This song gives me goose bumps..

I'm not sure that's an insult. Wreck is an easy 10. Sure, it was overplayed in its day and it's sappy but it has a visceral truthiness to it that's hard to resist. 2 Kool isn't bad. I give it a 7.

Ditto. I didn't discover them until the early '90s when all shook down came out. From there, I worked backwards and became hooked.

I love this song in particular because for me it sums up what I admire most about Ani DiFranco, specifically her refusal to let anyone dictate to her who she should be.

We all know the first part of the song is about two women putting up with the rude stares of the provincial townfolk, but how many people listen to the rest of the lyrics?  The whole second half of the song is an attack on the Lesbian Feminist culture of the day that dictated how a woman was supposed to dress (baggy plaid), what makeup to wear (none), and argued incessantly on the correct spelling of "woman" (is it "womyn", or "wommin", or what?).

Ani knew then that if a group is "freeing" you from oppression only to tell you what to wear or how to behave, then they really aren't freeing you at all, they're just giving you a new set of chains.

She shows us what Feminism can be, and she's my hero.

I'd win every time because NO ONE SOUNDS LIKE Emmylou, IMHO. And I like Patty, don't misunderstand. She just doesn't sound much like Emmylou to me....

I wish this guy would take a clue from Elliot Smith or Nick Drake.

'In My Tribe' is my favorite 10K album, and maybe because it was my first intro to them. I'd love to hear 'Painted Desert' on RP, as it's one of my all-time fav songs!! I still have this on cassette somewhere, and it has the 'Peace Train' recording, which was later removed from the album, due to some trouble with publishing rights, I believe.

Having to constantly put up with crap like this every day is what keeps my money far, far from RP.

This song pulls at me every time. It's a rare work that can capture such strong emotion and elicit the response so consistently (or at least for this listener).
