![]() Communiqué (1979) [ larger cover art ] |
Some people get a cheap laugh breaking up the speed limit
Scaring the pedestrians for a minute
Crossing up progress driving on the grass
Leaving just enough room to pass
Sunday driver never took a test
Oh yeah, once upon a time in the west
Yes it's no use saying that you don't know nothing
It's still gonna get you if you don't do something
Sitting on a fence that's a dangerous course
Oh, you could even catch a bullet from the peace-keeping force
Even the hero gets a bullet in the chest
Oh yeah, once upon a time in the west
Mother Mary your children are slaughtered
Some of you mothers ought to lock up your daughters
Who's protecting the innocenti
Heap big trouble in the land of plenty
Tell me how we're gonna do what's best
You guess once upon a time in the west
Oh yeah, once upon a time in the west
Oh yeah, once upon a time in the west
Oh yeah, once upon a time in the west
Once upon a time in the west

Then I realised that it was the album original, and grew up knowing the version from Alchemy... Now that is a superb rendition. Strange... The difference between the two is huge IMO. The Alchemy version has way more distortion on the guitar and Terry Williams' panic drumming doesn't even come close to the very subtle drums of Pick Withers in this version. Putting all of that aside, Knopfler puts an additional extra minutes of improvising to Alchemy's rendition. Anyway, both versions are fantastic, but not quite alike if you ask me... 10 |

Just one note & you know...they have such a distinct sound, which you can't say for very many bands. Plus, Mark Knopfler's voice is like buttah. Heh. To me his voice is like a dram of Macallan while sitting in a drafty pub on a cold, wet Scotland evening. Rough, yet so smooth and soothing, warming you from the inside. I flat out love this song, and so many others of his. I wish Bill would play the next three songs on the album (News/Where Do You Think You're Going/Communique) in sequence, just like he does DSoM. |

| mjmurphy61 (Saint Louis, MO) | Posted: Aug 29, 2012 - 09:32 Nothing sounds like this album. A genuinely creative approach to guitar playing and songwriting. IMHO.... |
| Smitix (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) | Posted: Aug 08, 2012 - 21:30 That was the very first CD I ever bought too! I saw & heard Dire Straits a couple of decades ago and really developed an appreciation for this guitar skills. His lyrics can be pretty fun too. | RainTarp (Boston) | Posted: Apr 11, 2012 - 06:48 I underappreciated Dire Straits until I got into Mark Knopfler's solo stuff (namely Sailing to Philadelphia). Now my ears are wide open for Dire Straits. |

| LowPhreak (United Corporate States of Neo-Feudal Amurika, Inc.) | Posted: Aug 31, 2011 - 09:11 Great drumming and bass line on this one too. Deserves at least a '9'. |
| drcrnp (Philly) | Posted: Aug 31, 2011 - 09:04 Mr. Knopfler can make crumbs here any old time |
| Chumbawamba-1984 (West Chester, OH) | Posted: Aug 15, 2011 - 19:13 The album title is Communiqué, not Communique. Now copy and paste ... |
| RobRyan (The lovely hills of Anaheim) | Posted: Jul 26, 2011 - 08:34 This is the Dire Straits song. There seems to be only one Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler song, though there are many different titles. |
| bluecshells (EARTH) | Posted: Jul 26, 2011 - 08:33 Can't get enough Dire Straits....love it. |
| (former member) | Posted: Jul 15, 2011 - 10:19 This is the first Dire Straits album I was exposed to, and the others are all inferior to it, IMHO. |

| BikeCoachDave (Columbia, Ky.) | Posted: Apr 27, 2011 - 08:50 As with a few other great songs on R.P., I am blown away that this song was released in '79. Before hair bands, amid the disco craze, when AM radio was actually a force in the market. Way ahead of its time and still fresh and unique. |
| Tippster (Washington, DC) | Posted: Apr 02, 2011 - 14:29 I love the way Knopfler tells tales through his guitar. |
| freddyb (Perth, Western Australia) | Posted: Mar 22, 2011 - 02:46 For me, their first two albums were the best. |
| GuiltyFeat | Posted: Jan 23, 2011 - 01:31 I get that I'm supposed to like old school Dire Straits, but I just can't get behind most of this stuff. Yawn. |

| Sjaaks (Horst, Netherlands) | Posted: Nov 05, 2010 - 01:55 Godlike for sure... The clean texas pickup sound of Mark's red strat and the touch of his fingers truely make for a unique sound.... To me, it touches all the right nerves... |

Any time I've seen Knopfler or the Straits he/they have played good long shows. Careful with the "semi-literate" jibes here folks. Given that his location says Cologne it is probable that English is a second language. Is your German as good as his English? Besides, he only moaned about the length of the gig, not the quality.... |
