The Barr Brothers - Old Mythologies (Oct 13, 2012 - 23:20) | I'm so happy these guys are getting some play. I've seen them in tiny clubs with less than 20 in the audience. Love 'em!
|
Rolling Stones - Heaven (Oct 01, 2012 - 19:27) | Funny....I remember really disliking this song when the album came out (only track on the album I didn't like)....now I'm loving it. Tastes change.
|
Norah Jones - Say Goodbye (Sep 27, 2012 - 19:32) | I was gonna give this a 7...but I bumped it up to 8 because she looks so hot on the cover. Very good album.
|
David Bowie - Seven (live) (Sep 07, 2012 - 07:30) | I'm secure enough in my masculinity to admit this.... I'm completely heterosexual, except for an unhealthy fixation on David Bowie
|
John Prine - Paradise (Jun 29, 2012 - 05:42) | Who is rating this with ones and twos? What is wrong with you??
|
James McMurtry - Choctaw Bingo (Jun 27, 2012 - 13:38) | I agree with this article. This song should be the national anthem. Kids would learn all the words in school. Might slow up sporting events, but man, it'd be worth it.

Madness - One Step Beyond (Jun 20, 2012 - 15:18) | I was just reading their Wiki page. Came across this—
Madness then announced plans for a reunion concert, Madstock!, which was held at Finsbury Park, London on 8 and 9 August of that year. The original lineup reunited, performing together for the first time since Barson left the band in 1984. Over 75,000 fans attended the weekend festival, and the dancing of the boisterous crowd seemingly caused an extraordinary event of ground-shaking proportions (during "One Step Beyond", according to the legends). As seismologist Alice Walker told the 1999 BBC documentary Young Guns Go For It:On the 8th of August 1992, the police phoned the British Geological Survey, and they said that people had been phoning in saying that there had been an earthquake in London. They had described some effects like heavy lorries passing outside. People were frightened. Tower blocks were being evacuated because people thought the tower block was going to fall down. It was an intensity of about five. When I told the police that I thought the cause of the disturbance was a Madness concert at Finsbury Park, they didn't believe me at first. I got a phone call the next night from the police who said exactly the same felt effects had occurred – and so they did believe me after all. So my reputation as a seismologist still remains intact!
According to the UK's Health Protection Agency: One of the most bizarre investigations conducted by BGS using its seismic network, was in connection with an earthquake reported to be felt strongly in North London in August 1992 when three blocks of flats (8-9-storeys) were evacuated following minor damage that included cracked windows and a cracked balcony. Our seismic network showed that there had not been an earthquake or an explosion, and we were able to deduce that the cause was resonance set up by dancers at a Madness rock concert in nearby Finsbury Park. The resonance frequency of such dancing, in harmony, is tuned to the natural frequency of apartment blocks of this height, so that the movement is amplified.

Patty Griffin - Goodbye (live) (Jun 19, 2012 - 10:44) | Funny how a song can make you so emotional. Reading the posts, I can see I'm not the only one that gets choked up by this one.
|
Roxy Music - Love is the Drug (Jun 14, 2012 - 14:30) |
"If I had to choose between the two Brians, and I really would hate to do so. I would have to err on the side of Eno."

David Bowie - Wild Is The Wind (Jun 01, 2012 - 11:18) | I just looked at the ratings distribution on this song. Votes are all across the map. It's either the greatest song ever, the worst song ever, or...meh. I'm in the first camp...it's a great song.
|
Talking Heads - Air (Live) (May 31, 2012 - 08:51) | Last night I saw David Byrne's concert film Ride, Rise, Roar. Live concert film with very cool dancers. This song in particular was really nifty. The dancers were basically dancing with Strats. Playing "Air" guitar I guess. It's on Netflix streaming and well worth a watch.

