Simon & Garfunkel - The Sound of Silence
(May 23, 2013 - 06:09)
According to the story I heard on the CBC recently, the original acoustic version of this song was a flop when it was released. A producer took the song back into the studio and overdubbed drums and electric guitar. (He did so without S&G's knowledge or approval because they were "no longer a working duo.") The studio re-released it and, well ...

Paolo Nutini - Jenny Don't Be Hasty
(May 23, 2013 - 05:29)
I think he's begging Jenny not to hit PSD.

Simon & Garfunkel - America

Does it say something about us as a culture that a song about lost youth has become a touchstone of sorts? I mean, you don't have Leonard Cohen crooning, "We're off in search of Canada..."

Leonard Cohen may not have done the "off in search of Canada" thing, but lots of other Canadian performers have, including Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, Sam Roberts, Stompin' Tom Connors and Ian Tyson. (Mostly without the wistfulness of S&G's song, of course. "Helpless" being a major exception.) I'm sure those songs have not been heard in the States because FM radio programers don't want to play songs about the prairie and how damn cold it is.

For what it's worth, I do not know whether Stompin' Tom ever mentioned Lightfoot or Young by name, but he was disdainful of those Canadian performers who went south of the border to seek larger fame and dollars. He felt they should have been truer to their Canadian heritage. To my knowledge, Stompin' Tom performed on American television only once.

Take care.

Claude Debussy - Jardins sous la pluie
(May 17, 2013 - 05:49)
I hear strains of Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto.

Victoria Williams - Crazy Mary
(May 14, 2013 - 12:48)
Ghastly.

Bird York - In The Deep
(May 14, 2013 - 08:55)
You know, she could have had it all by rolling in it.

Bob Dylan - One More Cup Of Coffee
(May 13, 2013 - 15:17)
I hope it's "bird friendly" shade-grown coffee.

Duke Ellington - How High The Moon
(May 09, 2013 - 15:32)
Sigh! Any version of this sends me off the deep end!

Vienna Teng - Blue Caravan
(May 09, 2013 - 05:50)
I heard the other day that Vienna Teng has taken up residence in Ann Arbor while she is working on a degree master's degree in global sustainability at the University of Michigan.

I'll have to look for her at the football games.

Roger Waters - What God Wants (part 1)
(May 07, 2013 - 07:11)
God has a long list of wants. But what does he need?

XTC - Summer's Cauldron
(May 06, 2013 - 16:28)
Like a bug in brandy...

Muse - Knights of Cydonia
(May 06, 2013 - 11:37)
Let's see ... listen to this or go see my tax attorney.

The tax attorney wins!

Traffic - Walking in the Wind
(May 06, 2013 - 09:52)
Ah-h-h-h-h-h-h!

(This was my earworm while I was out birding last Saturday morning.)

Unkle - The Healing (w/ Gavin Clark)
(May 06, 2013 - 04:18)
I'm so glad this guy is healing from the blow. Now, can someone make my ears stop bleeding?

Dave Mason - Look At You Look At Me
(May 01, 2013 - 09:15)
That does it. I want my $10 back!

Dave Mason - Look At You Look At Me
(May 01, 2013 - 09:03)
Was Dave Mason's nickname "Skippy"?

Cab Calloway - The Jumpin' Jive
(Apr 28, 2013 - 16:45)
Bill:

Try following this with "Ain't Misbehavin' " by Fats Waller sometime. That might be a pretty cool combination.

Guillemots - Southern Winds
(Apr 28, 2013 - 11:40)
First there was Shearwater. Then there was Guillemots. I can't wait for The Ancient Murrelets!

Alpha Rev - New Morning
(Apr 26, 2013 - 04:03)
How many notes can one person squeeze out of the word "morning"?

Elton John - Where To Now St. Peter

I knew I should have turned left at Albuquerque.

Johnny Nash - I Can See Clearly Now
(Apr 24, 2013 - 06:48)
If only this song were literal.

Can somebody do something about this spring's weather? Please?

Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond

Trouble for the youth of today is sorting out the sh**e from the good stuff, there's just so much mediocre tat that gets pedalled to distract them.  I've tried with my two children but they are lured away by the nonsense that their friends listen to.  Am working on them subliminally, playing them RP whilst they sleep!!  Any suggestions from other parents welcomed!

Two suggestions:

First, have it on as background noise in a central part of the house. They'll pick up bits and pieces. My kids love the shallow pop that they hear on the radio, but I watched with amazement the other day as my younger daughter strolled through the kitchen singing "Wish You Were Here."

Second: Challenge them to listen to a song and then have them compare it to what they are hearing on the radio today. I was in the car with one of the daughters recently when "Brass In Pocket" came on the radio. I asked her to compare the desperate emotion in Chrissie Hynde's voice to the AutoTuned music she hears today. She got it.

We as "old people" are never going to win the battle. All we can do is hope the next generation can discover deeper, richer, more rewarding music on their own.

Best wishes.

Gladys Knight & the Pips - Midnight Train to Georgia
(Apr 21, 2013 - 11:12)
Whoo-Hoo!

The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby
(Apr 09, 2013 - 07:19)
I heard William Shatner's version of this on the radio last Saturday. After all these years, his interpretation remains ... special.

Alanis Morissette - Thank U
(Apr 03, 2013 - 18:23)
Normally I'm unhappy when there are problems with the stream ...

Ella Fitzgerald & Joe Pass - Nature Boy
(Mar 28, 2013 - 03:08)
I love Ella. I hate this song.

Billie Holiday - Ain't Nobody's Business If I Do
(Mar 27, 2013 - 16:25)
Huh. I've never really thought of Billie Holiday as an Ayn Rand objectivist.

Paul Simon - Was A Sunny Day
(Mar 20, 2013 - 04:36)
I suppose it's better than Mimin' Simon. There would have been 3:41 of silence.

Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
(Mar 16, 2013 - 12:55)
Remember Captain and Tennille, "Love, love will keep us together"? The story I heard on the CBC the other day said that this song was written in direct response to Captain and Tennille's bouncy yet insipid hit.

Tom Petty - A Face In The Crowd
(Mar 15, 2013 - 08:14)
A typical Tom Petty song:

Four or five grunted syllables.

Pause.

Four or five grunted syllables.

Repeat.

Alanis Morissette - That I Would Be Good
(Mar 15, 2013 - 03:27)
Oh, if only you were good.

James - Laid

Nudge! Nudge! Wink! Wink! Say no more!

James Dapogny's Chicago Jazz Band - Caravan

For what it's worth, Dapogny is professor emeritus at the University of Michigan.

Pearl Jam - You Are
(Mar 14, 2013 - 06:07)

Tom Waits - Step Right Up

Electric Light Orchestra - Oh No Not Susan
(Mar 04, 2013 - 16:11)
Susan? What's the matter with Susan?

Elliott Brood - Northern Air
(Mar 01, 2013 - 09:30)
It's March 1 and it's 29F outside my window right now. I am tired of this northern air.

The Kinks - Victoria
(Mar 01, 2013 - 07:57)
Glad nobody else is home right now so I can crank it up and sing along.

It's A Beautiful Day - White Bird
(Feb 26, 2013 - 13:01)
White bird must fly or it will die. No gray areas there!

Devo - Beautiful World
(Feb 22, 2013 - 19:08)
So uplifting...

The Amazing Rhythm Aces - Burning the Ballroom Down
(Feb 21, 2013 - 19:16)
I dunno. Somehow this reminds me of Mink DeVille.

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
(Feb 19, 2013 - 16:46)
My 13-year-old daughter strolled through the kitchen singing this the other day.

"We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fishbowl
Year after year ... "

It was a moment tinged with both pride and pain.

Joan Baez - Diamonds and Rust
(Feb 19, 2013 - 13:30)
Joan Baez, a New York City native, was a fixture of the Northeast folk scene in the 1970s. This was released in 1975, just as New York's punk scene was taking off. After listening to this yet again, it's easy to see how a new generation of New Yorkers could reject this in favor of simplistic three-chord songs played fast and loud.

