![]() Spirit Bird (2012) [ larger cover art ] |
Give it time and we wonder why “do what we can laugh and we cry,
and we sleep in your dust because we've seen this all before.”
Culture fades with tears and grace,
leaving us stunned hollow with shame we have seen this all, seen this all before.
Many tribes of a modern kind, doing brand new works, same spirit by side,
joining hearts and hand and ancestral twine,
ancestral twine.
Many tribes of a modern kind, doing brand new works, same spirit by side,
joining hearts and hand and ancestral twine,
ancestral twine.
Slowly it fades.
Slowly we fade.
Slowly it fades.
Slowly we fade.
Spirit bird she creaks and groans she knows she has,
seen this all before she has, seen this all before she has.
Spirit bird she creaks and groans she knows she has,
seen this all before she has, seen this all before she has.
Slowly you fade.
Slowly it fades.
Slowly you fade.
Slowly it fades.
Slowly you fade.
Soldier on,
Soldier on, my good country man.
Keep fighting for your culture, now keep fighting for your land.
I know it’s been thousands of years and I feel your hurt
and I know it’s wrong and you feel you’ve been chained and broken and burned
and those beautiful old people those wise old souls have been ground down for far too long,
by that spineless man that greedy man,
that heartless man,
deceiving man,
government hand taking blood and land,
taking blood and land and still they can,
but your dreaming and your warrior spirit lives on
and it is so so so strong in the earth in the trees, in the rocks, in the water, in your blood,
and in the air we breath.
Soldier on,
Soldier on, my good country man.
Keep fighting for your children now keep fighting for your land.
Slowly you fade.
Slowly it fades.
Slowly you fade.
Slowly you fade.

Still gives me shivers recalling it - the audience swaying and singing along. The first time I heard the man I was walking along the causeway toward Hillside Festival (best music festival in Ontario!!) to that unearthly sound of the didgeridoo shakin the bones. Instant fan. |

| juul (Kingston) | Posted: May 31, 2013 - 13:22 Hey - I just like it - simple - no over analysis required ;-) Have a great weekend everyone - life is short !!!!!! |
| Frater_Kork (Uppsala, Sweden) | Posted: May 16, 2013 - 06:33 This brings forth painful memories of listening to Sami Jojk on 70:s educational TV in primary school. I got nothing against our local aboriginals who's ululations seem to be cosmically attuned to every other pipe smoking dude or dudette in the backwoods of the world. I however, rather prefer the pipe smoking ululations of progressive rockers. 2 from the Uppsala jury. |
| bitbanger (Upper West Side) | Posted: May 16, 2013 - 06:10 I know a lot of folks like this tune but when the children come in at the end the thing goes right over the top into pure bathos |
| Jelani (Home of the freak, land of the vague) | Posted: May 16, 2013 - 06:08 His horrid warbling completely obscures any 'beautiful message' the song might be trying to deliver. |
| Kimberly8 (Washington, DC) | Posted: May 12, 2013 - 06:24 I had no idea he was that beautiful!! |
| duduhead | Posted: Apr 29, 2013 - 21:15 Gents let's not be too cool for school. This is a gorgeous song that shall be consumed on those special occasions... think Sunday mornings and such. And it blows my mind that it was recorded just last year... I'm not an old geezer, but I can't help but think that these days mostly crap comes off the printing presses, which makes tunes and voices like one this even more special. |
| Tamster (Thousand Islands Canada) | Posted: Apr 29, 2013 - 18:17 Amazing ! Just amazing. |
| xkolibuul (Chuckanut sandstone) | Posted: Apr 14, 2013 - 23:03 Passionate, beautiful, and hugely important message. This song takes risks, but X delivers. |
| vladinecko | Posted: Mar 29, 2013 - 16:07 This song never fails to capture my attention. It's so simple and yet so captivating. The album art paints the exact picture that comes to my mind whenever I hear the song. I'm the kind of guy who doesn't pay much attention to the lyrics and focuses solely on the music. What I love about the structure of the song is how symmetric and gradual it is. It starts off very simple; voice, guitar, harmonic noise. It then builds up to an eventual breathtaking peak further accentuated by a gentle background of a children's choir. The song ends the same way it starts; guitar and vocals. As the title suggest, this track really carries a spiritual quality to it. I can almost imagine a gentle, warm breeze playing with my hair as I absorb the last rays of a fiery tropical sunset being slowly swallowed by the vast ocean. |
| michaelc (Walnut Creek, CA) | Posted: Mar 29, 2013 - 15:56 Don't work for me - way to repetitive. |
| shellbella (so california) | Posted: Mar 14, 2013 - 12:23 I really like this..... |
| mauguima (sewers) | Posted: Feb 07, 2013 - 06:36 Interesting like I'm starting to like more this song due to its "mantric" qualities, like repetition. Usually I don't like too much repetition in music, but in this song it's a positive thing. |
| Toke (Bournemouth UK) | Posted: Feb 07, 2013 - 06:33 Sung with such passion .. truely a 'SpiritGuy' |

| StoneyG (Just east of The Rockies; north of the 49th) | Posted: Jan 25, 2013 - 21:43 Pleeeeeease make it stop! It's really not that bad. It just quickly loses it's appeal or whatever is all, after the first several listens. |
