![]() August and Everything After (1993) [ larger cover art ] |
Start tearing the old man down,
Run past the heather and down to the old road,
Start turning the grain into the ground,
Roll a new leaf over, in the middle of the night,
There's an old man treading around in the gathered rain,
Well mister, if you're going to walk on water,
Oh could you drop a line my way?
Omaha, somewhere in middle America,
Get right to the heart of matters,
It's the heart that matters more,
I think you better turn your ticket in,
And get your money back at the door, oh.
Start threading a needle,
Brush past the shuttle that slides through the cold room,
Start turning the wool across the wire,
Roll a new life over, in the middle of the night,
there's an old man threading his toes through a bucket of rain,
Hey mister, you don't want to walk on water,
'Cause you're only going to walk all over me.
Omaha, somewhere in middle America,
Get right to the heart of matters,
It's the heart that matters more,
I think you better turn your ticket in,
And get your money back at the door.
Start running the banner down,
Drop past the color come up through the summer rain,
Start turning the girl into the ground,
Roll a new love over, in the middle of the day,
There's a young man rolling around in the earth and rain,
Hey mister, if you're going to walk on water,
You know you're only going to walk all over me.
Omaha, somewhere in middle America,
Get right to the heart of matters,
It's the heart that matters more,
I think you better turn your ticket in,
And get your money back at the door.
Omaha, oh somewhere in middle America,
Get right to the heart of matters, oh,
It's the heart that matters more,
I think you better turn your ticket in,
And get your money back at the door,
Oh, said Omaha, Sunday morning,
I'm coming home today.

Music, my friend, is a miracle, and those who make it are artists of the highest order. I happen to like Counting Crows, and I happen to love this album, but even if I didn't, I'd be hard pressed to muster the emotional energy to actually hate them. Life's too short. | Synth80s (*Beautiful* Southern California (cough, choke, honk)) | Posted: May 19, 2011 - 23:22 I'm very open minded when it comes to music and I can find something to like about almost every band or song, but Counting Crows does nothing for me. It's not overtly painful for me to listen to like, say, Natalie Merchant, but I would generally prefer silence over Counting Crows.

At least no one's tried to upload (or, thankfully, if they did, it was rejected) "D.O.A." by Bloodrock. THAT piece of morbid shock-rock used to give me nightmares. I listened to it once for the first time, and ever after that, when I heard the first four bars of it, I'd vault to the radio, risking life and limb, to turn it off. Got a broken toe one time (my ONLY broken bone - I tripped over the vacuum cleaner cord and landed terribly wrong, but still managed to hit the "off" button before those cute little white sparkles of pain shifted my focus to the damage to my foot.) Guess I should give a shout-out to Bloodrock for breaking my "bones-perfectly-intact" record, literally. F*ckers. And this has absolutely nothing to do with Counting Crows, except that I never risk life and limb to turn off a Counting Crows song. Gee - maybe I've mellowed with age. ![]()

| Cynaera (South of Neanderthal) | Posted: Jun 05, 2010 - 21:23 I know what's-his-name can't sing. I don't care. I sorta love the lyrics, and the music, and oh, hell - I don't isolate one factor of a song - I just take the whole thing and what it does to me. I guess I'm not so insular. If the music makes me dance, I dance. If the lyrics make me laugh, I laugh. If I don't understand them, I dance anyway. And if the lyrics are so banal ("moon," "June," "tune,"...) that the cynic in me has to rise up and be snarky, so be it. Counting Crows doesn't elicit the snarky dragon in me. They inspire me (in spite of the negativity other people experience when listening to them.) And I love this song. | |||||

I know there are people who just don't like these guys... I can actually understand it, because I can't find my way to like any Pearl Jam/Vedder songs.