Beth Orton - Call Me the Breeze
(Feb 16, 2013 - 14:34)
Sugaring season started today. The trees are tapped, buckets are hung and we're ready for the sap to flow!

Pink Floyd - Grantchester Meadows
(Feb 16, 2013 - 13:06)
I'm getting twitchy!

Gus Black - Fall Into You
(Feb 15, 2013 - 03:54)
I hear Jeff Buckley.

Queen - We Will Rock You

Ah, the legendary Grande Ballroom. I took the Grand River bus past it every day to get to high school but never set foot inside. I bow before you.

Neko Case - Star Witness
(Feb 06, 2013 - 10:03)
My one and only complaint with RP: When songs overlap in transition and the first few notes of the next song mingle with the final few notes of the song that is ending. On most songs it doesn't matter. On this one, to me at least, it does.

The Who - I'm One
(Feb 05, 2013 - 14:00)
I'm one, too.

Joan Osborne - Shake Your Hips
(Jan 28, 2013 - 04:15)
I know I am in the minority on this, but I find this annoying.

The Rock-A-Teens - Woo Hoo
(Jan 26, 2013 - 14:54)
I suddenly have an urge to call India.

Michael Penn - No Myth (acoustic)
(Jan 24, 2013 - 14:59)
Wonder if Sean Penn ever says, "You've probably heard of my brother ..."

Violent Femmes - Out The Window
(Jan 24, 2013 - 09:33)
Here Comes Your Man —> Out The Window

One in ... one out.

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - Running Man's Bible
(Jan 20, 2013 - 15:10)
Boring.

Boring, boring, boring.

Family Of The Year - Buried
(Jan 16, 2013 - 08:48)
Bury me with my Chucks? I can see that.

PJ Harvey - On Battleship Hill
(Jan 15, 2013 - 10:54)
As sung by Sarah Brightman?

Robert Palmer - Man Smart (Woman Smarter)
(Jan 15, 2013 - 10:26)
I give Palmer credit; he sure knew how to appeal to women.

Anni B Sweet - Take On Me
(Jan 15, 2013 - 08:38)
Yeah, but can she sing as high as he can?

Oh, that just answered the question!

Chingon - Malagueña Salerosa

The Chemical Brothers - The Devil is in the Details
(Jan 10, 2013 - 03:40)
Taken out of context, it's little more than a novelty.

Steely Dan - Aja

I agree. It's like visiting an old friend.

Beth Orton - Call Me the Breeze
(Jan 02, 2013 - 07:34)
Sugaring Season? Okay, here's a question for you: What's the difference between a maple syrup maker in Vermont and one in New Hampshire?

The Vermonter goes out to gather the sap, opens the lid to the bucket on the tree, finds a dead squirrel in the sap, looks around to see if no one is looking, removes the dead squirrel and collects the sap.

The New Hampshire maple syrup maker goes out to gather the sap, opens the lid to the bucket on the tree, finds a dead squirrel in the sap, looks around to see if no one is looking, rings out the dead squirrel and collects the sap.

Thanks to my friends in New England for that one!

(Dec 24, 2012 - 14:11)

Allow me to pause for a moment to take it in.

Amy Macdonald - Slow It Down
(Dec 24, 2012 - 11:41)
You know what they say: If it isn't Scottish ...

Joni Mitchell - River
(Dec 21, 2012 - 15:13)
There's a long-winded appreciation of Joni in the Dec. 17 issue of The New Yorker. Take my word for it, it's not worth your time.

Beethoven - Symphony No.5 - Allegro Con Brio
(Dec 18, 2012 - 11:49)
I learned today that the metronome was invented a few years after Beethoven wrote his Symphony No. 5. So, some 10 years after he wrote this, and being fully deaf, Beethoven used the metronome to put the finishing touch on the piece. He added a speed at which this movement should be played: 108 beats per minute.

Foo Fighters - Down In The Park
(Dec 18, 2012 - 07:40)
How do I join this band? I can fight foo with the best of 'em.

