No, it's an old Lord Kitchener song - you could call it "classic soca" - "Gimme De Ting" or "Gee Me The Ting" is how you can google it; here's a youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcOpbtGeTsM ... but no real video, just a travel poster. And here's a different recording with a different feel, and real, real cool (this is the one I heard way back when when I got turned on to it) - check the bari sax: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gawMF6PQPuU&feature=related The El Rayo X vibe on this song is cool but not quite authentic - but so what? The production is clear and the playing is hip (though Kitchener's bass player does less and plays it groovier) - the best thing in it for me is the percussion. Usually, playing every instrument in the kit is a weakness, but this guy is really driving the song - and, if you can dig this, he's matching the sophisticated wit of the song with his playing (great sounding cymbals, too), and he's nicely up in the mix and gets a wide pan, too. He's right up there with the guys from Los Lobos as my favortie musicians of all time. Ok I have to share a story here - I carried out the rider on a David Lindley contract in the late 80s. I completely bore everyone with this story at the drop of a hat, now it's your turn. I picked them up in the student union van at their hotel, took them to the restaurant. We had one whole floor to ourselves and the guys became very animated. No heirarchy here, the 1 roadie on the tour was there, and they let me sit next to David. Polyester was discussed: David to the slightly hefty roadie "you'd be a dangerous weapon in polyester". But the conversation that actually changed my life was the one they had about music criticism. The Cuban drummer just ripped in to critics "they are students, they don't know anything ... they hire no-nothings to write about us." Everyone agreed. I remember that moment like yesterday, because at the time I happened to be the writing music reviews for the local paper. I haven't ever written about music since, it was way too close to home. The rest of the evening continued from the banal to the bizarre (forgot to tip the restaurant; David smelling the bread in the dressing room; groupie propositioning David; me too drunk to drive the guys back to their hotel; discussion about Jamaican politics; and the kicker, did I mention that the whole time it was -25 outside? They loved that!) |