Depeche Mode - In Sympathy (May 24, 2012 - 12:59) | Dr. Girlfriend: Sweetie, isn't that the guy from Depeche Mode? The Monarch: Oh, no way! Where? Holy crap, he's with a girl? Dr. Girlfriend: Oh yeah, that guy is totally straight. I saw a whole thing about him on the VH-1. The Monarch: But he's the guy from Depeche Mode! It's impossible. Dr. Girlfriend: Straight. The Monarch: Come on! He's in Depeche Mode!
|
Talking Heads - Life During Wartime (Live) (May 15, 2012 - 10:15) | Going to see Start Making Sense...a TH tribute band on Friday May 18th at Jillian's in Albany. Seen them a couple of times before, they're amazing!
|
World Party - Is It Like Today? (Apr 08, 2012 - 11:21) | Favorite World Party memory. My wife and I always dug these guys so when they played nearby SPAC we went up early and hung out in the park and had a lovely picnic on a beautiful summer day. While there the band soundchecked and we could hear 'em clear as day from the park. They played an earth shaking version of Day in the Life! Very cool to hear. Oddly they didn't touch it during the actual show but wow!

|
Suzanne Vega - Cassidy (Mar 06, 2012 - 11:24) | Really nice version. My wife & I met Cassidy...she was very kind.
|
Florence + The Machine - No Light, No Light (Feb 29, 2012 - 10:02) | They were on Austin City Limits the other night. I had never seen what the band looked like, only heard them (mostly here). I predicted barefoot twirling....and I was right!
|
Dave Matthews Band - Lying In The Hands Of God (Feb 26, 2012 - 09:59) | Nibbler - "You are the last hope of the universe!" Fry - "You mean I really am important? How I feel when I'm drunk is correct??" Nibbler - "Yes...except, the Dave Matthews Band doesn't rock."
|
Talking Heads - Air (Live) (Feb 02, 2012 - 11:09) | I saw , I swear to God, a Talking Heads tribute band last weekend. They're called Start Making Sense and they are really, really good.
|
Fleetwood Mac - Sara (Jan 10, 2012 - 03:27) | I was just reading about The Night of a Thousand Stevies!
|
Arcade Fire - Speaking in Tongues (w/ David Byrne) (Dec 29, 2011 - 23:49) | I really dig this. Probably deserves a little better rating. Speaking of David Byrne (though not in tongues)...there is, I swear to God, a Talking Heads cover band. And they're really, really fun live. They're called Start Making Sense and I'm gonna see them again in a few weeks.
|
John Lennon - #9 Dream (Dec 16, 2011 - 13:12) | I've never been that big of a Beatles/Lennon fan. Weird, I know. They're great and all, I just never seemed to dig 'em as much as the rest of the planet seems to. However, this song is just lovely.
|
Fairport Convention - Who Knows Where the Time Goes (Dec 16, 2011 - 10:37) | I went to a Richard Thompson concert recently. He performed one of Sandy's old Fairport songs and said something I totally agreed with. He said that he wished that Sandy's music would be rediscovered much like Nick Drake's music had. That would be nice.

|
Beth Orton - Central Reservation (Dec 02, 2011 - 11:19) | For the last year or so, Beth Orton has been at the very top of my music diet. Can't get enough of this woman's voice. I wanna curl up inside her voice and stay there. So tasteful, so beautiful. Wouldn't have heard of her without RP.
|
Fleetwood Mac - The Chain (Nov 30, 2011 - 21:57) | Naboo! NABOO!

|
The Cure - Pictures of You (Apr 16, 2011 - 12:07) | I was listening to some Cure on my walk today. An earlier track "Strange Day". Thought it was cool how Robert just owns that style of music. Goth juice...made from the tears of Robert Smith.