Good timing! I was just in the process of sending out an email about a snowy owl that is being seen in my area.

Louis Armstrong - Savoy Blues
(Dec 12, 2012 - 18:06)
Now, if we could just figure out how to work Potato Head Blues into the mix.

Florence and The Machine - Cosmic Love
(Dec 11, 2012 - 06:27)
I don't know. I just can't put my finger on it. There's lots of energy, yes, but there's something about Flo and her machine that feels phony or contrived to me.

Amy LaVere - Washing Machine
(Dec 11, 2012 - 04:50)
Amateurish.

Dengue Fever - Seeing Hands
(Dec 07, 2012 - 14:14)
As sung by the Twin Fairies in "Mothra vs. Godzilla".

David Lindley - Mercury Blues
(Dec 07, 2012 - 07:40)
I used to drive a Mercury Tracer wagon. Bought it because there was plenty of room for my hockey gear. Because I was buying a wagon, the salesman at the dealership jokingly accused me of being a single guy in search of a family.

Funny guy...

Why does everything these days have to be so short, and say so little? Something to do with ever decreasing attention spans?

As you probably know, this song is about a fictitious town in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, and the damage coal mining did to the landscape, rivers and people. I recently took a drive through Kentucky and was appalled to see "Friends of Coal" vanity license plates on several cars.

Oh, my my! I turned on CBC-TV this morning to see if the Olympics were on, but instead I found Jill Barber singing a version of this to Mamma Yamma. (Hey, it's children's television!) Jill stepped in to buck up Mamma Yamma because the toothless yam in an apron was afraid to go to the dentist. (Hey, it's children's television!)

Heard a story about this song on the CBC the other day. The announcer said that Stipe's lyrics are intentionally incomprehensible. When he recorded the song he just strung together a bunch of stuff that he made up on the spot. When he sang live, he often changed the lyrics, but nobody knew because nobody knew what the actual lyrics were! The CBC announcer also that this was the song that changed the musical landscape, ushering in the era of "indie" rock. (That's debatable, I'm sure.)

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here (w/ Stephane Grappelli)
(Apr 17, 2012 - 04:21)
I dunno...

The original — or the one that I am certainly most familiar with — is plaintive enough. Grappelli's violin certainly adds a new aspect, but I can't say that it takes this to a new level. To me, it's more distracting than anything else.

I think if I were to mess with this today, I'd bring in Yo-Yo Ma and his cello and have him tap into the sweet yet melancholic vibe he created on his recording of "Songs My Mother Taught Me."

Moe - New York City
(Jul 28, 2011 - 07:13)
Although I like the song, I'm not sure it captures New York City. The rhythm of the falling rain? I've been to New York, Bangkok, Reykjavik, Paris and elsewhere. Falling rain sounds the same in every city. A 5 a.m. cab ride? I could take a 5 a.m. cab ride in Cleveland. Manhattan goddess with your Levi's and curls? The women I've known in Manhattan wouldn't go near a pair of Levi's!

New York City is special because of its manic, neurotic grandeur. Although the composer was trying to portray an intimate relationship, I think the lyrics are just too generic to accurately reflect a love affair with a city that is unlike anyplace else.

My two cents.

Off the British Columbia coast, morning spilt from the damaged vessel across the country, reversing the natural order in which those in the east wake up first. Many of us in the west were traumatized by having been woken up much too early, during deep REM sleep.  Greenpeace members, who would have been the first to point out the inherit dangers of shipping morning, were too dazed to organize themselves. The morning industry has only grown since then, controlled by a few Japanese exporters whose red-sun flags remind us who controls whom. And while there have been no other incidents, many Canadians go to bed nervous each night, not knowing which would be worse: if morning never came, or if it came too soon.

Welch's lyrics strike a nerve. Just to be heard, so many marginal musicians and bloggers are so willing to give away their talents for free on the Internet that they are dragging down the established and legitimate.

It's a new paradigm, but it isn't necessarily better. Now, we're all killing each other to work for nothing.

