Sorry, I like both these guys, but not this cover.  For me, it misses the core of the tune.  A pity.

Dylan is such an amazing songwriter... as long as someone else is doing their interpretation of his song.

Interesting to say the least. Judy Collins did a nice version of this one on the album, Judy sings Dylan.

The only thing wrong with this song is that it's not on the "Iron and Wine" album!

Dark Eyes

Oh, the gentlemen are talking and the midnight moon is on the riverside
They're drinking up and walking and it is time for me to slide
I live in another world where life and death are memorized
Where the earth is strung with lovers' pearls and all I see are dark eyes

A cock is crowing far away and another soldier's deep in prayer
Some mother's child has gone astray, she can't find him anywhere
But I can hear another drum beating for the dead that rise
Whom nature's beast fears as they come and all I see are dark eyes

They tell me to be discreet for all intended purposes,
They tell me revenge is sweet and from where they stand, I'm sure it is.
But I feel nothing for their game where beauty goes unrecognized,
All I feel is heat and flame and all I see are dark eyes.

Oh, the French girl, she's in paradise and a drunken man is at the wheel
Hunger pays a heavy price to the falling gods of speed and steel
Oh, time is short and the days are sweet and passion rules the arrow that flies
A million faces at my feet but all I see are dark eyes

I was amazed to find this is a Dylan song.  It has so much the character of of Iron & Wine's music.  The xylophone in this is very nice, very hypnotic, (unlike the one coming up in Tull's "Skating Away").    {#Headache}

I pretty much completely agree with you. The production on Empire Burlesque is dated and awful, although Bob's lyrics are top-notch. The songs on the album are ripe for covering and I&W and Calexico have done a good job with this one.

Everything about Iron & Wine has me addicted immediately. Add a little Calexico and let the magic begin. 1st time I've heard this and already hoping that it won't end.

Mindbendingly great, this.

Iron & Wine and Calexico should really extend their collaboration to a full album's worth, not just scattershot soundtracks and mini-albums here and there. The sum is so much greater than the individual parts, methinks.

This is a GREAT soundtrack.

If you have the open mind Dylan speaks to in his style, you'll like it. Highly recommended.
