The history of the development of the big band, its origins with military brass bands and black musicians in New Orleans, its adoption of jazz and blues idioms, and its translation into the music of an era is fascinating. It's a listening journey that embraces everying from "Alexander's Rag Time Band" to "St. Louis Blues" to "Rhapsody in Blue" to "Sing, Sing, Sing" and so on. What's interesting is that in the very early days of rock'n'roll, the big band influence was pervasive. Bobby Darin's "Mack the Knife" was a big band vocal arrangement in the best tradition of Sinatra and Tommy Dorsey. And it wasn't uncommon for big bands (Lawrence Welk, Percy Faith, Nelson Riddle, Horst Jankowski) to put hits in the Top 40 well into the '60s. |

Truly "god like". Actually, Louis Prima wrote and recorded the original version of this tune, though the Goodman version is much more widely known. I like all three versions. |

Actually, this song is from the 30s. My all-time fave version is by Goodman et al. at Carnegie Hall in 1938. All-star band, great groove, very appreciative audience. I'm sure everyone whipped out their lighters at the end of the concert... Amen. This is good but doesn't hold a candle to Goodman's Carnegie Hall concert version recorded live. My dad had a dance band in the 30's and this was one of his favorite albums. I grew up on this and eventually played tenor sax (as he did-he also played tenor banjo and accordian) in our high school dance band. We played a lot of swing from the 30s and 40s era. |