(Jul 01, 2010 - 13:58)
Reminds me of James Cagney in "White Heat":

"Made it, Ma! Top of the world!"

One of the great film scenes ever.

Neko Case - Deep Red Bells
(Jun 11, 2010 - 06:24)
"The Passenger" to this? Nice segue, Bill!

Great Lake Swimmers - Pulling on a Line
(May 26, 2010 - 19:09)
I used to be a Great Lake swimmer. I spent a lot of time in Lake Erie as a kid. That may explain why I glow in the dark today.

Coldplay - Violet Hill
(May 24, 2010 - 18:29)
Run away!

Sufjan Stevens - For the Widows in Paradise, For the Fatherless in Ypsilanti
(May 21, 2010 - 07:10)
I'm sure Sufjan's actually singing about Ypsilanti, North Dakota.

Amanda Palmer - Astronaut (A Short History Of Nearly Nothing)
(May 21, 2010 - 06:35)
For what it's worth, The Boston Globe named her the city's most stylish woman in 2006.

I know you were just dying for that tidbit...

(May 17, 2010 - 07:01)

Film noir set to music.

Norah Jones - Chasing Pirates

Funny choice of clothes for chasing pirates. Oh, well! Off to Somalia with ya!

Dandy Livingstone - Rudy a Message to You
(Apr 16, 2010 - 08:09)
"Rudy" performed by a crooner. An early attempt at modern hipster irony, perhaps?

Jeremy Kittel - Disconnect
(Apr 15, 2010 - 10:23)
Saw him in Ann Arbor a few years ago. Everybody in the room was awestruck.

Weather Report - Birdland
(Mar 30, 2010 - 09:10)

(Mar 26, 2010 - 13:21)
The world's greatest song about absolutely nothing.

Music for people with long attention spans. I am proud to consider myself part of that group.

Johnny Clegg & Savuka - Scatterlings of Africa
(Mar 18, 2010 - 08:59)
A slightly more sophisticated Toto.

The Cure - Close To Me
(Mar 17, 2010 - 16:24)
Following in the thread ... Do I admit my first 45 was "Indiana Wants Me" by R. Dean Taylor?

The Real Tuesday Weld - I Believe

Morrissey - Everyday Is Like Sunday

Did anyone else notice that the National Football League used this song in one of their promotional ads?

Nick Drake - Pink Moon
(Feb 10, 2010 - 17:13)
A good song spoiled: Michigan State University now uses this in a promotional ad to brag about how "green" they are. Ugh.

Tom Petty - Here Comes My Girl
(Feb 08, 2010 - 14:45)
I have never understood Tom Petty's popularity.

Flame away!

Santana - Toussaint L'Overture
(Feb 04, 2010 - 16:04)
Toussaint L'Overture? Didn't he play football for the University of Washington back in the 1980s?

Pearl Jam - Just Breathe
(Jan 28, 2010 - 11:43)
Please, Bill, give this a rest.

M. Ward - Four Hours In Washington
(Jan 22, 2010 - 11:38)
Sounds like "Randy Scouse Git" by the Monkees. Seriously.

Fleetwood Mac - Tusk
(Jan 22, 2010 - 04:42)
"Tusk" is actually a verb. It means "to jump a shark."

Vampire Weekend - Horchata
(Jan 19, 2010 - 09:16)
Article on these guys in this morning's New York Times.

Cold War Kids - Audience
(Jan 12, 2010 - 07:40)
The influence of The White Stripes is obvious.

I agree. But I'd rather be the president of General Motors today than a year ago. Some more dead wood has to go, but now that the company has dumped its obligations onto the taxpayers, the CEO has an opportunity to create something significant and special. That said, I'm not confident that there's enough brainpower left to get it done.

Jackson Browne - For A Dancer
(Jan 09, 2010 - 06:43)
There's a very Sunday morning-like quality to Jackson Browne's voice.

Squeeze - Cool for Cats
(Jan 08, 2010 - 10:44)
Sounds like John Oliver singing.

Rodrigo y Gabriela - Stairway to Heaven
(Jan 03, 2010 - 11:00)
I still prefer Stairway to Gilligan's Island.

