Well, I was just going to say I like this tune a LOT, and believe the late Ms. Winehouse could've belted 'em out with the best in the 1920s or 1950s if she'd be alive then.

Sorry to interrupt the moral/ethical/religious/conspiracy conversation on this here MUSIC thread.

Yeah, I guess your right, I must be getting prudish in my old age.  Im sure that you would be perfectly willing to use the same phrase in front of your mother, or your children.  Just don't say it in front of my mom, ok? She would probably slap you.

Don't get me wrong though, art should be revolting occasionally, or its not doing its job.  I do NOT think that she shouldn't sing the lyric in question... i just find it revolting.  I also love the song Stinkfist by tool, which is far more revolting than anything Amy came up with.

Why should every piece of music be appropriate for your mother and your children?? Jesus, what a boring world that would be.

Somehow zepher, I don't think anything in "Matthew" had any relevance to Ms. Winehouse, in particular.

What a revolting lyric!  Was that line in the radio version?  Maybe so, since you cant really understand what she is saying most of the time.

Whale oil beef hooked, she really did sing that.

He left no time to regret,  kept his dick wet
With his same old safe bet
Me and my head high and my tears dry
Get on without my guy

Watched American Idol tonight, 10 women - well, mostly girls.  A lot of belters.  One, tho, did "My Funny Valentine", and the song was the star. Amy did not belt out the music; she sang a song. We'll miss what she could've created.

I was never a fan.  I feel terrible for her though.  I don't get it.   I am reading Everybody Loves Our Town: An Oral History of Grunge.   All those great talents who died from drug abuse.   It really sucks.

What made her so great is her very unique style.  With the exception of Billy Holiday, I can't think of any other singer who sings in this difficult style (try to sing like Amy without sounding like an idiot).  That's creative...and that's what music is all about—artistic creativity.
No more criticism for her than any of the other musical greats who died an untimely death.

Tony Bennett and Amy connected when he said she sounded like Dinah Washington (a '50s blues singer) and she said that was her idol. Just another great she followed.

We are all measured by the same yardstick, and we all fall short.  Fortunately, God sent his Son to pay our penalty so the devil doesn't have to get any, if we put our trust in Him.

Is the 1st guy deserving of the respect of anyone, SmackDaddy?

I knew a woman who destroyed herself with addictions.  Her dear departed daddy, whom everyone knew was the sweetest guy you could ever want to know, killed himself when his incest on her was exposed after more years of it than she could remember.  Her loyalty to him, on top of the powerful resistance most people have to hating their parents, made her blame herself and hate herself.

People with that kind of trauma use an enormous amount of mental energy just holding themselves together and warding off the pain.

I know nothing about Amy Winehouse, and can't say if the above applies to her.   I do know that "we're all measured by the same yardstick and devil take the hindmost" thinking is fascist thinking.  The hatreds and resentments of Fascists, who are typically subnormal in intelligence, are easy "tough guy" manifestations of shames and fears they haven't the courage to face.

What she did for her songs is equal to what Tom Jones did for his.  There is just something extra packed into their voices that make the songs uniquely their own.
