I like Neil Young but the irony of this song is, like most of Neil Young's music, its not really danceable unless you're doing like a Grateful Dead-style dance.
David Bowie - Modern Love

Elvis Costello - Monkey To Man
(Nov 08, 2007 - 06:44)
Not a horrible song I guess but it never would have made the cut on any of EC's first 5 or 6 albums. It's like he forgot how to write a clever melody and chord progression. This song rides on one chord almost throughout and there's nothing original about the melody.

John Lee Hooker - Dimples
(Nov 02, 2007 - 06:40)
I saw John Lee Hooker in a Blues bar in San Francisco with a couple of young ladies. He was just in the audience not playing, dancing with the girls. I walked up to him and said in his ear, "a-Boom, Boom, Boom" and he just answered, "a-How, How, How"
Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Trampled Rose

"Clark Gable" off of this record is a better song. These guys have a similar squirmy approach as Death Cab for Cutie.
The Police - Bring On The Night

If RP would EVER play something from the first two albums you might understand how great they were - this song shows how they lost their ideas and energy toward the end.
Jeff Buckley - Lover, You Should've Come Over
(Oct 05, 2007 - 07:28)
Saw Jeff when he was an unknown, playing a benefit for a food coop in Brooklyn. He played by himself. Allan Ginsburg read poetry there. After the show it looked very much like Allan was on the make for Jeff.

the so-called glottal "catch" or stop is a vocal style you hear in a lot of traditional Celtic singing. it's not that Delores is trying to sound like Sinead -- it's that both women were raised around traditional Irish music, and likely learned to use their voices that way.

Yeah but it became a 90's cliche in that Sarah McGlaughlin (sic), Alanis Morrisette and countless others started doing it.

The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary

Couldn't you sing "Love Removal Machine" to this music? I still dig the Cult.
John Mellencamp - Human Wheels

this is the best Mellencamp tune I've ever heard - way better than his "hits"
The Band - This Wheel's On Fire

sounds old dated, faded and tired to me.
Pearl Jam - Yellow Ledbetter

I never get much of a sense of what PJ songs are about - maybe its the enunciation or lack thereof- just doesn't move me. The music isn't interesting enough to overcome this vacuum
Muddy Waters - I Just Want to Make Love to You

this gets more play than it deserves - its a bit of an oddity, curiosity, novelty. RP plays it way more than the original classic which isn't right.

Iron & Wine - Love and Some Verses

I wonder what it would take to get this guy to sing above a whisper?
Elvis Costello - Beyond Belief

Waits version blows this away. Hammond's is a relaxed, breezy, languid interpretation which is at odds with the desperate nature of the lyrics.

I like the early David Byrne better, the one who had some angst, the one who was creating a new kind of dance music like what you hear on the first 4 Talking Heads albums. Now he's all about being cute and doing latin inspired, "world" music - nothing particularly new or interesting. This trend started with songs like this.

Never big fans of corporate rock, or FM radio, members of LZ were complaining that Stairway and Black Dog were getting all the air play. When asked what they thought was better they mentioned "The Rover" as being much better, and I have to agree.

If they liked it so much how come they never played it much live, that I know of at least?

Hey, this guy sounds like Blake without the human beatbox noises
Phil Collins - In the Air Tonight
(May 23, 2007 - 12:26)
in high school I ran with a group of kids who used to label guys (preps, mostly) who dressed and listened to Phil Collins as "Phil's" -

Usage - Dude that Phil is after you cause you bumped his beemer.

I could never figure out why this song was so appealing to so many folks.
Steven Delopoulos - Seasons
(May 23, 2007 - 11:35)
mediocre - why is Dylan great and this guy not - even though he has a better voice? Because Dylan would crystallize all the lyrical quality in this whole song into just one line, instead this guy has to repeat the same lines over and over until they just sound inane.
Rodrigo Y Gabriela - Diablo Rojo

The Godard, or was it Truffault movie is strange but half of it is the stones recording this. It really opened my eyes just how much control Keith had. There's no doubt he was the musical director - I think he even played bass on this. The other's pretty much did what they were told. Of course Mick has a strong input but music-wise, its all about Keith.
Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run

Marketing your song in a commercial is now the best and getting to be the only, viable way to sell your music rather than selling it at your shows. U2 - Bad

The challenge is calling them a rock band. There's just about zilch sex, drugs and rock n roll in their music. Chuck Berry it ain't. I't s not much fun. It's hard to dance to them. Most of their beats are marches.

