I love to lie and lie to love
I'm hangin' on they push and shove
Possession is the motivation
That is hangin' up the goddamn nation
Looks like we always end up in a rut
Everybody now
Tryin' to make it real compared to what
Slaughterhouse is killin' hogs
Twisted children killin' frogs
Poor dumb rednecks rollin' logs
Tired old ladies kissin' dogs
I hate the human love of that stinking mutt
I can't use it
Tryin' to make it real compared to what
President he's got his war
Folks don't know just what it's for
Nobody gives us rhyme or reason
Have one doubt they call it treason
We're chicken feathers
All without one nut goddamn it
Tryin' to make it real compared to what
Church on Sunday sleep and nod
Tryin' to duck the wrath of God
Preachers fillin' us with fright
They all tryin' to teach us what they think is right
They really got to be some kind of nut
I can't use it
Tryin' to make it real compared to what
Where's that bee and where's that honey
Where's my God and where's my money
Unreal values a crass distortion
Unwed mothers need abortion
Kind of brings to mind old young King Tut
He did it now
Tried to make it real compared to what
Tryin' to make it real compared to what
I'm hangin' on they push and shove
Possession is the motivation
That is hangin' up the goddamn nation

Good song, at any rate. Plus ... it's only remotely funny if the song actually has some cowbell. This song doesn't. |

| gypsyman (just passing through....) | Posted: Feb 25, 2013 - 09:53 My college roommate turned me onto this in 1979. (I think) Still impressive, and good to the ear. |
| TwinEngine | Posted: Feb 16, 2013 - 14:37 I first heard this on an Atlantic Records compilation, so I beat RP for once. ;-) As a teenager this collection got me a little interested in jazz, at least. (And to the song comments criticizing jazz as inaccessible, you do realize that you're barking up the wrong tree with this particular song?) I take exception to the line "I hate the human love of that stinking mutt", but at least he's honest. The modern approach would be to condemn this song to the "pre-politically correct era", before people could only talk in bullshit codes and passive voices, because it could possibly offend someone ("rednecks", animal lovers) — so I'm glad it exists. That compilation also had a really nice, melodic, accessible jazz piece called Hard Times by David 'Fathead' Newman (youtube link) that I have not forgotten. I would recommend it for RP if I dared. |

| meinthecorner (Past the gravy, far beyond the golden fries) | Posted: Feb 04, 2012 - 03:31 O.K. I'm dating myself here, (might as well...no one else is! Ha!) but, I saw Les & Eddy do this at the ChessMate in Detroit, Michigan, in the early '70's . One of that town's long-standing jazz clubs, nonetheless a small room and the weather outside was frightful, so we lucked-out with a table literally 5 feet from the band. No stage. We were in our early 20's. Eddy's mic stand was right in front of us. Yikes! He was a multi-instrumentalist and, along with his saxes, he introduced us to this new instrument he was working into their material called a "Guitorgan"! Early synth guitar. Don't know whatever became of it, though. That show opened our young eyes to an amazing world of wonder, and, to think that back then these guys were old to us! Man, those guys had passion! |

For a period during the mid 70s, it was an AM station as hip as any of the popular FM stations (KMEL, KSAN, KTIM and later KFOG). Great DJs: Russ Syracuse, John Gilliland, Terry McGovern, Rick Cimino, Scott Beach and still had the Giants and 49ers. They played anything and everything. Eclectic before it was fashionable. Then some bright eyes hired Don Sherwood back as the program director who promptly turned the music dial to, well, bland: Mitch Miller, Billy Rose, Ray Coniff, Percy Faith—anything that had "and his Orchestra" in it. Sherwood honestly thought that's what the audience wanted. They didn't. The DJs deserted in droves, and the station sank like a stone. Love this story, it sounds sad and true. Same thing happened to me in the Milwaukee "listening area" at this time. By the way this is the greatest example of a song about the truth of life I've ever heard...just sayin' |
