I'm sipping Flor De CaƱa* and lime juice, it's three a.m.
Blow a fruit fly off the rim of my glass
The radio's playing Superchunk and the friends of Dean Martinez
Midnight it was bike tires whacking the pot holes
Milling humans' shivering energy glow
Fusing the space between them with bar-throb bass and laughter
If this were the last night of the world
What would I do?
What would I do that was different
Unless it was champagne with you?
I learned as a child not to trust in my body
I've carried that burden through my life
But there's a day when we all have to be pried loose
If this were the last night of the world
What would I do?
What would I do that was different
Unless it was champagne with you?
I've seen the flame of hope among the hopeless
And that was truly the biggest heartbreak of all
That was the straw that broke me open
If this were the last night of the world
What would I do?
What would I do that was different
Unless it was champagne with you?

I'd love to share a glass of champagne with a precious soul, whether it was my best friend or my brother. Of course, I'd also love to swim in the ocean, climb a 300-foot tower and take pictures, learn to ride a horse, and see Norway, Finland, and Scotland for the first time, and Montréal again. This song makes me rethink how I'm living my life, and what better accomplishment can an artist have than to impact a listener's perception enough to make them want to make changes? Probably with "I'm Gonna Fly Some Day" or "The End of All Rivers". |

Nice job Bruce. isocky: "Lighten up, Francis" art does not follow rules and that is part of what makes it good. |

Might I recommend the film "Last Night"? The plot is the World has six hours left. People have known for months when it was going to end and have prepared for it in different ways but of course, some things don't work out according to plan. A very odd but compelling film (IMHO) |

Same goes with the odious Richard Wagner, who put out some of the world's greatest music. There are still boycotts of his work in many parts of the world. I think it is a mistake. I don't see how it's possible to separate the artist's (or athlete's) work from who they are as a person. Doesn't work for me at all. |

| Cynaera (South of Neanderthal) | Posted: Jun 23, 2009 - 16:43 I commented on this song a long time ago, and my opinion still stands. I had a friend in Montréal who said he had no respect for Bruce Cockburn and that he was "a self-involved asshole," and maybe that's true - I wouldn't know. All I do know is that he did a radio spot in Texas about a million years ago, and my beloved friend Dana (who was working as a volunteer at the station at the time) knew I really liked his music, so when he showed up for his spot, she got his autograph for me. I still have it on my fridge. Yeah, I know - an autograph, for the giver, is a huge ego-boost, and I really don't care if Bruce Cockburn is a jerk. I love his music. And yeah, "If I Had A Rocket Launcher" might seem like a hypocritical statement, considering he can afford to wear Gucci and Gaultier. Why should his wardrobe make a difference? (Of course, if he starts wearing KImodo dragon-skin boots, I may have to rethink my position on this.) I love the earth - I try to recycle (the word "try" is operative here, because where I live, there are no recycling facilities within four hours' drive, which is totally alien to what I was used to when I lived in Salem, Oregon, where we had recycling people picking up our broken glass, plastic, cardboard, used motor oil, and aluminum from the streetside where we put them in their tidy colored plastic containers.) Here, there might be a place to turn in aluminum cans and maybe metal, but it's at least six months away (because they have the scales to weigh the stuff, but for some weird bureaucratic reason, there are "permits" they need to get first.) I can understand Mr. Cockburn's music - he rails against injustice, idiocy, and mindless thinking. So do we all, in one form or another... |
