You say you want diamonds on a ring of gold
You say you want your story to remain untold.
But all the promises we make
From the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you.
You say you'll give me a highway with no-one on it
Treasure just to look upon it
All the riches in the night.
You say you'll give me eyes in a moon of blindness
A river in a time of dryness
A harbour in the tempest.
But all the promises we make, from the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you.
You say you want your love to work out right
To last with me through the night.
You say you want diamonds on a ring of gold
Your story to remain untold
Your love not to grow cold.
All the promises we break, from the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you.
You...all I want is...
You...all I want is...
You...all I want is...
You...

| bachbeet | Posted: Aug 26, 2012 - 22:40 I agree with some here that their 80s music was superior. I still like some of their 90s music too. Just not quite as much as, say, Unforgettable Fire or Joshua Tree. This song is also not up to those two albums (nor is this album) but it's still quite good. |

I loved their music, including this song, back "in the day" and even up until quite recently. I introduced my sons to their vast body of work as they grew up. But the band and I have broken up — I just don't feel the magic anymore. I don't know what happened. Maybe absence would have made the heart grow fonder — in the 2000's they were just EVERYWHERE. I felt much of what they did was manipulative, media focused, mass produced: their music, public personas and political pursuits. The magic is gone. In contrast, I can still get warm and fuzzy when I hear REM. What do you think? I have to reluctantly agree. You got it right about that elusive, indefinable "magic" factor. Hard to say why, maybe just overexposure as you have suggested, but even their classic songs just sound kinda tired and lifeless to me these days (with a handful of exceptions of course). |

Suppose a political genius, like Bill Clinton, tried late in his career to become a hip rocker. It would be a very bad joke of course. This is what U2 has become, a bad joke. Bono is a musician-cum-global-politician that fashions himself as the world's conscience. He should have focused on his music, which clearly suffered as a result. I don’t think they could have still been the 80s band they were in 2000, but they could have at least pumped out some good music. I like their music in the 90s though. |

| dwlangham (Nowhere to be found) | Posted: Jul 26, 2012 - 12:43 Perhaps the best thing from "Rattle", in my opinion. It's one of those songs that reminds me where I was back when. It stands up well, I think. |

I decided to stop buying their music becuase it was so bad. Recently, I have changed my mind and I even bought Monster again (paid 1 cent, it still sucks). I bought everything up till they "retired" last year. Their later work was not as good as their 80s work, but still some really great songs. U2 is very much the same, except they really do stink in the 2000s. I cannot listen to their later work. It's just not that good. I'll check it out closer maybe. I can't stand Bono though. |
