I had an instant, negative, visceral response - this must be what the sucko-barfo tier is for; however, I've refrained from going there, so far. I'm sure it will be over soon. (...love this song, like Indigo Girls, do not like this)

This song was also covered quite nicely by Sarah Mclachlan. She seems to capture all the sadness at what should be a happy time of year, just like Joni wanted it. And like an earlier poster commented, "I made my baby say goodbye" just kills me everytime I hear it.

i think you have to take this song in the context of the album off of which it comes, which is live. if you listen to it in the context of that, it's not *so* bad.

but, taken alone, it's only tolerable (sort of).

or maybe i am just way way way over the indigo girls. :-)

I tend to feel the same way -- I'm still not done throwing furniture over the Counting Crows' cover of "Big Yellow Taxi." But this one works beautifully for me, I think partly because Amy and Emily have such expressive voices and because they have the good sense to keep the accompaniment so subdued.

The more I hear the Indigo Girls, the less I like hearing them.

I think she does a good job with a very difficult cover.

Believe it or not, Robert Downey Jr. does a great cover version of this Joni classic.

But this blows.

"I made my baby say goodbye." It doesn't get any more heartbreaking than that. There are many ways to get this song right, but I think this is my favorite.

Heart does a nice version of this one on their "The Road Home" CD.

This is also nice.

Thanks for playing this Bill - Emily sites Joni as one of her biggest influences and I think she does a fine job on this song. Beautiful. I heard her sing it once and bawled my head off. :)
