Something's beating on the wall on the other side
Strange lovers moan each others names on by-hour sheets for the very first time
One of them's James, the other's some name, she changes every time she lies across his bed
But the light of the moon leads the way towards the morning
And the sun, the sun's well on the way too soon to know and
Oh, oh my god, whatever, etc.
If I could I'd fold myself away like a card table
A concertina or a murphy bed, I would
But I wasn't made that way so you know instead
I'm open all night and the customers come to stay
And everybody tips but not enough to knock me over
And I'm so tired, I just worked two shifts
But the light of the moon leads the way towards the morning
And the sun, the sun's well on its way too soon to know and
Oh, oh my god, oh my god, whatever, etc.

A smoking cigarette offers so many creative opportunities, but this is dull. The cigarette isn't the point, it's secondary - it's his posture, his expression, the composition of the photo. The rumpled jacket, matching his hair, his slouching back echoing the stretched hand. The image looks very casual and natural yet very graceful and posed - tough to balance both. The type isn't my favourite, but I like that it's in one simple sector at the top, and it's provides a clean contrast with the fluidity of the pose. The simple hit of colour is a good contrast with the black & white imagery. But the way that hard vertical edge in the middle top and the hard horizontal edge in the lower left creates a sector for his head, hands (and cig) and isolates against the rest of the scene make the image for me. And yet, with all this, it still looks like a casual snap-shot. Lovely work. |