U2 - New Year's Day (Feb 01, 2011 - 21:07) | Johnny-smooth wrote: Here in Boston commercial radio plays either Zeppelin or U2 inter-changeably. The last place I want to hear them, ever, is here on RP. Please Bill, keep us challenged and our ears rich with the sounds & music rarely heard.
I understand what you're saying. Still...this is a damn powerful piece of music.
|
Ludovico Einaudi - Primavera (Jan 19, 2011 - 09:43) | Marty DiBergi: It's very nice. Nigel Tufnel: You know, just simple lines intertwining, you know, very much like - I'm really influenced by Mozart and Bach, and it's sort of in between those, really. It's like a Mach piece, really. It's sort of... Marty DiBergi: What do you call this? Nigel Tufnel: Well, this piece is called "Lick My Love Pump".

Hoodoo Gurus - Tojo (Jan 13, 2011 - 11:22) | Hurray for Mozart! I had never heard this before but got caught up in the lyric first listen. Didn't quite get them til Bill mentioned your post.
|
Tom Petty - American Girl (Nov 13, 2010 - 10:54) | I was at a Tom Petty show one time and my wife was working at the venue. She worked for the box office and had a desk on the concourse where she would answer questions and help people with problems with their tickets or their seats. I had seen Tom a bunch of times by then so I spent most of the show hanging out with her. Early in the show a woman came to the desk. She was in her 40s and was bawling her eyes out. "I can't see Tom Petty from my seat!!" I told her I had seen Tom up close and she was better off just listening.
|
The Guess Who - Shakin' All Over (Sep 23, 2010 - 10:28) | Just Wiki'd this song. Did you know AC/DC says the main riff of "Back in Black" was influenced by this song? I didn't.
|
Chris Isaak - Go Walking Down There (Sep 01, 2010 - 12:00) | I was just thinking, Chris Isaak isn't music that I would normally seek out. I gotta admit, he's got some very good songs. Nice voice, great emotion. (Apparently, he's had some troubles with his old lady). That's why I listen to RP. Get exposed to good stuff that I usually don't hear.

Dave Matthews Band - Lying In The Hands Of God (Jun 16, 2010 - 09:35) | MojoJojo wrote:I am always reminded of the time I was offered tickets to a DMB concert by a friend. He said he had two tickets he wasn't going to use. It was a double-date kinda thing. After the concert, he told me I could give him the money for my two tickets any time - no hurry. I had the impression that the tickets were gratis, but apparently he had other ideas. I was shocked at how much the tickets cost. No way I would have gone had I understood the required outlay of cash. A very Sienfeldian experience overall. I've been on the other side of that, and felt pretty stupid for not spelling it out right off the bat. Now if I offer somebody an extra ticket, I always make it plain that I gotta get the cash I laid out for it first. Speaking of which, I got two extras for Phish on Saturday. But I need $50 per.

Los Lobos - Kiko and the Lavender Moon (Jun 09, 2010 - 12:56) | Weird. I've been listening for the last few hours and this song has been floating around the back of my head. Now it's here. Get out of my head Bill!

The Who - Magic Bus (Jun 03, 2010 - 10:34) | Listen to the fadeout of this. You can hear Pete say "I SAW YA!" Keith Moon was trying all day to disrupt the backing vocal session, so they tied him to a chair in the control booth. He wriggled himself out of it just as they were finishing it and he jumped up right at the end.
|
The Kinks - Come Dancing (May 28, 2010 - 11:11) | Awww. This song just made me sad. Last night I went to see Billy Kreutzman & The Seven Walkers @ Revolution Hall in Troy, NY. The place is closing next month. It's my favorite venue in the world. Had such a great time last night. This song reminds me of all we're gonna miss. *sniff
|
Los Lobos - Bertha (May 19, 2010 - 22:20) | Likin' the string of GD covers. This one's got something special. I heard these guys cover Cinnamon Girl live once. Pretty cool. Hell, Los Lobos could cover a Vanilla Ice song and it would still sound pretty cool.
|
Harvey Mandel - Wade In The Water (May 11, 2010 - 12:48) | This has never happened before, and I wish I were kidding or overstating it. This song literally made me throw up. I'm a little hungover and was nauseous before I started listening, but there it is. A song I don't like made me hurl. Feeling better now, but I might have a bug coming on.

