I like lots of SG songs, including this one, but my favorite is "Viorar vel til loftarasa" on Agaetis Byrjun.

I love the way the menacing feedback and rumble melt into one of the most beautiful pieces of piano that I think I have ever heard.

Then the bass kicks in around 2:00 minutes followed by beautiful violins and eventually guitar . . . all building to a fantastic closing crescendo.

It's a post modern symphony.

That is a good comparison — like Pink Floyd, Sigur Ros' album is an epic work better listened to in it's entirety and they are perhaps ahead of their time (will be better appreciated in the future).  Definitely not mainstream, which is one reason I love them!

Not quite: they sing in "Hopelandic" which is not a language, but kind of a stadium of the song, when there are not yet lyrics to the music and the melody. On their older and very new albums, Jonsi is also singing in Icelandic and English.

You may not have noticed that this Album was released in 1997, when the Kings were still in their "Pampers"

I'm with you. This track is growing on me. 6 to 7 this listen, and I could see it getting an 8 with a couple more listens. 1997 release date? I have missed so much! Thank you Bill and Rebecca for the treasure that is Radio Paradise!

And then a great segue to Amanda Palmer....

If everybody can get past the lyrics and just listen to the music.

The song is a solid 8 for me, sure the "lyrics" get annoying at times but it's still a great song.

If it sounds like they are singing nonsense, it's cause they are. It's a made up unintelligible language called Vonlenska.

BTW - the song title is actually Njósnavélin

Iceland used to be part of Denmark (Iceland formally became an independent republic on June 17, 1944) - so you're excused.

Well according to Wikipedia (and I know they are not necessarily the authority) the term "Scandinavian" is fairly loose, depending on who is using it:

Scandinavia<1> is a region in northern Europe that includes Denmark and two of the Scandinavian Peninsula's nations, Norway and Sweden. In common English usage, Finland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Greenland are sometimes also considered part of Scandinavia.<2> The term Nordic countries refers to Denmark, Norway and Sweden as well as Finland and Iceland, and associated territories.