Buena Vista Social Club - El Cuarto de Tula
(Jan 01, 2010 - 14:30)
I visited Havana in late January-early February of 2004. One of the things that I loved most about that city was that there was music like this everywhere. Walking through the streets of Old Havana was just an awesome experience. I stopped to watch a flamenco dancer in the lobby of the Hotel Valencia. She was the most seductive woman I have ever seen. Or was it the city itself?

The Clash - I Fought The Law

Driving with the brakes on? I didn't realize these guys were that old. Do they have a sequel to this song called "Turning Right From the Left Lane"?

Off to the DMV with ya!

Gordon Lightfoot - The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald
(Nov 23, 2009 - 04:34)
Those of us who are old enough to remember are still dumbfounded at the sinking of the Edmund Fitz. I have no connection to the Great Lakes shipping community, other than to watch the big boats come and go on the Detroit River, but I still felt the loss.

Lyrics:

In a room that had a postcard on the door
Of Marini's Little Man
With an erection on a horse

I've always wondered about this: Does Marini's Little Man have an erection while he is on a horse? Or is Marini's Little Man with an erection on a horse?

Either way, it's sloppy writing.

They Might Be Giants - Birdhouse In Your Soul
(Nov 11, 2009 - 08:19)
Aargh! I desperately want to sing along, but I'm sitting in the waiting room at the doctor's office right now...

Gaye Delorme - Sailor, Sailor

"Hello, sailor," she said in a smoky voice. "Wanna party?"

John Lee Hooker - Boogie Chillen
(Oct 29, 2009 - 14:05)
"When I first came to town, people, I was walkin´ down Hastings Street,
I heard everybody talkin´ ´bout the Henry Swing Club."

Hastings Street was the center of black life in Detroit from the 1920s to the 1950s. One particular section was called "Paradise Valley" for its collection of bars and clubs that could rival anything in Harlem.

John Lee Hooker arrived in Detroit in 1943, and quickly made a name for himself.

Hastings Street today? One block remains. Most of Hastings Street was torn up in the 1950s and is now a section of I-75 that runs north out of downtown Detroit.

Big Head Todd & The Monsters - Bittersweet
(Oct 26, 2009 - 05:19)

This sounds like a good time to stray from my computer.

Rodney Crowell - Sex and Gasoline
(Oct 20, 2009 - 04:30)
Structured and sung as if he was trying to emulate Nick Lowe.

Turin Brakes - Self Help

I know it's early in the morning, but this isn't doing anything for me...

English Beat - Save It for Later
(Sep 23, 2009 - 15:32)
The problem with this song is that it has faded into background noise. I hear it so often that I take it for granted. I probably don't appreciate it as much as I should.

Nada Surf - Always Love

I urge you to heed this song's advice. If you're ever in a sailboat race and you're afraid of being over the starting line early,

Bad Company - Seagull

As president of my local Audubon chapter, I'd like to say that I do not approve of gulls being abused by bad lyrics.

Patti Smith - Frederick
(Jul 14, 2009 - 12:07)
Fred "Sonic" Smith was a local legend in Detroit. He left us too soon.

Pink Floyd - Us & Them -> Eclipse
(Jul 13, 2009 - 16:00)
I've always thought this should be followed by at least a minute of silence, just to let it sink in.

Xavier Rudd - Mana
(Jul 02, 2009 - 18:48)
The didg is one of the most difficult instruments to play. You have to be able to breathe in and out at the same time. Try it.

Nina Simone - My Baby Just Cares For Me

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... This, this is the sound of perfection.

