It was only one hour ago
It was all so different then
Nothing yet has really sunk in
Looks like it always did
This flesh and bone
Is just the way that you were tied in
Now there's no one home
I grieve for you
And you leave me
It's so hard to move on
Still loving what's gone
And still life carries on
Carries on and on, and on, and on
The news that truly shocks
Is the empty, empty page
While the final rattle rocks
Its empty, empty cage
And I can't handle this
I grieve for you
And you leave me
Let it out and move on
Missing what's gone
They say life carries on
They say life carries on, and on, and on
Life carries on in the people I meet
In everyone that's out on the street
In all the dogs and cats
In the flies and rats
In the rot and the rust
In the ashes and the dust
Life carries on and on, and on, and on
Life carries on and on, and on
It's just the car that we ride in
A home we reside in
The face that we hide in
The way we are tied in
And life carries on and on, and on, and on
Life carries on and on and on
Did I dream this belief
Or did I believe this dream
Now I can find relief
I grieve

| randyblew (Raleigh, NC) | Posted: May 20, 2013 - 07:20 Nice, though I like other Peter better. His voice does it for me - that keening sound of humanity, a human soul. Despite some of the snarky negativism of some of the reviews, this still ranks a 7.8. Not bad, Peter. Saw him live in LA in 88 - transcendental show. |

| fiddler | Posted: Mar 12, 2013 - 08:42 I dig the Phil Spector wall of sound vibe...it's the way we're all tied in. |
| FlatCat (Chicago) | Posted: Mar 05, 2013 - 15:44 Wow. About as awful as it gets. Horribly depressing lyrics, and screechy grating sounds. |
| mkinnan (Kansas City) | Posted: Mar 05, 2013 - 15:10 Great tune, please don't overplay this one and ruin it. |
| ziakut (Slightly North of Obvlivion) | Posted: Jan 08, 2013 - 16:00 8 to a solid 10! Love this incredible tune. The simplicity of these lyrics grow so deep on so many levels. I notice how the 'grieving' begins in the song as slow and painful. As the tune progresses...it strengthens...much like time heals. Then the drums and percussion come in and the tempo picks up with harmony. As life is moving on and carrying on...and on. Yet we still grieve....just beautiful. |

| S-curvy (Lovely Alameda, the Isle of Style) | Posted: Jul 28, 2012 - 20:27 I so appreciate it when PG goes out and puts words and music to those excruciating things we all go through. Hell no, those things aren't nice or pleasant, but we need the catharsis sometimes, and the voice PG gives really, really works for me. |

Except of coure when they differ from our own. Did you know that in Nazi Germany, Hitler enjoyed his highest support among university students. Even Martin Heigeggar, the greatest Philosopher of the 20th century, adored the Fuhrer. My favorite philosopher was Sarte, who loved Joseph Stalin. Just food for thought. |

| james_of_tucson (Tucson AZ) | Posted: Jul 05, 2011 - 11:05 chudd wrote: @ amoreena: According to wikipedia the source of the song has a less personal and more practical (contrived?) origin than we might think: "I Grieve" was conceived after Gabriel looked over his catalogue of music as if it were a catalogue of emotional tools. He found one major missing tool to be one to cope with death and therefore "I Grieve" was born (first aired in 1998, despite the popular belief that it was written in response to 9/11)." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Up_%28Peter_Gabriel_album%29) Whatever. Still a great song though. I thought he nailed it with "Here comes the supernatural anaesthetist." and "Anyway, they say she rides on a pale horse / but I'm sure I hear a train." |

| ep | Posted: Jun 03, 2011 - 19:51 I know that opinions on this are all over the spectrum (which is good to read!). However, I have to say that this song is one of the few that actually make me stop to listen — the clarity of the tune, the beautiful (and, yes "easy") melody and rhythm, and the touching expression, it all works for me. During a few moments of the song, I can almost claim that it feels "transporting," or something... For me, I just feel oddly connected to the music when I hear it... (Or maybe it's just that I like to sing along to ballads, eh... whatever!) : ) |
