![]() Mystery To Me (1973) [ larger cover art ] |
Written by Bob Welch.
It's the same kind of story
That seems to come down from long ago
Two friends having coffee together
When something flies by their window
It might be out on that lawn
Which is wide, at least half of a playing field
Because there's no explaining what your imagination
Can make you see and feel
Seems like a dream
(They) got me hypnotized
Now it's not a meaningless question
To ask if they've been and gone
I remember a talk about North
Carolina and a strange, strange pond
You see the sides were like glass
In the thick of a forest without a road
And if any man's ever made that land
Then I think it would've showed
Seems like a dream
(They) got me hypnotized
They say there's a place down in Mexico
Where a man can fly over mountains and hills
And he don't need an airplane or some kind of engine
And he never will
Now you know it's a meaningless question
To ask if those stories are right
'Cause what matters most if the feeling
You get when you're hypnotized
Seems like a dream
(They) got me hypnotized

| nagsheadlocal (North Carolina, the new New Jersey) | Posted: Sep 10, 2012 - 07:12 This past weekend my partner and I drove down to the coast to catch some of the swell from Tropical Storm Leslie. As we were driving back I diverted off the new 4-lane into the old road, and drove past the "place in North Carolina" mentioned in the song. Nowadays I'm driving a nicer car than my old VW, but with the surfboards on top and this song on the radio, it was a nice trip back into the past. No sign of Satan at the tramping grounds, however. |

Some of those people, things, and connections live on only in memories, but that's the way it is. RIP, Bob Welch, and Thanks! |

The mid-career albums, with Welch's songwriting and Danny Kirwan's silvery guitar work, were always the most interesting to me. I can remember skateboarding in college with "Bare Trees" blasting out the window of my apartment. "Heroes Are Hard To Find" is a little gem of an album, and unjustly forgotten. My favorite version of FM as well. RIP Bob. |

| coloradojohn (A Mile High and then some, Cherry Creek, Denver) | Posted: Jun 09, 2012 - 13:11 Probably my FAVORITE Fleetwood Mac song, and definitely the one that got me into them, and kept me into them (at least this period of them and earlier stuff) after they went way over the top...Bob Welch was to me the best and most stabilizing thing for them, and at the same time, he supplied the catalystic vision and trippiness that took them where I loved and appreciated it all most. Also loved his Ebony Eyes and Sentimental Lady, that together with Seals & Crofts painted portraits of an era precious and etched in Time... Bob, you shall SHINE ON! |
