Gave it a 5.  Lots of familiar elements in there from artists I'm into.  Like the ambitious lyrics.  Maybe giveit a few more listens before I give my final verdict.

FWIW:  this is sonically similar to some Porcupine Tree but otherwise very, very different.  PT's melodies are simple, the arrangements are complex.  Nothing wrong with simple or simpler music.  I love Abba and John Prine. Just saying that Snow Patrol and Porcupine Tree are rather different for those of us who amuse ourselves by comparing one popular rock band to another.

I'll second that. PT are as Rachmaninov to Einaudi, at another level of complexity and feeling, for all that I like Ludovico Einaudi. This song playing after Coldplay's White Shadow makes me realise that Coldplay and Snow Patrol are of a musical kind: cool (in the sense of distant and unemotional), relatively simple, and perhaps a touch corporate. For all that both are good bands, it's difficult for me to get any emotional charge from their works. Maybe it's just me.

..try to dislike now, having the meaning in front of ya..

"Lifeboats"

Hold on, hold on, let me get the words out before I burst
There's no truth at all, poking at the giant eyes of ancient gods
Cool hats have failed, now it's time for me to have my turn
Kiss me, kiss me, life is far too short to scream and shout

Flashed up in my wildest dreams, like red blood streams, stretch out like vast cracked ice
The veins of you, the veins of me, like great forest trees
Pushing through and on and in
Gliding like a satellite in the broken night
And when I wake you're there I'm saved
Your love is life piled tight and high set against the sky
That seems to balance on its own

Sing out sing out the silence only eats us from the inside up
I meant no harm but I only get to say these words too late
Wake up wake up dreaming only leads to more and more nightmares
Snap out of it you said it in a way that showed you really cared.

Send your lifeboats out for me,
Send your lifeboat out

I used to think they were a "lite" band to woo my gf with... and now, having heard and tried to play and sing along... I'm a reluctant big fan, bumped it up to 8. This album is great. So many of their songs are superficially simple... but they are able to blend the lyrics with the hooky music.. better than the average band. Yeah, I hate their cute band name, but I'm a fan, now. Quite slick.
