I could never really afford to buy CDs or records until around the time the movie Trainspotting came out.  I was driving a beat up old car with a giant dent in the side, and I could barely make the payments.  What little spending money I had went to whatever social life I was able to scrape together in Wrigleyville, Chicago (great times).  So, I bought the Trainspotting CD, mainly on the strength of this song - they had just started playing this in heavy rotation on XRT.  It was a life-changing CD for me, because Brian Eno's Deep Blue Day is also on that CD...

I don't know, these guys weren't that old when they started their downward slides, all of them could be said to have started losing their touch in the 80's, even Iggy. I don't think it's a matter of getting older so much as a matter of getting comfortable in a niche.

The only thing that happened to each of the trailblazing, amazing, genius (in their own ways) artist that you mentioned is that they and their audiences got older.  Rock and roll, r&b, pop & punk are games for young men and women to remake every generation and thank god for that.
