![]() August and Everything After (1993) [ larger cover art ] |
When I think of heaven, deliver me in a black-winged bird,
I think of flying, down into a sea of pins and feathers,
And all other instruments of faith and sex and God,
In the belly of a black-winged bird, don't try to feed me,
'Cause I've been here before and I deserve a little more.
I belong in the service of the Queen,
I belong anywhere but in between,
She's been crying , I've been thinking,
And I am the Rain King.
Well I said, mama, mama, mama,
Why am I so alone? well I can't go outside,
I'm scared I might not make it home,
But I'm alive, I'm alive, but I'm sinking in,
If there's anyone at home at your place darlin'
Why don't you invite me in? don't try to bleed me,
'Cause I've been there before and I deserve a little more.
I belong in the service of the Queen,
I belong anywhere but in between,
She's been lying, I've been sinking,
And I am the Rain King.
Hey, I only want the same as anyone,
Henderson is waiting for the sun,
Oh it seems night endlessly begins and ends,
After all the dreaming I come home again.
When I think of heaven, deliver me in a black-winged bird,
I think of dying, lay me down in a field of flame and heather,
Render up my body into the burning heart of God
In the belly of a black-winged bird, don't try to bleed me,
'cause I've been here before and I deserve a little more.
I belong in the service of the Queen,
I belong anywhere but in between,
She's been dying and I've been drinking
And I am the Rain King,
Well I said I am the rain king,
Well I said I, I, I, I, I yeah,
Well I am the rain king, yeah.
| flyboy50 (Ohio Valley) | Posted: May 08, 2013 - 18:23 The best and last best album they put out. Miss you guys. |
| ziakut (Slightly North of Obvlivion) | Posted: Apr 07, 2013 - 14:27 Adam starts to grate the nerves for me. Good band, but vocalist is very one dimensional to me. |
| Sloggydog (UK) | Posted: Mar 09, 2013 - 00:28 I had to triple PSD away from Peter bloody won't leave me alone Gabriel to get here but hell of a song from an amazing album. Terrible shame none of their other albums even came close to matching it. |
| Paul_the_wonk (Ithaca, NY) | Posted: Jan 03, 2013 - 10:59 I loved this song when I was a kid. My dad bought this CD with our first CD player. |
| jmkate (nearly under a stack of books) | Posted: Oct 01, 2012 - 08:03 Such fantastic music today. But, then, isn't that why we're all here...carry on. |
| bluecshells (EARTH) | Posted: Mar 25, 2012 - 14:07 This song always sounds good. Seems a bit timeless. |
| Hr-Rosendahl (Skælskør Denmark) | Posted: Mar 25, 2012 - 14:07 One of my favourite album. Thank you for playing that for me. |
| yaelf | Posted: Jan 22, 2012 - 04:37 Thank you for reminding me of this song (and the album) |

Overall, this band doesn't interest me either, and the singer's voice generally annoys me, but this album had some good tunes on it - this is one of them (other than that screech at the end). |

| WonderLizard (2,755.46 mi. due east of Paradise) | Posted: Jul 16, 2011 - 18:15 Every summer there's one album that scores so indelibly that it earns the title—oh, it's not official—of that year's summer soundtrack. This was 1993's as much as Revolver and "Sunshine Superman" were in 1966. Great album. |

I never like saying a band has "sold out" or whatever but they certainly got poppier and lost the focus on display through most of this. A lot more to them than "Mr. Jones." |

| starlisa13 (Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands) | Posted: Jul 05, 2008 - 08:10 I saw them play on the tour promoting this album, opening for Cracker. Even though since then, they do get on my nerves, I have to admit it was one of the best shows I have ever seen. I 've always attributed it to the fact that they were just starting out and they were hungry. Yet 10+ years later, the intensity of Adam Duritz and band still sticks with me and ranks at the top of my favorite ever shows. gutboy wrote: yes, it seemed trite to me at first, but after I caught a film of these guys playing live, i saw an energy there not so apparent on the radio songs.
I gave another listen to this one and I can sense a struggle to keep a pent up rage from surfacing. the counting crows may consist of something more than what shows on the surface. or not |

| robadr (vancouver bc) | Posted: Aug 25, 2007 - 22:20 It may be formulaic, but they do it very well. Always liked Adam's voice - a mixture of vulnerabilty & damn the torpedos with a convincing 'everyman' sound to it. |

Most of the music I listen to and own is played hear; Bill and I are approximately the same age(closer than a lot of the gen X know it alls)and quite frankly, if Bill didn't like it, then it probably wouldn't get played in the first place. To all the R.E.M., Counting Crow haters out there, have a nice day! Bill and I will still be rockin to these great tunes regardless. Oh, and keep the listener support rollin in. I do. Careful there mister, a lot of us 'gen x know it alls' are the ones who kept R.E.M. CC and many other bands of that era around by going to shows and buying their music before we had a way to pirate it And many of my gen X pals are on the automatic contribution list too, so there |