She's dressed really hot and looks really good. See.

New Order - Temptation (May 02, 2010 - 08:34) | Always liked this song. Sounds like they replaced their guitar strings with rubber bands. The rest of this soundtrack is fantastic.

Al Green - Take Me To The River (Apr 27, 2010 - 18:25) | Never noticed the dedication at the beginning, to the redundantly named Little Junior Parker. Nice Al!
|
Eels - A Line In the Dirt (Apr 22, 2010 - 09:36) | I like the Eels. I just spent the last few minutes trying to figure out if the band name came from the Mighty Boosh episode. For the record, the band name predates the episode (sadly...it would have been cool if that was where it came from).

They should totally cover the song though.

That's great...but the Stones took their name from the Muddy Waters song.

The artist himself brought politics and theology into the equation when he said "He must be killed. The Qur'an makes it clear - if someone defames the prophet, then he must die." Sorry, but if you want to kill people for writing a book you don't like...you're nobody to me. Please Bill, don't play this guy's music anymore.
|
Cat Stevens - On The Road To Find Out (Dec 12, 2009 - 11:46) | I boycott this. Haven't listened to Stevens since he supported the fatwa against Salmon Rushde. I'll turn it back on when the song is over.

I don't like Mellonball either. I had to suffer through a set of his this summer (he was playing with Dylan & Willie Nelson). Blecch. I wouldn't throw anything at him though. And I gotta admit, this song ain't bad.
|
The Band - This Wheel's On Fire (Dec 11, 2009 - 10:47) | I was listening to a Danko club show last night. I miss him something fierce. He used to play a lot of club shows around here when I first moved to Albany and I got to meet him a few times. Very nice, sunny guy, you know. Just loved to play live...and I loved hearing him play live. I just miss him...a lot.

Radiohead - These Are My Twisted Words (Nov 13, 2009 - 00:20) | It's been said Radiohead is an acquired taste...but it's deeper than that for me. The individual songs and albums always take a few listens to sink in for me. I'm a huge fan of this band but there's always a lag from when I hear new material and when I start digging it. Once I get it, then I'm totally hooked. I haven't sussed this song out yet, but gimme a couple weeks. I'm still working on In Rainbows...Bodysnatchers is such a great great song.

Los Incas - El Cóndor Pasa (Oct 21, 2009 - 07:05) | Very strange coincidence. My buddy Pat was over just last night playing Madden w/me. We were listening to music as we played and talking about Paul Simon for some reason. He said he thought someone should cover El Condor Pasa. What are the odds?

Johnny Cash - Hurt (Sep 02, 2009 - 07:49) | I read somewhere Rubin wanted Johnny to cover Radiohead's Creep for this album, but Johnny balked (didn't want to use the F word, I guess). You can imagine what it would have sounded like, "I'm a creep....I'm a weirdo..."

