers - I And Love And You (Nov 19, 2010 - 10:10) | I don't know why, but I don't like these guys. I admit it, I have no good reason. I just don't. Something about their music strikes me as contrived.

Me too. Love this one. Love this whole album, but especially this song.

Lucinda Williams - 2 Kool 2 Be 4-Gotten (May 18, 2009 - 09:51) | The_Enemy wrote: I'm not sure that's an insult. Wreck is an easy 10. Sure, it was overplayed in its day and it's sappy but it has a visceral truthiness to it that's hard to resist. 2 Kool isn't bad. I give it a 7. holborne wrote: Uh...do you know what "truthiness" is supposed to connote?
I think this person meant "truthfulness". Not everyone watches Jon Stewart.

Aimee Mann - Wise Up (May 05, 2009 - 07:44) | nigelr wrote: Whatever. I thought his best performance was in 'Born on the 4th of July'. Nice song!
Well, he was kind of an a-hole in that one too, until he got screwed himself (the character), and that's what it took to change him. Love Aimee Mann, love this song, loved the movie (the last movie with TC that I liked, hard for me to watch his movies now).

Me too. LOVE 'EM!

Ani Difranco - Little Plastic Castle (Jan 27, 2009 - 10:37) | Ag3nt0rang3 wrote: I love this song in particular because for me it sums up what I admire most about Ani DiFranco, specifically her refusal to let anyone dictate to her who she should be.
We all know the first part of the song is about two women putting up with the rude stares of the provincial townfolk, but how many people listen to the rest of the lyrics? The whole second half of the song is an attack on the Lesbian Feminist culture of the day that dictated how a woman was supposed to dress (baggy plaid), what makeup to wear (none), and argued incessantly on the correct spelling of "woman" (is it "womyn", or "wommin", or what?).
Ani knew then that if a group is "freeing" you from oppression only to tell you what to wear or how to behave, then they really aren't freeing you at all, they're just giving you a new set of chains.
She shows us what Feminism can be, and she's my hero.
Well said! I don't love Ani in general, but I like this song and its message.

The Dandy Warhols - Hells Bells (Oct 30, 2008 - 12:46) | First time I've heard this cover, and I like this one. Some unlikely covers actually work: I was also surprised that the Dolly Parton cover of "Shine" was pretty good.

ITA, except I prefer Patty: like Emmylou alot, but LOVE, LOVE Patty!

'In My Tribe' is my favorite 10K album, and maybe because it was my first intro to them. I'd love to hear 'Painted Desert' on RP, as it's one of my all-time fav songs!! I still have this on cassette somewhere, and it has the 'Peace Train' recording, which was later removed from the album, due to some trouble with publishing rights, I believe.
I always heard that Natalie had it removed because Cat Stevens converted to Islam. She apparently wasn't happy because of how she believes women are treated in Islam. Maybe this is a myth, though?

Cake - Guitar (Jul 17, 2008 - 19:34) | I love Cake! I don't what it is about these guys, you either love or hate them. You either get them or don't.

Then why do you listen to RP? If you don't like RP, and don't want to help support the station, why do you tune in?

Cowboy Junkies - Brand New World (Apr 13, 2008 - 15:15) | Only having heard this a few times, I already give it a 7. I have a feeling it's going to go up, this one is growing on me fast.
|
Orient Expressions - Istanbul 1:26 am (Apr 09, 2008 - 19:23) | I was dozing off, and the squeaky toys in the background of Bill's set-break at the end of this woke me up! I couldn't figure out what noise had woke me up, until the toys squeaked again!
edited for spelling error, I'll blame it on lack of sleep!

I feel exactly the same way.
I first heard this song close to the time my 17 year old brother was killed in a freak car accident. He was much younger than me (from my father's third marriage) and I was just starting to get to know him a little better. Though it's a different relationship in this song, it still gets me every time.

Cake - Mexico (Mar 21, 2008 - 08:54) | Love Cake. Especially love this song.
|
The New Pornographers - Adventures In Solitude (Feb 01, 2008 - 16:40) | This song has really grown on me. I just love it, I love the back and forth play and harmonizing between the female and male vocals. It really gets under your skin, in a good way. It hits an emotional chord in me.
|
Leon Russell - Stranger in a Strange Land (Dec 19, 2007 - 10:59) | Wow, can anyone else hear the influence Leon Russell has had on Ryan Adams? I know there is one particular song of Ryan's in which his vocals sound alot like this, but can't think of the song at the moment.
|
Tears For Fears - Mad World (Dec 02, 2006 - 06:36) | I was always a big TFF fan, but I have to admit, I also prefer the Jules version of this. The first time I heard it (Jules version), it just hit me like a ton of bricks.
|
The Flaming Lips - Vein of Stars (Dec 02, 2006 - 05:58) | I second all of the comments about seeing this band live: it's the only band I've truly enjoyed live without ever having previously listened to them.
