Lot of other music from Nickel Creek I'd prefer over this....  almost everything from their last album is awesome.

Saw Chris Thile's new band, The Punch Brothers, recently. Very different from Nickel Creek.

so you drop your penny in concerning pawlowian behaviour ...
but take care: It is a short way from Nickel Creek to Nickel Crack and then Nickel Back!

Except that Bela's instrument of choice is the banjo, and Chris Thile's is the mandolin.

I believe to have spotted a fast 7/8 and a fast 9/8, apart from the recurring 'straight' 8/8

Precisely for the reasons you cited.

Alright, maybe not precisely. But pretty damn close. All the cutesy stuff - Bilbo's birthday bash, all the idyllic Shire nonsense, and especially that weirdly merry Tom Bombadil doofus - in LotR is, IMO, irritating. I know it's good to have a bit of contrast to all the darkness and drama, but I don't think Tolkien manages it well that often.

But that's just my opinion ...
