Only 7.9?

This is godlike! - it's right up there with the best of the classics.

Unmelodious?    Can't agree with you when I hear that harpsichord !

Not sure why I haven't given this an EIGHT.   I think it's because I like 'Always The Sun" and "Skin Deep" even more than this classic.

What a great sequence! Suzanne Vega - Caramel, Jethro Tull - Bourse, and now this! Had to stop work and listen.

It might not be about heroin; it could be about pancake syrup. I never frown when I'm eating a nice tall stack of flapjacks covered in golden brown syrup!

This is mesmerizing. I just can't turn it off no matter how disturbed I get because of the fact that it's an ode to heroin.

I just can't help it.

When I hear this song I can't stop myself thinking of "Brown 25" from that hysterical 1974 movie "The Groove Tube"

Gordon Brown

BTW—Hugh Cornwell claims the song was written about heroin and/or a girl, so you don't have to think about drugs when you hear this great song.

Golden Brown was a hit from La Folie album by the Stranglers released in 1981.

This is one of my Desert Island top 10.

One of my favorite radio moments was during a test match at Lords a couple of years ago when Jonathan Agnew discovered Hugh Cornwell in the crowd and persuaded him to give an interview during the lunch interval. At the end he played an acoustic version of this. I was in heaven, The Stranglers and England at Lords on the same day!

For cricket/Stranglers fans, I found a transcript of the interview here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cricket/3133563.stm

And a fan's recording of the performance of Golden Brown here: http://www.music-love.com/index.php?view=display&option=com_videos&id=2838947

For non-cricket fans the guitar apparently belonged to Mike Selvey, and ex-cricketer who was part of the commentary team. I haven't been able to narrow down which match this was. The BBC transcript was posted on 8 Aug 2003, which was after the 2nd test against South Africa.

A clear 10 (if you understand what it's all about) for lyrics and music!

Aside from that I have to say that the STRANGLERS have been the best (!!!)

live-band I have ever seen, though the concert I am refering to happned 20 years ago!

Well, it's not so much "glorifying heroin use" as trying to capture a sort of...erm...sense of the experience. The love of the sensation is quite obviously, unhealthy and unsettling, or it would be a nice steady 4/4 rocker or 3/4 waltz. No, they stuck that extra little bit in every fourth go round and what you have is odd, uncomfortable and decidedly strange. Yet, over it all, this lovely soft, well sung little love song...it makes you want to like it....I think THAT might be the point.... I think it's pure genius.

Ah.... the Stranglers: 1981, The Cellar Door in Georgetown. Small but intense audience. Mere feet away from Hugh Cornwell and Jean-Jacques Burnel spinning their intoxicating web. " We.Are.The.Men in Black."
