An equivalent is American usage of the word 'mad' or 'bitchin' to describe something ecstatic. Its meaning developed from sexually aroused (since the 15th century) over sexually attractive in the 1970s and 1980s to attractive in general. Today "to be 'geil'" has lost its offensive character nearly completely. "Geil" is now only sexually explicit in the phrase "to make someone 'geil'" (= to make someone horny) In dutch it means "too be horny" too, but it doesn't mean 'cool' or 'awesome'. We laugh a little when we here germans use this slang. ;-) |

My brother is a classically trained musician and he always says that although he's not a big fan of the band, he has an appreciation for their music because from a music theory standpoint, there is a lot of layering and complexity in it. I don't know beans about music theory, so I'll take his word for it. |
