'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life
Trying to make ends meet, you're a slave to the money, then you die
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places where all the veins meet, yeah
No change, I can change, I can change, I can change
But I'm here in my mould, I am here in my mould
But I'm a million different people from one day to the next
I can't change my mould, no, no, no, no, no
Well, I've never prayed but tonight I'm on my knees, yeah
I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me, yeah
I let the melody shine, let it cleanse my mind, I feel free now
But the airwaves are clean and there's nobody singing to me now
No change, I can change, I can change, I can change
But I'm here in my mould, I am here in my mould
And I'm a million different people from one day to the next
I can't change my mould, no, no, no, no, no
Have you ever been down?
I can't change it you know, I can't change it
'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life
Trying to make ends meet, trying to find some money, then you die
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places where all the veins meet, yeah
You know I can change, I can change, I can change, I can change
But I'm here in my mould, I am here in my mould
And I'm a million different people from one day to the next
I can't change my mould, no, no, no, no, no
I can't change my mould, no, no, no, no, no
I can't change my mould, no, no, no, no, no
You've got to change my mould, no, no, no
(It's just sex and violence, melody and silence)
(Gotta, can't change my violence, melody and silence)
(Gotta, can't change my violence, melody and silence)
(I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down)
(Gotta, can't change my violence, melody and silence)
(I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down)
(Gotta, can't change my violence, melody and silence)
(Been down)
(Ever been down)
(Can't change my violence, melody and silence)
(Ever been down)
(Ever been down)
(Ever been down)
(Have you ever been down?)
(Have you ever been down?)
(Have you ever been down?)
(Have you ever been down?)
(Have you ever been down?)

Klein, who pretty much owns the rights to all Stones' material written before 1971. The Verve does receive sales and recording income for this song, just not any royalties as composers. "After 'Bittersweet Symphony' became a hit single, the group was sued by former Stones manager Allen Klein (who owns the copyrights to the band’s pre-1970 songs...). He claimed the Verve broke the agreement when they supposedly used a larger portion than was covered in the license..." |

| phlattop | Posted: Mar 08, 2013 - 09:52 I read somewhere that they approached Mick and Keith about the songwriting credit when they got nowhere with the Stones' lawyers. Mick and Keith's hands were tied so they abided by the law. rdo wrote: I disagree. If I were on the jury, I would have sided against the Verve too. They just need to get permission, that's all it takes. This is a good song, but credit has to be given when and where it is due. |
| mostling | Posted: Mar 08, 2013 - 09:48 excellent transition from Travis 'Sing" to the Verve. These are some of my all time Brit favorites. |

| maryjanne (Brazil) | Posted: Dec 04, 2012 - 09:02 It's insane how the musics on this radio play on a sequence that makes perfect sense together! Its was playing Travis - Sing before this one and 2 seconds after listening to it reminded me of Bitter Sweet Symphony. Who came next??? I love you so much guys! |

I'm not a hater, but I have listened to the album. I agree, good album all the way through, especially "The Drugs Don't Work." I bought the album based on the single, expecting to be disappointed, and was instead pleasantly surprised. |

| NicJohn (Northern Michigan) | Posted: Jun 13, 2012 - 12:11 Why is it that EVERY TIME this song plays it breaks up for a moment? I'm beginning to think that the song file is flawed and it's not my connection. Bill if others agree you should check for a better copy of the song. BTW I like this song a lot. I'll give it a 7! |

There's a reason that no-one ever plays the original - it's a stupid song. The Verve produced a great debut EP (Verve) and follow-up album (A Storm in Heaven). Even the sophomore album (A Northern Soul) is pretty good. It's a crime that we never get to hear the music from them and just get a cover of Rolling Stones pop music. Maybe authentic Verve music is too cacophonous for general consumption. Where's a station that can play it or Spiritualized, My Bloody Valentine, The Cranes or 'In the Presence of Nothing'? The "original", from which the entire, looped, backing-music track of this song comes, is an instrumental cover of a Jagger/Richards composition - "The Last Time (which is far from "stupid"), as recorded by the Andrew Loog Oldham Orchestra - that's probably why no one ever plays it. RP plays more Verve tunes than just this one. |
| Ahnyer_Keester (Chicago Il) | Posted: Jun 01, 2012 - 07:18 why do I like this song? I can't help singing along with it even though it is repetitive. I just like it. |
| misterbearbaby (Marina del Rey, California) | Posted: May 12, 2012 - 17:11 Definitely in the running for New US National Anthem. I wept openly at Coachella when they played this at the reunion a couple years ago. |

You can't get every artist you'd like on one station. I am actually amazed at just how many of my favroite songs and bands pop up here, unexpectedly. Sometimes I think it's just uncanny how it happens. Then again, there is a lot I don't care for. I could do without all the blues and other stuffy tunes. |