War - City Country City

Starsailor - Stars And Stripes

Townspeople:
Oh, there's nothing halfway
About the Iowa way to treat you,
When we treat you
Which we may not do at all.
There's an Iowa kind of special
Chip-on-the-shoulder attitude.
We've never been without.
That we recall.
We can be cold
As our falling thermometers in December
If you ask about our weather in July.
And we're so by God stubborn
We could stand touchin' noses
For a week at a time
And never see eye-to-eye.
But what the heck, you're welcome,
Join us at the picnic.
You can eat your fill
Of all the food you bring yourself.
You really ought to give Iowa a try.
Provided you are contrary,
We can be cold
As our falling thermometer in December
If you ask about our weather in July.
And we're so by God stubborn
We can stand touchin' noses
For a week at a time
And never see eye-to-eye.
But we'll give you our shirt
And a back to go with it
If your crops should happen to die.

Farmer:
So, what the heck, you're welcome,
Glad to have you with us.

Farmer and Wife:
Even though we may not ever mention it again.

Townspeople:
You really ought to give Iowa
Hawkeye Iowa
Dubuque, Des
Moines, Davenport, Marshalltown,
Mason City, Keokuk, Ames,
Clear Lake
Ought to give Iowa a try!

You just can't figure out that this is all subjective, and like bung-holes, everyone has one; yours just seems to be pimplier and farts much louder than most others. I just can't help myself here, but I came across something that fits you way too well:

Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1) -

ex·cel·si·or /ɪkˈsɛlsiər, ɛk-/ Pronunciation Key - -noun
1. fine wood shavings, used for stuffing, packing, etc.
2. Printing. a 3-point type: a size smaller than brilliant.
Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1)
Based on the Random House Unabridged Dictionary, © Random House, Inc. 2006.

So what are you today besides pissy? Are you wood shavings? Stuffing? Or maybe 3-point, which by the way is extremely tiny, verging on illegible without an aid?

We think you're a masochist because you continue to listen to RP, which after reading your many negative comments and the tilted distribution of your ratings, clearly shows that you hold most all that you hear on this station in the highest disdain (a.k.a., your favorite ratings are 1's and 2's). Come on smart-mouth, go start your own station or find something else to listen to, but for the greater good, GO AWAY or figure out that your comments appeal to you and you only and might be better if left unposted! I suppose we could just ask Bill to automatically make your comments what they are, excelsior as in 3-point.

(Jun 04, 2008 - 14:59)
This reminds me that I gotta go do some work in the garden...

The Audreys - Long Ride
(Jun 04, 2008 - 14:41)
Is it too late to suggest a set? How about The Audreys followed by The Sadies followed by The Wailin Jennys? Who am I missing?

Boz Scaggs - Loan Me A Dime

Death Cab For Cutie - I Will Possess Your Heart
(May 21, 2008 - 09:04)
While I'm at it, I'll possess your spleen and gallbladder, too.
XTC - Senses Working Overtime
(May 11, 2008 - 13:18)
I have loved these guys for years. If you don't get XTC, here's what you need to know to understand these guys:

1) They bring a pagan attitude to everything they do. They are more in tune with human nature and the natural world than religion.

2) They are a pop band. Nothing more.

3) Their lyrics are clever in the same way that a crossword puzzle can be clever.

Elton John - Funeral For a Friend - Love Lies Bleeding
(May 08, 2008 - 15:09)
Another "I'm sure no one will care" comment:

This album is a bit of a touchstone for me. I graduated from a seven-story yellow brick high school in downtown Detroit, Cass Tech. As part of the graduating class we used to sing, "So good-bye big yellow CT ... "

Once again goes to show you that beauty is free!

Wilco - Jesus, Etc.

My earworm for the past five days. I don't know if hearing this is good or bad.
Diana Krall - Temptation
(Apr 30, 2008 - 15:30)
First Feist and now Krall. Am I listening to radio from the other side of my border? Radio Paradise just went CBC on me!

Feist - Mushaboom
(Apr 30, 2008 - 15:29)
As a parent to two kids and the partner of a loving wife, I appreciate this song's sentiments more and more.
Tom Petty - Time To Move On
(Apr 28, 2008 - 06:20)
Given that this is Tom Petty, shouldn't he be singing "Time to get dronin' "? Seems more appropriate.
Ween - The Argus
(Apr 16, 2008 - 08:01)
Friends:

I'm going to show my ignorance, and I'm sure there are more than a few of you out there who can answer this for me...

