Ah you beat me to it. Yes, the dream sequences. The first season was quite good. After that it became more and more tiresome as each onion layer revealed a new, more sinister character, but without any rhyme or reason.

What the heck is David Lynch up to these days?

Yep, the name would lead you to expect death metal. I love band names that completely flummox the listener's expectations. Other examples, off the top of my head, include Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Massive Attack.

Good CD to put on for late night/early morning watching rain, fog, or just quiet conversations... Best of their CDs...
Clint Mansell movie sound tracks are good follow on in a similar vein... not the same, similar.

{Re: cover vs. music}

The cover art focuses on the quintessential symbol used by biker thrash metal bands.  A skull, occasionally accompanied by flames, crossbones, motorcycles, daggers, or x-rated Barbie-doll images, conjures up the whole Ozzy sub-genre of music.  C'mon, man, "Der Club of Gore?"  And it's black and silver, too.  I'm seeing mountains of Marshals or Ampegs, double bass drum setup, and guys with stringy hair to their waists.  Flashpots optional.

All quite different from the music.

I understand your point, but that's just one (very modern) interpretation of that symbol - and it's what it conjures for you.  As you know, the symbol of a human skull has been utilized a whole lot longer than heavy metal bands have been around (ie: for thousands of years).  It has commonly been used as a warning sign or something indicating Fear or fearsomeness (constant or temporary), among many other things.  This music is creepy and foreboding (in a good way).  Apparently, they once described their music as an: "unholy ambient mixture of slow jazz ballads, Black Sabbath doom and down tuned Autopsy sounds".
  However, as you said, that jawless fellow could easily find himself adorning the cover of a "thrash-metal-band's" album, but he would have to be accompanied by the scantily-clad, viking woman with an eye-patch, and the other trappings you listed above.  In this instance, "Old Baldy" has taken the minimalist demeanor - accompanied only by his familiar and enduring comrade — Gothic lettering.  I would hate to think that the iconography of a human skull has been subverted to an exclusive connection with thrash/metal music.  People can go a little further back than the 1980s when speculating about symbolism and iconography.

My first hearing of this. Excellent. I can imagine it as a soundtrack to some post-modern sci-fi (or something?). Urban, grey, drizzly rain, driving, lights reflected, neon. Not necessarily gloomy. Like to hear more.

I agree.  It automatically sent my happy mood plummeting, and now I'm stuck in a miasma of dark thoughts.  Not scared, but I think I need to go out into the sunshine and look up for awhile to get this film of depression off of me...
