Oooooh, I get it. They live in east Berlin and their love is doomed but if only they could escape over the wall they would be heroes - the wall could be literal of metaphorical in the sense that relationships that fail do so because of the walls we put up, etc.

She's still alive.  There was an article in a Berlin paper about her dated January 28, 2011.  She's still having drug problems, and has been in and out of treatment programs, but she's still alive.

Call me a square if you like, but that movie put me off drugs up to when I was 21 years old...been a sporadic user since (lucky I can indulge without losing the plot errrr sometimes), but yes, for me the film also evokes Bowie and vice-versa.
