I use "A 5th of Beethoven" by Walter Murphy as a ringtone for my cellphonemessages. In Worldwar II Dutch resistanceradio used the original 5th of Beethoven as the begintune for Radio Oranje (Radio Orange), which was at that time send from England to inform the Dutch and to support them mentally.
And today exactely the same happened! I heard this song live at the Ahoy-stadium in Rotterdam (2001 I think) sung by three ladies: an awsome performance but unfortunately I haven't found that version yet...
Recently I found out that the song I ment was Dirty Work, but nontheless, I don't have the song. Pity!
A long time ago, way before internet, a movie called FM about a radiostation was released. This song was one of the songs played in the movie. My favourite band Steely Dan wrote the titlesong, so my special attention was aroused. Many of the songs were good or great (including this one) and I used to listen to copies of the songs which my elder brother had copied for me on a taperecorder (one with large reels of tape). There was some magic about artists (for me esp. Steely Dan) because they never came to Europe so they seemed to only exist in my imagination. Nowadays the world is so much smaller and the magic has gone. Such a pity.
help, I accidently rated this song an 1, but I didn't want to rate this song at all: I don't know it well enough to rate. But it's worth absolutely far more than 1, lets say: 6, maybe rising to 7 or 8.
Apart from how I rate this song it's very RP-ish to play Queen (or another artist) after a song from Queen (or another artist) played by another which I like a lot!!
This song goes on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and...
That annoying organ in this song: so repetitively whining and irritating. I've got a CD of Costello's with his best songs ("the best of"?) and I always skip number 3 and 4 (I believe). The rest is good indeed.
Great song! Just recently my daughter (aged 10) asked me whether this song is from Pink Floyd, which, in a way, could be very much so! Turn up the volume !! (Oh, oops, its half pas two in the morning here: excuse me, neighbours !)
AMSTERDAM – Soms zijn er van die concerten waar je bij geweest had moeten zijn. Die van Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers in de HMH was er zo een; voor het eerst in dertig jaar in volle glorie te bewonderen in Nederland.
Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers
Te beginnen met Listen To Her Heart. In hoog tempo volgen diverse hits van het collectief, waaronder I Won’t Back Down, Don’t Come Around Here No More, Here Comes My Girl en Free Fallin’.
Whow!! This music is supposed to "fall over" you, to come down on you if, I say this correctly. Like standing in a church where it is played: Once I was in De Oude Kerk (The Old Church) in Amsterdam and music like this was played while I was standing below the organ: the music fell over me like a waterfall: great!!!
Only heard the last seconds of this song and hear it for the first time. The violin at the end reminds me of a song by George Michael: Cowboys & Angels...
Well, what can I say. It's like her image is too much forced to be convincingly really hers (I hope this is a correct sentence). But I like her looks...
Way too 'Patriotic' for me. Reminds me of a country that displays pride, but in the background, is really just crapping on it's people and the people of the world.
What the "peep" is this?! This brings pictures of standing for Stars and Stripes each morning in class and other chauvinistic behaviour to mind! Please cut this crap!
It's so funny: either you seem to hate this song or you like it a lot. There seems to be no in between. You might say that Gilmour is kind of repeating himself whit this song, but still I like the song!
6:57 am Steely Dan Do It Again Can't Buy A Thrill (1972) 8.1 (...) 1:25 am Steely Dan Rikki Don't Lose That Number Pretzel Logic (1974) 8.4
It's just like buses, you don't see any for ages, and suddenly two turn up on the same day.
And today exactely the same happened! I heard this song live at the Ahoy-stadium in Rotterdam (2001 I think) sung by three ladies: an awsome performance but unfortunately I haven't found that version yet...
Heard this song several times, thought that this song was new (2010, 2011 or so). Like it. Although it is almost 20 years old, it sounds rather modern to me...
Funny how many different opnions there are in common about the music of PF. But I'll say this for ones and for all: this music is classic and eternal whether you like it or not, just as music from Van Beethoven, Mahler etc. is ...
Really??? Would you like it more if he had a sex-change operation???
I like the song regardless of the singers genitalia.
Agree! What seems to be the issue? Who cares: what's important is that one likes the song regardless ones physical features (e.g. voice) or being hetero, gay or whatever!
