i also called it academic, older than dirt and wholly irrelevant in a post modern world. the cheesy part was all that bothered you, ..boober?

Better examples of this era, very generic copy-cat stuff. Terrible lyrics.

I remember seeing them at Fillmore. I used to be friends with Patti Santos in high school (yes, in the '60s). Was sad to find out recenetly that she died in a car accident in Northern California several years ago.  But I do like this song a lot - brings me back everytime....

It's great how music affects us.  This always takes me back to being 15 years old and so totally mesmerized by this beautiful song.  I got the album from my worldly and wise college-student sister.  What a great memory!  Play it again soon, Bill!

Given that it was the late 60's when this came out it was considered totally in the Haight-Ashbury vein.  Woodstock hadn't happened yet and groups like IABD, the early Grateful Dead and Quicksilver Messenger Service (to name only 3 out of many) were on the cutting edge of the time for "mellow head music".  It's always easy to look back and hold our nose at something made before we were born and that we can't understand because we think that today we're more "sophisticated".

Whatever.  I was there at the time and remember sitting in the audience after the vinyl of this came out and it was, and remains, a great experience.

Some songs just sound like a parody of themselves, or a band. This one sounds like a parody of the 60's. Not like it represents the time, but as if it is actually calling out some of the strange and silly approaches being tried out in the new rock music of the time. It only has seconds left to play and yet I am STILL tempted to hit the PSD button.

I can remember sitting on the floor in the radion station where the DJ was playing this song over the air, on vinyl. He had it turned up loud, was smoking a joint, and we were all just silent, listening.  It was the first time I'd ever heard David LaFlamme or IABD.  And then, the DJ played "Fog On The Tyne" by Lindesfarne.

Was enjoying Squirrel Nut Zipper's "Blue Angel," and the violin-laced swing brought to mind Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks, with violin played by Sid Page, who had replaced David LaFlamme, who went on to do...this.

W-A-Y too much overthinking going on here.  Taken in it's context of the mysticism and hope for the future of the "flower" generation, this song was an anthem to be free of the shackles of oppression of the times,...the white bird flies free.  Still a 9 for me.
