What a tune!

A great female singer who does this song great justice is Eva Cassidy. Her version of this is on the album - Imagine.

If I am going to like a song just for the quality of the vocals, then it's almost always because it's a woman singing.  No matter how good the voice is, though, I have to like the song for me to enjoy it.  A good voice cannot make a bad song good.  A bad voice can sing a good song.  I like this song, and her voice.

Its a shame the scale only goes to a 10. This is probably her most well known song but I never get tired tired of hearing it.  Judy Collins did a cover of it also before this version of Sandy's was recorded with FC and though its good it just doesn't hold a candle to Sandy..Sandy did other versions of this song including an earlier version with the Strawbs and its excellent also. Just wish they would play more of her here. I've uploaded many of her less heard songs but they never make it into the library.

I liked the haunting melody but didn’t really ‘get it’ as young man in the 70’s. As a 53 year old I certainly get it now. What I don’t understand is some of the hate comments for this song. The reason I listen to Radio Paradise is because its an eclectic station for grown ups. Much as I enjoy the “She loves me yeah, yeah, yeah” type songs I can also cope with the odd darker song particularly when it’s as hauntingly beautiful and poignant as this one.

Thank you, Bill. I was searching for the author of Who Knows..., always thought if was Judy Collins as well.  Sandy Denny, I have an old vinyl of hers I am going to dig out. A beautiful song and a great station as evidenced by the variety of the listeners you capture based on the comments below at least.

That's probably Richard Thompson - who is a remarkable guitarist - playing on this track.  Beautiful song.

I have to agree. Too much angst for far too long. Sandy has a lovely voice for the first two minutes but after that the nostalgia wore off and I was ready for something else.

I hate to admit this...because I know it captures a time a place a mood. But this is just painful. I think it's because there is no change in the intensity of the emotion expressed in her vocals at all. No build up, its like 4.5 minutes are straight pain and misery. I just don't get it. EVERY line can't be so filled with ennui and pain can it?

I went to a Richard Thompson concert recently.  He performed one of Sandy's old Fairport songs and said something I totally agreed with.  He said that he wished that Sandy's music would be rediscovered much like Nick Drake's music had.  That would be nice.

I can remember a DJ friend of mine played "Battle of Evermore" and then followed it with this Fairport Convention song - it was a stroke of genius.  This song is perfect for a lazy summer afternoon with a slight breeze, birds singing, the neighborhood dogs talking back and forth, and a slice of spiked watermelon while waiting for the grilled steaks...{#Sunny}
