Some folks trust to reason
Others trust to might
I don't trust to nothing
But I know it come out right
Say it once again now
Oh I hope you understand
When it's done and over
Lord, a man is just a man
Playing
Playing in the band
Daybreak
Daybreak on the land
Some folks look for answers
Others look for fights
Some folks up in treetops
Just look to see the sights
I can tell your future
Look what's in your hand
But I can't stop for nothing
I'm just playing in the band
Playing
Playing in the band
Daybreak
Daybreak on the land
Standing on a tower
World at my command
You just keep a turning
While I'm playing in the band
If a man among you
Got no sin upon his hand
Let him cast a stone at me
For playing in the band
Playing
Playing in the band
Daybreak
Daybreak on the land
Playing
Playing in the band
Daybreak Daybreak on the land
Others trust to might
I don't trust to nothing

Then again, they could take you to places you never thought you'd visit. I couldn't agree more. I was a late starter. Saw them 6 times in 94 and 6 times in 95, West Coast shows. Amazing life changing experience. Saw The Dead in 03 and 04. Did full tour those times. Not the same without Jerry but still good fun. |

| bam23 (Berkeley) | Posted: Apr 25, 2008 - 13:59 Thank you. Somehow this is the perfect song to come out of my computer. Even this rather restricted live version is fine. This song was generally the jumping off point for excursions into the vast beyond. There are some amazing versions out there that venture from this song into as many as 4 more, including Uncle John's Band, then recursively end up with Playing in the Band after 30 minutes. My wife thought of this approach as the nested do loop motif. |
| drumthat (Switzerland) | Posted: Mar 25, 2008 - 02:15 my very personal recommendation: take the live recordings "closing of winterland". I listened to Dark Star more the one hundred times during the last 25 years, and it's still one of the greatest guitar & band solo thing that ever happened. |
| WonderLizard (2,755.46 mi. due east of Paradise) | Posted: Feb 22, 2008 - 14:36 When this album first came out, this song, "Me and My Uncle," and "Me and Bobbie McGee" were the ones I kept going back to. This was a boogie band that I'd seen do "The Other One," "St. Stephen," etc. many, many times that could lay down a short song with as much panache as the long, meandering suites. Although today they have as many detractors as apologists, they were special then and, I think, still. Without them, could there be/have been a Phish, moe, String Cheese Incident, Widespread Panic? I'd say not. |

Can't agree on the Pink Floyd / Beach Boys, but the popularity of the Dead has always puzzled me. Maybe massive doses of LSD are required? (Cool cover art though; Rick Griffin?) |
