I used to enjoy listening to this simger but now it grates on me how she sings one-syllable words with two- or three-syllables. Buh-uhgs me-ee :)

Dire, painful to listen to. Sorry. If you want a British singer songwriter that can sing put some Martha Tilston on your playlist.

You are way, way off.  I wasn't remotely trying to piggyback on another music critic.  I happen to like Beth Orton and wasn't trying to criticize the song.
All my original comment was saying was that I found the other comment hilarious.  If I laugh at a joke told by Louis CK, does that mean I'm trying to be a comic or even agreeing with the statement he made by his joke?  Some things are just funny.
So you call me "bankrupt" on account of that?  It appears you're the one with "easy cynicism."

F'ing troll.

Ditto to the comments below.  Who told these folks they could sing?  And they recorded it just to have proof how badly they vocalize!  You should 86 this one, Mr. B.

Iwas just thinking, what a sweet song this is, makes me feel good.
I came to find out what album it's on and rate it, and I see I've previously given it a ONE!!!
I have no idea what I was thinking!!!
Although her breathy styling often irritates me, I find I like this very much!!
I think 7 or 8 is in order...

I love Beth Orton. Saw her at ACL Fest one year, she was wonderful. Maybe, just maybe, she's out of tune on purpose? Discordant, even? She don't exactly sing feel-good tunes, so out-of-tune may be the POINT. Ever listen to Hank Williams? Sometimes he sounds more like a wounded animal than a human. On purpose. 'Art' ain't always about 'beauty'. c.

Yes indeed there do seem to be some intonation issues at play here. The male voice really subtracts from the whole. The idiosyncratic qualities of Beth Orton's singing and writing do not always work so well.

Today certainly is a milestone. I am now going on almost ten years as big RP fan and now I play this game...essentially what is my least (and most of course) favorite song in whole canon. Wow! we have a winner; this is by far the worst song I have ever heard on here. It's sort of amazing actually. it takes bad to a higher plane

Eww... who's singing harmonies? He shouldn't be, because what he's singing isn't harmony, it's something close sometimes, and NOT a lot of the rest of the time.

I like some Beth Orton stuff, but this one would definitely benefit from everyone trying to stay on key (including the bass player).  Kind of sounds like a record on an old record player that is not spinning evenly (speeding up and slowing down).  Not a big fan of this one.

I'm surprised by the negative comments about this one. For me the lolloping beat and guitar work, and the vocals on top (backing provided by Terry Callier) just make for a relaxed Sunday morning of a song which goes on and on (and should then preferably be followed by a long Van Morrisson song and another cup of coffee.)

But then if we all agreed about everything, where would the fun be? One man's mute button is another's volume crank...

RP does not have a mute button, your computer media player has a mute button. That Syracuse water has clouded your brain (as it has mine {#Drunk}). See you at Middle Ages!

But I agree with you. . . this song is pretty bad. Not up to Beth's standard's of excellence. Time to put on some Porcupine Tree and step back and chill out.

I was wondering if there was something wrong with me, cause, not knowing the song, it seemed to me really off key.

But i just read few comments hereunder and feel better to see i'm not the only one to get that.

Never heard a song off key on a radio before.... strange, but funny.

It's surely to test if we are really listening, istn'it? ;)
