Interesting that both this and the Portishead versions debuted here in December 2001 (near RP's beginning and 4.5 years before my discovery). Yet I came to know the Portishead version first and loved it enough to add it to my Radio Paradise Favorites playlist. I like this version, too, but probably wouldn't have picked it up.

In theory an original artist sets the bar for all others to follow. Some covers are arguably better than the original  - many fall short. As a big JM fan just hearing that slurry, drooling, gravelly voice hits home that an artist can bring different things to the same song and turn the song into something they own. Portishead set the bar without doubt, but in the genre they intended the song to be performed. JM's performance is in his own inimitable genre. Great song.

I already know how everyone else does it! Give me something new I say! This song is exactly what a cover should be. It's something different from the original, a new take, he's taken the song and made it his own.

Well put, thanks Funky.  To Stingray I say:  "Right, and we all live in a 1-dimensional universe where all that exists or matters are the originals.  God help you if you try to do something after the original and put your own spin on it; for instance, after Michaelangelo, every painter into perpetuity really blows, Bach has doomed every single composer after him to 2nd tier status at best, and to all of the programmers, plumbers, lawyers, nurses, chefs, etc..., you too are only 2nd rate in this universe because you aren't the original.  C'mon, let's ease up on the judgement, because none of us is perfect."

True enough, and the lyrics make a lot more sense when sung by a woman. Yer man Martyn did some grand stuff in his long career, I hear, but this cover's a real turkey.

Wow, I just stepped out for a coffee and missed it. Too bad. I can't imagine an improvement on Portishead's original. It doesn't sound like the late John Martyn's version quite hit the mark. Hopefully, his detractors aren't dissuaded. His early/mid-stuff was fantastic, though I think, like many, his offerings got a bit thin later on. At his best, he was on par with contemporary Nick Drake, who managed to make three perfect albums in his short life. (I often wonder what Drake's material would've been like had his career been longer. Even the best songwriters, Dylan, etc, usually serve up a few duds in their career.) Anyway, people should check Martyn's Bless the Weather or Solid Air to hear him at his best.

I'm not sure if I'd consider the original version is "more languid" than this one, but I find Portishead's version more sexy and profound.  I find it thoroughly better than this version - though this isn't that bad really.

Right on Bill!!!  It was just yesterday that I had a very strong hankerin' to hear this — no kidding.  Yer a mind reader you are.

I just figured out why this version is so appealing to me, despite Portisehead's really stellar version, and that is that this strikes me as having the same sort of street creds that Johnny Cash's version lends to NIN's Tear.  Both Martyn and Cash truly lived the life that leads to the anguish of these songs and it so clearly shows in their renditions of other people's music.
