Because they can get so remote from their roots that their material becomes bland and generic. Because major success brings enormous pressures to tailor their output to 'audiences' to increase sales. Because they can become ruled by record corporations looking to blandify the 'product'. No. They mean that the fact that they get a lot of airplay means, to some, that they suck. It's a hardship most good bands live with. I could list a dozen bands with amazing catalogues that are cursed because, for the mere fact that they are good, they are panned by the critics, particularly this bunch of critics. A band that succeeds must be crap or must have sold out, the quality of thier music means little compared to our ability to say they suck.

How can a band be cursed by commercial success?  What other kind of success is there?  Broke, penniless, obscure, sitting-on-a-street-corner-busking success?  Some group performing for their cats, dogs, friends and relatives only?  Is that success? Is there a music scene that I don't know about that has performers who do not want their music to be appreciated, and who do not want to be remunerated?  How do these notions get traction?
