Funny story about me & this song.
When Linda sang it I always thought she said

"Drivin the back roads so I wouldn't get laid"

Which for a female truck driver makes a lot of sense - staying away from the truck stops and the other truck drivers.

Could be a true possibility, unfortunately......

perhaps already noted earlier in the comments, but I had heard somewhere Lowell wrote this while with the Mothers, and Frank said No to it- why dont you do it yourself? Thus was Little Feat born. Thanks, Frank! and rest in peace.

Sailin' Shoes was their second album, released in 1972... Willin' comes after Tripe Face Boogie on the album— both incredible songs... it is a great album... love it...

Yes!  More Little Feat is better...  bumper stickers should be issued.

Dylan was doing a great cover of this one a few years back..  well, maybe a bit more than a few now but still.  GREAT stuff.

Thank you! Little Feat rocks!

Sweet lyrics too.

I've been kicked by the wind, robbed by the sleet
Had my head stoved in, but I'm still on my feet and I'm still... willin'
Now I smuggled some smokes and folks from Mexico
Baked by the sun, every time I go to Mexico, and I'm still

And I been from Tuscon to Tucumcari
Tehachapi to Tonapah
Driven every kind of rig that's ever been made
Driven the back roads so I wouldn't get weighed
And if you give me: weed, whites, and wine
And you show me a sign
I'll be willin', to be movin

A bit slow... Took me a while to catch what he was saying at the end of the chorus (weed, whites, and wine)

I hear you.  My part of the country is different, and it wasn't my Dad, but my friends on the state roads around Tuscaloosa (and in my case, there *was* some wine and weed involved), but this song and album are deeply connected to my psyche and feelings about my youth.  "Little Feat," "Sailin' Shoes," and "Dixie Chicken" should be in the collection of all self-respecting rock aficionados.  They are classic, beautiful, funny, essential albums, done by a musical genius who died too early....
