BTW not my fav Tori song, but still very good.

It's been covered interestingly by Voltaire, a Cuban-American glam-goth artist: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RrPtKE8Xzk

Shouldn't take long. She's already clocked 19 years. That's better than the Beatles were able to do.

For shame!   What the Beatles accomplished in 7 years she couldn't do in a 100.

I'm kinda agreeing here.  My personal dislike for most Tori material aside, she does have a very good voice and is quite the poet with her lyrics. I can understand the appeal, even if it doesn't appeal to me.

That being said, Tori doesn't have the talent of the Beatles.  Plus, there were 3 exceptional (and one pretty darn good) people in the Beatles that had to resolve personal, ego, and financial issues in order to stay together as a group.  As it worked out, the personal and the ego issues were too much and the group had to go their separate ways.

If you consider all the success in the solo careers that the individual members of the Beatles have had, each one would be at least as successful if not much more so than Tori.  Take away Lennon's assination and George Harrison's early death, and both of them would still be as relevant in today's music as Paul is now.  Ringo...  well...  aside from an interesting style of playing, I don't see that he contributed much.  I'm no Beatles historian, but from my personal exposure to the group, I don't really feel like he brought much to the table.

Yes, I particularly like that line she drops in about "pretty hate machine" — referencing Trent Reznor (title of his album, probably about her) and the tumultuous relationship she had with him.  Artistic outlet for bad break-up angst!

As for comparisons to Tori's other albums, I would like to defend Boys for Pele.  Although I find Under the Pink haunting, thematically purer, and just a very strong work, Boys for Pele represents Tori's diversity much better.  She gets to be playfully serious, seriously playful, full of joy in one song and sorrow in the next.  "Not the Red Baron" gives me chills even now.  Mr. Zebra still makes me laugh.  I think Pele marks a watershed moment for Tori, where she got to make the kind of album she wanted without so much studio input.

"Little Earthquakes" was cloaked with newness— here was a star being showcased for the first time.  But it was also cloaked with some amateurness, a newbie's over-earnestness.  Refreshing, to be sure, but at times trying too hard.

"Under the Pink" had a lot of stripped down songs, with the studio-inserted string sequences adding some extra substance at times, but at other times distracting from the piano.  Mostly, though, here was Tori and a piano—what a pairing!  Listening to Under the Pink, I often feel like I am in a giant, empty warehouse, and all I can hear is Tori and a piano somewhere unseen at the other end of the building.  This was a mature and beautiful album.

"Boys for Pele" came along, and Tori was showing off.  She used a harpsichord and other old-fashioned instruments.  She sang about whatever she wants and made 180 degree turns from one song to the next.  She had 4 minute ballads and 30 seconds improv pieces.  She was having fun, and I was, too.  She was experimenting freely, which marks an artist now in full control.  And I would say she accomplished a rare trifecta— three strong studio albums to start out a career.  (we ignore her true "first album", of course).

After Pele, Tori wandered for a while.  She tried to make her works more "rock", and that never really succeeded.  "Scarlet's Walk" marked a nice return to form, though, and I would say since then she has been consistent.  Of course not as raw and powerful as she was.

Not her best work. She's better on "Under the Pink," "Scarlett's Walk," "The Beekeeper," and of course - "Little Earthquakes." "Boys for Pele" and "From the Choirgirl Hotel" are lame and just - I dunno - not comparable.

RP listeners seem to either love or hate Tori. I lean towards the latter camp. Can anyone point me to some of music that isn't so breathy, swoopy and deliberately off beat?

I think I could go for her style, but her stuff just seems so forced and attention-seeking. "Look at me! I'm distressed and moody!"

The Swiss have a saying: To each little animal, his own little pleasures. Somehow that seems fitting when I think of Tori Amos.