Can someone who was there explain it to someone that wasn't?
I wasn't there. But the Angels started showing up to Kesey's parties in La Honda. From a summary of The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test...
"In the summer of 1965, the Pranksters decide to invite the Hell's Angels, a notorious gang, to join them for a party in La Honda. Wolfe explains how Kesey met one of the leaders of the Angels through Hunter Thompson, a writer and journalist who was doing a story on the Pranksters for a national magazine. Kesey immediately hits it off with the Angels, and they all plan for a big party at Kesey's place. The Angles come roaring into La Honda on their motorcycles and are greeted by a huge sign welcoming them. According to Wolfe, the Pranksters and the Angels have a lot in common because they are all outlaws, and "the Angels had done it like the Pranksters, by choice. They had become outlaws first - to explore...and then got busted for it."
The Pranksters have their entire setup going: speakers and stereos are blasting from the trees, everything is painted in Day-Glo, and all of the Pranksters are decked out in costumes. When the Angels arrive, they have no idea what to expect, and are prepared for a fight. But when the Pranksters give the Angels LSD, they begin to have "the most wondrous experience." Sandy begins making up songs for the Angels and singing them loudly through the giant stereo that is set up, songs that go "Oh, but it's great to be an Angel, / And be dirty all the time!" It's a song that normally would offend the Angels to the point of fighting, but the craziness of it all - including Allen Ginsburg dancing and chanting the Hare Krishna - stupefies the Angels, and they simply take it all in and go with the flow. The cops stand at a distance and watch the party unfold, but except for public nudity, the Pranksters aren't breaking any laws they can see, so they can't arrest anyone. The figure the best policy is simply containment." There's a lot of history there from very early. Been my experience that Angels & bikers in general are great to party with. Treat 'em with respect. I often saw bikers at shows and never saw bad behavior. The Hells Angels motto is "When we do right, no one remembers. When we do wrong, no one forgets"
Oh...and the Dead were never light-weights. They blew my freakin' doors off.

Grateful Dead - Jack-A-Roe (Aug 27, 2009 - 12:43) | I was thinking of this song just last night. Watching Willie Shakes' Twelfth Night. "If music be the food of love, then play on. Give me excess of it."

Neil Young - A Man Needs a Maid (May 09, 2009 - 22:25) | The production is just dandy. Big and dramatic. But I almost don't notice it cuz I love the lyric and the way Neil sings it so much.

King Crimson - One Time (May 09, 2009 - 22:16) | I dug this album...a lot. Saw the Crim in NYC that tour. Incredible. Not long after that I saw Fripp, Belew, and Levin at Valentines in Albany (some sort of Crim side project...think it was called Project X or something). Still can't believe I got to hear Robert Fripp in that tiny club!

Los Lobos - Kiko and the Lavender Moon (Feb 20, 2009 - 20:24) | I've been a big Los Lobos fan for a long time. Seen 'em live a bunch of times thu the years. Two summers ago I was really excited to see them at the Gathering of the Vibes fest with my family. My kids were gonna get to see this amazing band live for the first time! (They knew Kiko from Sesame Street...Elmo & The Lavender Moon.) At the show I was taking my girls, one at a time, to the front so they could see them up close. I found a nice spot up front behind a taper and put my 9 year old up on my shoulders. During Kiko, before I could stop it, Shannon leans her head into the taper's mike and starts saying "Hellloooooooo!...Hellooooooo!"

Euphoria - Blue (Feb 15, 2009 - 10:07) | This is a nice song. The production is a little too busy...too much going on. I'd like it more if it were a simpler arrangement.

The Kinks - I'm Not Like Everybody Else (Live) (Sep 08, 2008 - 12:32) | Wow that little Pretenders>Pretenders>Kinks run was nice. Chrissie & Ray were a couple (had a child together). Á stjörnuhraða Inni í hjarta springur, flugvélarbrak Oní jörðu syngur Ég óska mér og loka nú augunum Já gerðu það, lágfara dans Allt gleymist í smásmá stund og rætist samt Opna augun Ó nei
Minn besti vinur hverju sem dynur Ég kyngi tári og anda hári Illum látum, í faðmi grátum Þegar að við hittumst Þegar að við kyssumst Varirnar brenndu, höldumst í hendur Ég sé þig vakinn Ég sé þig nakinn Inní mér syngur vitleysingur Alltaf þið vaða, við hlaupum hraðar Allt verður smærra Ég öskra hærra Er er við aða, í burtu fara
Minn besti vinur hverju sem dynur Illum látum, í faðmi grátum Ég kyngi tári og anda hári Þegar að við hittumst Þegar að við kyssumst Varirnar brenndu, höldumst í hendur Ég sé þig vakinn Ég sé þig nakinn Inní mér syngur vitleysingur
Here's a translation of the lyrics. Pretty cool.
Inside me a lunatic sings On a silver river You illuminate the whole world and blue eyes Cut the starry sky I make a wish and close my eyes Yes do that, now begins the story Oh no
At lightspeed Inside a heart explodes, an airplane crash Down on the earth sings I make a wish and close my eyes Yes do that, a silly dance All is forgotten in very little time and yet begins Open eyes Oh no
My best friend no matter whatever happens I swallow tears and breathe hair A bad break, we cry in each other arms When we meet When we kiss The lips burning, we hold hands I see you wake I see you naked Inside me a lunatic sings Always rushing, we run quickly Everything becomes smaller I scream louder I'm with a shell, going away
My best friend no matter whatever happens A bad break, we cry in each others arms I swallow tears and breathe hair When we meet When we kiss The lips burning, we hold hands I see you wake I see you naked Inside me a lunatic sings

