Great song - but think Lulu did a much better version than Nirvana in fact everything Lulu has done is better than Nirvana!

A first-time hear for me. Had no idea that they covered this tune. Marvy to hear immediately after Lady Grinning Soul. Not altogether different than the original, but still quite worthwhile. Thanks.

They're both great.   Bowie's version is preferred only because of the chanting on the coda.   So otherworldly....

I always liked this version better than Bowie's. Cobain really puts himself into it. I think he really connected to the song on a personal level.

I prefer this version to the Bowie's. The instruments are basically the same, but the singing is more to my liking.

Another for the rare list where I prefer the cover - as much as I love this album and loved Nirvana I think all the best songs on it were the covers like this, where did you sleep last night and jesus don't want me for a sunbeam.

You have to consider the fanbase for Nirvana at the time.  Bowie was light years away from the kind of music that the vast majority of Nirvana's fans would ever listen to.  If not for that, I wouldn't have known when I first heard this song.  It was nearly 6 years after hearing this that I first heard the original by Bowie and I frankly hated it.

Of course, in the ensuing decade and a half or so, my tastes have expanded greatly and I've discovered hundreds of artists and songs that I would have likely turned my nose up at when I was a teenager.  Maybe it's maturing as a person, or maybe it's just the natural evolution of musical taste, but I suppose that happens to most folks.

Please keep in mind that people with a range in musical taste as your average RP listener is rare.  Just think of the question that vexes me every time someone asks me...

He did a bunch of covers on this album that I think were each much better than the originals, an unusual feat  He covered The Vaselines, David Bowie, Meat Puppets and Lead Belly, and improved all of their songs IMHO.  Especially the Meat Puppets, I never really had much interest in Plateau until I heard Cobain do it.

I think that Cobain was maturing as a musician and was adopting more sophisticated songwriting and instrumentals, it is a real pity that he could not keep himself together and stick around so we could hear what other music he would have produced.  He was f'ed up personally but had a lot of talent.

I think this album was released after Cobain was actually dead.

lemmoth, I punched up the playlist to moan about "How can you play this most inferior version ...", but stopped to read your comment first.

Perhaps I should re-evaluate Nirvana, as I never have given them an honest, patient listen.  (Was too busy worrying about my boys and their depressing Smashing Pumpkins CDs.)
