Wow... what memories!!!    The entire album was is amazing.   I remember rushing to the local music store to buy the songbook for piano.   I learned the whole book in under a week and still love playing these fantastic tunes..  Funeral for a Friend being my favorite to play!!!

Rock on Elton and Bernie!!!

As a (hopefully) wiser and more seasoned soul, his early, more folky and honky based stuff appeals the more (think Elton songs played during Almost Famous). Had a fit at 11 when Mom wouldn't let me go see him in Greensboro in 76. One of the greats! We need more piano music out there.

Captain Fantastic was the first album I ever bought. I think I was maybe 12?  Anyway I loved Elton then and I still do.  I saw him in '76 In Chicago.  My mom somehow managed to get my sisters and me tickets.  He is such an incredible musician and puts on a fantastic show.  A few years ago I saw him in San Diego.  He brought the house down - the man still has it goin on!!

I grew up with ELP and Yes as well but I never loved it, that's the difference.

It's funny, one of my fave EJ albums is one hardly anyone ever mentions: Blue Moves. It's not in the same league as 'Goodbye' or 'Honky Chateau', but it has some great stuff too.

The opening songs, 'Funeral' and 'Love Lies' never fail to grab me. I have to listen to this album about once a month. It has a few misses, certainly, but the hits are incredible.

This is from my favorite EJ release; maybe because I have the vinyl records or that I saw/heard him in concert soon after it came out. I like his later works in isolation, but GYBR has more hits for me than any other. :-)

This song tells a story, or describes a situation, more specifically than most BT/EJ songs. Bernie's lyrics are not always linear, or even make much sense (see: Grey Seal), but these lyrics are so spot-on, they exactly describe a scene many of us unfortunately have witnessed first-hand.

The production of EJ's early-ish albums is a high-water mark of the craft. Outstanding.

So much of Elton's 70s output is new to me as I never had time for him when I was a kid in the 80s. Nevertheless, it seems that everything I hear, I like. What a talented team, he and Bernie are.

ahhh.. the 70's...    i remember them well (ok, maybe not so well but i do have flashbacks..lol).     I rushed down to our local music store and bought the Yellow Brick Road songbook for piano and played every song on this album many times over.   My piano playing is a little rusty these days but oh...... how i loved playing this music.

Thanks RP for playing the obscure....

More please!

Said previously ... this is absolutely vintage Elton. Wow. I hope he knows - and Bernie knows - the impact the two of them have had on popular music. This entire album, pure gold. Sure, he went to hell in a hand basket shortly after, but those few albums ... brilliance.
