Equation - Kissing Crime (May 29, 2011 - 12:33) | fiddlechick wrote: Gonna chime in and say I love the fiddle. But I'm a little biased that way.
It's Seth Lakeman on fiddle, who's a rather well-renowned English fiddle player, where I'm concerned

Agnes Obel - Riverside (May 27, 2011 - 17:01) | I heard this song come on and gasped in recognition. I checked and conclude I must bump it up to a 9 for its light folk vibe
|
New Model Army - Vagabonds (May 25, 2011 - 09:07) | I know little of New Model Army, except that they are musical cousins of my favourite band, the Levellers...
Not surprised I like them!
|
Jethro Tull - Wond'ring Aloud (May 24, 2011 - 12:54) | I can't remember which one, but a Jethro Tull track was playing in a pub (Nice, old-fashioned place with proper timbers and snug little rooms) while on holiday with my dad. We asked the barman what the radio station was.
He told us all about Radio Paradise. Been listening ever since

Muse - Map of the Problematique (May 24, 2011 - 12:32) | Ntropy wrote: Why so many naysayers? I like Muse!
Because, looking at the ratings distribution, the "yaysayers" keep their traps shut and just listen. I mean, there's clearly more of them

Bob Marley - Redemption Song (May 23, 2011 - 13:12) | tphord wrote:just don't get the fascination with Marley ...
He sings openly of social injustice in his own unique style. Nothing more to it

Carbon Leaf - American Tale (May 21, 2011 - 13:39) | fredriley wrote: "celtic"? I listen to an awful lot of modern "celtic" music and can hear no trace of the Celt in this one.
The misconception comes about because people are unable to comprehend the possibility that there can be folk music other than "celtic" (by which they mean irish)
Every country in Western Europe has its own folk tradition, related to the others one way or another.
This sort of bluegrass/folk-rock is influenced by the Scottish & English traditions, as well as of course, Irish.
English =/= Celtic

The Levellers - Too Real (May 21, 2011 - 10:12) | mrandrew wrote: Sweet... but that voice... I cant place it but it is so clear! Richard Barone?
I think you're mistaken. 'Tis Mark Chadwick
EDIT: Although on inspection, he's not entirely dissimilar, but the Levellers' lead vocalist is Mark Chadwick. It would be quite odd for a band based in Brighton, England to include a singer from Florida

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Breakdown (Live) (May 21, 2011 - 09:08) | 1wolfy wrote: I really like the Hit the Road Jack segue
Gotta love it. This song's only 2-3 minutes on the studio version. I'm glad that live they find loads of way to make it last and enjoyed longer

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Breakdown (Live) (May 20, 2011 - 10:00) | You know, I was listening to this thinking "do I know this song? It's the one that goes doo-doo-doo-doo" Then it did this guitar thing and I convinced myself it WASN'T that song... And then it did the "doo-doo" and I nearly screamed "It's Breakdown!"
Awesome song

Tom Petty - Wildflowers (May 20, 2011 - 04:19) | Beautiful, but I can't help hearing in my head "The Ballad of Robbie Jones" by The Levellers, if anyone knows it. Probably the same chord used.
But I loved this song before Tom even started singing. Just amazing

The Levellers!
I actually gasped. Loudly. And shuddered. Ta for putting this on!
|
Phoenix - Rome (Nov 07, 2010 - 07:23) | Strange trend in the ratings, this one...
|
Pink Floyd - Have A Cigar (Nov 02, 2010 - 13:39) | bachbeet wrote: Love all the riffing. And that "fade" ending was exactly the right touch.
It fades because the Wish You Were Here album has only the 5 tracks, and they all pretty much fade into eachother. This one fades out and then the first notes of Wish You Were Here start

Low Strung - Fix You (Nov 01, 2010 - 09:32) | Haters will be haters. I, however don't have irrational hatred for Coldplay and this is frankly a nice song

Altan Urag - Ljii Mongol (Oct 30, 2010 - 17:31) | randerse10 wrote: I gave it a 10 just because of all you people who gave it a 1.
Agreed. It deserves a much higher rating

Porcupine Tree - My Ashes (Oct 30, 2010 - 16:49) | horstman wrote: If you like metal, then you have probably heard of Opeth, of Sweden. Steven Wilson (lead singer of Porcupine Tree) has produced two of Opeth albums, played keyboards on one of their albums and is very good friends with the band. He also speaks highly of Katatonia and Orphaned Land, two very influential metal bands. Seen all these bands except Opeth (sigh) and they all are very good in concert.
Welcome to RP, land of musical expansion!!!
Metal and Progressive Rock are oddly connected. I suppose it's because of the experimentation and good musicianship. Both genres push boundaries and frankly show off

Neko Case - Things That Scare Me (Oct 30, 2010 - 16:08) | Foot wrote: OK tune but clearly rips Quicksilver's "Shady Grove," a far superior song.
Shady Grove ripped off the English folk tune Matty Groves so all is well
|
J.S. Bach - Toccata in D minor (Oct 29, 2010 - 16:22) | Bill suddenly decided the theme of "good" is more important than the theme of "Halloween", while still having haunting themes?
Cool

Richard Thompson - Crawl Back (Under My Stone) (Oct 28, 2010 - 14:24) | zenhead wrote: I wish he would do a "shut up and play your guitar" album, he such an amazing guitarist.
Well he's also an amazing songwriter also. It'd be a shame to rob listeners of that. Persuasion, Farewell Farewell and Beeswing are some of the best songs I know. —- I've never actually heard the original version of this song. More familiar with the live version, which I feel is quite a bit better
|
Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms (Oct 27, 2010 - 11:29) | Bill: "Music here from Dire Straits" "Oh, good " *music starts* "What the hell is this?" *I recognise it* "OMG Brothers In Arms! 10!!!!" Sorry, RP. Stopped listening to you in order to listen to this song over and over on my pc.

Scottish? They're from Brighton, England.
They're folk/punk... It's just people think there is no English folk and automatically attribute it to Scotland or Ireland
|
Pink Floyd - Time (Oct 26, 2010 - 06:41) | Pink Floyd! I love it when RP plays Pink Floyd. Great that it's fairly often too. Amuses me how there are actually people who could give this a 1
|
Matthew Ryan - Dulce Et Decorum Est (Oct 26, 2010 - 05:50) | Well initially I didn't think I liked it. Then I noticed I was tapping my foot and smiling, while intrigued by the lyrics. Suppose I must like it, then

Request: Focus - Hocus Pocus
It's frankly amazing and it apparently hasn't been played in years, which is a shame, since it's a perfect example of the awesomeness of Progressive Rock
Play please
Reply: A grievous lapse in judgment that is. Coming right up. -bg Ta Bill!