Maybe I can bear to hear one single song from the SP, but imagine to hear an entire CD with this voice: whow, I wouldn't survive it...!!! So whining, irritating etc.
At this moment, early spring in Western Europe (esp. Netherlands, Belgium, Western Germany, Northern France), temperatures are of summer values. This music completes the summerfeel!!
Ones I mentioned that from the ELO song "can't get it out of my head" I thought it was sung bij JL: coincidence that JL and ELO are played after each other?
Hé, just checking and it turns out to be Sade indeed. I believe I tend to tike this song: sometimes here voice sounds so whining, but here it is appropriate, I think.
There used to be the question whether one was a Beatles-fan or a Stones-fan. I am more a Stones-fan (if I had to choose), but this song is really a good one, as many others from the Beatles.
Nice description, I also hear the Moody Blues in their sound but the King Crimson reference really fits too. These guys were awesome!
I don't know King Crimson, but I checked the playlist to see if they were The Moody Blues: first time I hear this song and it sounds nice, like The Moody Blues. Could it be that they share the same singer?
Once a long tima ago I saw Cab Calloway at the North Sea Jazz Festifal in The Hague and he performed this song as well. Although not really my kind of jazz, it was a must to see Cab.
Hell Freezes Over is a great album. This version of Hotel California is much much better than the studioversion, which is played till boredom. Pretty Maids in a Row is also great as is Wasted Time!!
Bad Dynamics? I think you better look up the word dynamics in the dictionary.
Off-tempo? That's the point.
The list just goes on? The list of the musical terms that you obviously have limited knowledge of.
It's ok to dislike a certain type of music, but don't critique unless you know what you are talking about. The whole idea behind music like this is experimentation. Unfortunately, too many people like nice, clear, linear, beginning-middle-end, types of music. Don't you crave a surprise now and then? I love it when a song goes somewhere I don't expect it to.
Oops! I also wanted to make a critic note about this track, now I don't dare to. I think you certainly have a point. I am absolutely a MD fan and jazz is my thing, but this track: I think I need to get used to it. Only heard it for the first time now, so lets give it a try!
This song, which I just heard for the first time, reminds me of a song of Phoenix (I believe "Too Young"). Well, I think I like it (as I also do Phoenix).
Es gibt ja viele Deutsche Leute hier am RP. Toll Nachbarn zu entgegnen! (Entschueldigung wenn mein Deutsch ist nicht ganz korrekt).
First time I hear this song and I think I really like the song, allthough I don't know if I would purchase the album. Germany sometime really breeds good songs (as Belgium, France, The Netherlands, Italy, Spain and other non-english speaking countries do). I always thought that songs sounded best if sung in English, but I know better...
I use the version by Walter Murphy as a ringtone voor my sms: in Worldwar II this tune was used by the Dutch Government who were seated (?) in London, that is used for the begintune of Radio Oranje (Radio Orange, orange referring to the Dutch Royal family) when broadcasting.
Maybe in such way that Mark Knopfler played a tune (of which is only used a second or two) on the album "Gaucho" (on "Gaucho" itself, I believe). Reminds me of JJ Cale. That is: the first album resembles JJ Cale quite a lot...
Ones I mentioned that from the ELO song "can't get it out of my head" I thought it was sung bij JL: coincidence that JL and ELO are played after each other?
It's only yesterday I drove my car for a long trip and I played the entire AJA album as well as the GAUCHO album and it was a very relaxed en joyfull ride!!!
Beautiful, but I prefer the version played by pianoplayer Reynbert de Leeuw: so much more feel and emotion put in the performance. Listen to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oLeXqOXfks
Back in, I believe, 2002 I was at the Rotterdam concert of The Dan and this song was sung by three ladies (who also did the backing vocals): really a fantastic version!! It was really a great song, which I hope to find sometime and be able to buy it!!
Back in the early '70's as a little child my elder brothers had a tape of The Beatles (and tapes of other bands). For summerholidays we went to France by car, which had one of the first radio-cassette-players. Unfortunately my brothers forgot the others tapes to take with them, so the entire holiday we only heard The Beatles play. So I thought The Beatles were French and still so many songs of them I associate with that summerholiday. A warm memory, though.