They are also very sanctimonious. But on the plus side, they always seem to get better as the years go round and there is room for music for our "souls" as opposed to soul music and their guitar sound is as unique and as innovative as any to ever come along.

Tori Amos is so much like Kate Bush both in vocal style, and in musical arrangement and I would say subject matter that its impossible to listen to her and not hear Kate. Tori Amos is an American copy of the original.

I like some of her stuff, but this is dramatically awful. Seems too much to be a product of the time.

This song will be played and appreciated long after most 80's stuff is forgotten. It has a universal theme - I'd say its a classic.

how can you hear those drums and not think of Ballroom Blitz?
English Beat - Save It for Later
(Apr 03, 2007 - 09:37)
I saw a couple of dates on an early IRS tour with R.E.M. opening. It took me years to take R.E.M. seriously after seeing the Beat blow them off the stage twice.
Jerry Lee Lewis - Pink Cadillac (w/ Bruce Springsteen)
(Apr 02, 2007 - 09:39)
Don't forget Natalie Cole's version, not the best but she was cute in the video
Prince - When Doves Cry
(Apr 02, 2007 - 09:13)
I'm surprised this has such a low rating. This song and the "bass-less" minimalist production influenced a whole slew of 80's and 90's artists from INXS to Van Halen and on and on. In fact I can't think of many songs that had nearly as much influence as When Doves Cry
Coldplay - Clocks

He's tall, good-looking, married to Gwen Paltrow so his life doesn't suck but the name of the band does and his songs aren't really about anything - he's no poet - this song is catchy and makes me think of airports and taxi's
Spacehog - In The Meantime
(Mar 30, 2007 - 12:57)
this song is a 10 - did Spacehog make anything else anywhere near as good as this?
New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle
(Mar 30, 2007 - 12:35)
God, how many times did I hear this in clubs during the late 80's? Hundreds?
Greg Brown - Who Woulda Thunk It
(Mar 30, 2007 - 08:45)
This is Ho-Hum material. One might think of Bob Dylan when you hear this voice but can you image Dylan singing such an inane lyric over and over again as "Who woulda thunk it?" - the cuteness wears out by the second refrain.
Radio Citizen (feat. Bajka) - The Hop
(Mar 30, 2007 - 08:33)
Sounds like Eryka Badu - someone I've never heard on RP and would fit in nicely btw.

self-conscious gimmickry.

a misguided contrivance.

luckily, rp also plays some of beck's more successful efforts!

admit it , you just can't dance can you?
Nick Drake - Cello Song

Chicks dig him more that guys. They love that lost, dreamy, puppy-dog quality about him. He didn't have all that much to say though did he?

Surprise to me too!

Any band that had as guitarists: Clapton, Beck and Page (although not all at the same time) can't be called anything other than legendary

Paul had enormous value in the Beatles. It could even be argued that in the second half he was the most important member. Do you not like the songs that Paul wrote? Many great songs from the Beatles' albums - in particular, from Sgt. Pepper forward - were Paul's. As an example, most of the good songs on Let It Be were his. Oh, and Sgt. Pepper was his idea....

Paul was/is extremeley talented and integral to what the Beatles were but in the latter half it could be argued he was certainly the corniest of the four. And his love for smaltz weighed the group down. One could understand the frustration the other's felt as inordinate time went into recording idiotic Paul tunes like "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" while John was begging for someone to help put some time into recording the masterpiece "Across the Universe"

Miles Davis - Concierto De Aranjuez

Apparently Miles himself was bored with the record and in his bio said he never listened to it after it was recorded.
TV On the Radio - Things You Can Do

The brass and guitar sound Afro Beat, like Fela.
Samples - Did You Ever Look So Nice

for a second I thought I heard John Cale's viola part in "Venus and Furs" on this song