How many beats are there to the measure in this tune? It almost sounds like it is performed in waltz time. A waltz is typically written in 3/4 time, but this sounds like it's 1/3 time or something.

Please enlighten.

Thanks!

Joe Jackson - Steppin' Out
(Apr 12, 2008 - 14:56)
Perhaps someone else has mentioned this in the past, but the cover drawing of Jackson at the piano evokes the art of the great Al Hirschfeld, whose work ran in The New York Times for nearly 75 years. The lines are simple, fluid and uncluttered, and emphasize shape and texture. All we need is "Nina" hidden in a couple of places! Sunday mornings just are not the same without Hirschfeld's work on the cover of the Arts and Leisure Section...

Creedence Clearwater Revival - The Midnight Special
(Apr 04, 2008 - 02:35)
More like the 5:30 a.m. special here in the eastern U.S.!

This is the answer to 2 Down in today's NY Times crossword puzzle.

Steely Dan - The Royal Scam
(Mar 20, 2008 - 07:52)
I understand that these guys have now moved down to Florida, where they wear their pants above their waists, go to the early-bird dinners and complain about the government.
Neko Case - Buckets of Rain
(Mar 20, 2008 - 04:42)
Judging by the distinct lack of comments this morning, it would appear I'm the only one awake in the Eastern Time Zone.

Crosby Stills & Nash - Southern Cross
(Mar 18, 2008 - 19:02)
I had wanted to see the Southern Cross since I was a kid.

I got my chance on a 1992 trip to Phuket Island, Thailand, but was disappointed - it was just too hazy every night.

After dinner on our last night on Phuket, my wife and I took a walk down the beach and the sky cleared. There it was! The Southern Cross!

We found a couple of chairs and we sat under the dark sky, and I poured my heart out about how much this moment meant to me. This was one of the special moments of my life.

I sat quiet for a moment waiting for my wife to speak. Finally I heard from her. It was a long, loud snore. Yes, she had fallen asleep.

Raw passion. I remember those emotions from years gone by...
Black Sabbath - Planet Caravan
(Mar 06, 2008 - 04:39)
I wonder what's on NPR right now...

Penguin Cafe Orchestra - Scherzo and Trio
(Feb 28, 2008 - 14:43)
Any cafe that has its own orchestra is way more fun than the corner Starbucks.
Supertramp - Even In The Quietest Moments
(Feb 24, 2008 - 10:40)
Nobody else is home right now, so I can sing along like an idiot.
Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Please Read The Letter

The Who - Cut My Hair
(Feb 12, 2008 - 09:21)
To those who do not like:

Okay, this may not be your favorite tune or album, but to call it "self-indulgent" and "tripe" misses the point.

This entire album refects what artists and playwrites call "the human condition." Yes, it is viewed through one character's eyes, but it still reflects the world around him -- and us.

Much of the highest-rated music on RP refects the human condition: "The Boxer", "Wish You Were Here", "A Day in the Life". Every genre of music today reflects the human condition. But I cannot think of a single artist or band in the past 20 years that had the balls and the intellect to tackle a subject like teen angst and alienation with as much boldness and insight as this.

Rock and roll is not a genre that lends itself to deep insight. What can you possibly say in 3:20 to people with short attention spans? That's why an effort like this is so special.

War - Slippin' Into Darkness
(Feb 11, 2008 - 12:16)
I'm disappointed that "The World is a Ghetto" isn't on the RP playlist.
Taj Mahal - Take A Giant Step
(Feb 08, 2008 - 11:37)
Something about the first couple of notes to this song that always makes me smile.

Golden Earring - Twilight Zone

As a fortunate son, allow me to say that it is me.
Beethoven - Symphony No.5 - Allegro Con Brio
(Jan 06, 2008 - 18:30)
Yes, this movement is allegro con brio, but Von Karajan conducts as if he just had a Jaegerbomb or something. But that's one of the wonderful things about this kind of music -- it is so open to interpretation and exploration that it continues to sound fresh even though it was written 200 years ago.
Tom Petty - It's Good To Be King