Great! I've used this song for a long time as a ringtone for my cellphone. For me what makes this song special is the remembrance to Pulp Fiction, which is a great great movie.
I'm absolutely no fan of Coldplay, but this version of this song is a big improvement of the original. Only the voice of the leadsinger keeps on annoying me ...
Funny: didn't know this song and thought by hearing it: hey, do I hear Walter Becker singing? The image of de cd-cover reminds me of the cover of SD's "Can't buy a Thrill".
Some of the music behind Corgan's voice is good, but THAT voice. It touches something very primal inside me. A bit like one of my children crying. It becomes imperative for me to work to make it stop. Diaper change? Feed? Lonely? What does Billy need? The solution is usually to turn it off.
Fully agree!! Damn boring and annoying, this song!
Beautiful piece!! But the versions of Reinbert de Leeuw, a Dutch pianoplayer ( http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reinbert_de_Leeuw ) is even more beautiful!! It is slower played, more thoughtful, which makes the music even more intens.
Cool, great, relaxing. Takes me away. Thoughts of a warm sweet relaxing summer's night appear.
Besides, the symbole of SRV is "stolen" from the VOC, the "Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie" (United East-Indian Companion), the first Multinational ever in the world, etablished 400 years ago: check out http://voc-kenniscentrum.nl/ .
Really great version! Esp. the intro and the reaction of the audience, when they recognize which song it is. The original studioversion is good, but maybe overplayed. Annoying init is the abrupt transition (?) at the point just before they sing: "Mirrors on the ceeling, the pink champagne on ice..." etc.
Always have ambivalent feelings about The Cure. I'm not very familiar with their music, but their first album, the one with "a forest" etc, is a very good one. Surprisingly, after all these years they try to still look the same as back in the '80's, which makes the performance in my opinion rather a caricature!
Ah, great addition to the playlist. Excellent song, tasty guitar and check out the cool lyrics:
Can you hear the evil crowd The lies and the laughter I hear my inside The mechanized hum of another world Where no sun is shining No red light flashing Here in this darkness I know what I've done I know all at once who I am
If I was watching a performance, I can totally see your point. (whatever his name is now) is amazing on stage.
Unfortunately for some songs, we can only hear this on radio, and without all that visual distraction, . . .to me at least, it sounds even cheesier than ever. I really hope I never hear it again. I'd watch it though. . . .
(. . . .this is of course, just one listener's opinion)
Agree, but not for the visual part: really can't enjoy Prince's music. Please never play again anything of his!
drums remind me of a song from the first album of The Cure, some parts of the song remind me of Kravits (including the voice) and some of Radiohead: anyone else? Nice song!
That annoying organ in this song: so repetitively whining and irritating. I've got a CD of Costello's with his best songs ("the best of"?) and I always skip number 3 and 4 (I believe). The rest is good indeed.
Since you live under-the-sea-level, maybe you should listen to aqualung instead of this. You might even enjoy this one if you listened to it with your head in the air and your feet on the ground.
Quite a nasty remark! And don't get me wrong: see also my comment of December 18th. I was referring to, for instance, a referee in a tennismatch asking for silence for the players to concentrate, in this case the listeners to fully enjoy the song. Besides: living under sealevel does not necessarily mean living under water! A quick Google could learn that.
Damn, can't stand Coldplay anymore! Boring voice. Their first album started out good but soon got boring. Since than I can't stand the music. Please skip next time!
THE BEST… Beats Mozart, Miles, Marley, Garcia and everyone else!!!
I do not fully agree for Mozart, Miles etc. aren't completely compareble because of different musicstyles or even something completely different. But YES: in their musicstyle (whatever that is) they're the greatest whether you like the music or not. The same goes for Steely Dan!
The Dan are always my "origin and refencepoint" from which I judge other musicians and music.
When I first learned about The Doobies, way back in the 80's, I thought Michael was black: such a warm and soulful voice he has! The illusion and the magic, though, were somewhat shattered when I saw/heard Donald and Walter playing back and forth the part of the track with the voice of Michael in the song Peg ("Peg, it will come back to you") on You Tube. A pity, in a way: now, when I hear "Peg", I have to ignore what I saw and heard on You Tube. Knowing how a song is "made" in the studio can be rather disillusive...