Joe Cocker - Cry Me a River (Jul 12, 2008 - 10:25) | Grizzly_old_man wrote: When I was a much younger man I knew an equally young woman who though the sun rose and set on this artist.
She found out he was playing in Cedar Rapids Iowa one February day back in the early 70s. Promises were made {that are yet to be fulfilled} if only I would take her to see him. I sold my 66 Mustang notchback sedan to pay for the trip, get the tickets, and a motel room.
As we left beautiful northwest Wisconsin the weather started to worsen. By the time we got to Cedar Rapids it was a full fledged blizzard. I thought for sure the show would be cancelled. It was not. We went into the nearly empty civic center and listened to what ever local band they had open. They sucked. Eventually after the local talent had miserably played everything in their repertory Joe was helped to the stage.
You could tell he was under the influence of something. His band on stage all looked pretty well disgusted and for good reason.
He started out with She came in through the bathroom window made it part way through lost where he was started again then threw up and passed out in his own vomit right there in the middle of the stage.
His band left him there. There were many Boos. Some from his band.
Eventually someone helped him off stage.
The management came out and said there would be no refunds.
The local band came out again and started to play the same stuff they had already done and everyone left.
We got to our room and my date was very disappointed so naturally she decided to drink all the beer and booze we brought along. There were some other mind altering substances in her purse so she consumed them too.
After she passed out it wasnt much fun anymore so I just went to sleep in the other bed and left her alone. She would not have noticed or enjoyed my affections anyway.
It was well afternoon before she could do anything but mimic her idols most recent stage performance.
Eventually the motel manager called and told us that we either had to leave or pay for another day. I had to work the next day so we left.
Ever travel with a woman who has to stop and puke on every stop sign and telephone pole on a 300 mile trip?
Not a real good time.
I despise the man to this day.
Whenever I hear one of his 'songs' all I can think of is him blowing lunch all over the stage.
What a great story! Rock & Roll!

Leo Kottke & Mike Gordon - Living In The Country (Jul 11, 2008 - 01:42) | October 2004
Kottke/Gordon Burlington Higher Ground...
Had to go. Jumped in the car and went. Solo trip (companion bailed) just went. Really glad I did. Weird thing was, on the way back drove all the way thru Vermont and thru a major blizzard. SNOWED HARD all the way back. Harrowing. Made it back in one piece. Bought this disk at the show and listened to it the whole way back (esp Over the Dam). October, and it snowed all night.

The Who - Love, Reign O'er Me (Jun 06, 2008 - 04:26) | I saw the Who in Buffalo back in '81. It was an oppressively hot and humid late summer day. I listened to that just now. I was thinking more bands should try to cover this song. You can almost hear Toots turning the lyrics over in his mind as he sing them. The Radiodread thing didn't work on all the songs of OK Computer. The only two tracks that really worked for me were this and Electioneering with Morgan Heritage. The rub-a-dub Electioneering is even better than Radiohead's version.
