She doesn't have the generic/universal appeal necessary for "widespread fame", which is a lot of what I like about her music.  Just look at the derogatory remarks written in the song comment threads of her songs here, and you can see that her music is "not for everyone".

Oh, gosh, the list of excellent bands who never quite made it - XTC comes to mind - is long and sad.

 Orton was one of the artists I first heard on RP and probably would have never heard her work otherwise, one of the reasons I switched my radio support from NPR to RP.
