Calling Pops Staples "craptastic faux" is pretty close to libelous.  He's got Jackson Browne (who wrote the song) and Bonnie Raitt singing backup vocals with him - that he recognizes the relevance of the song, even today, is a testament to how very perceptive he is.

I'd be interested to know what you think is "real" music, because it doesn't get much more real than Pops Staples, unless you want to delve into Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, BB King, et. al.

Pops was one of the true great of 20th Century American music. As a young man he saw virtually every great blues player, including Charley Patton, Robert Johnson and Willie Brown and learned his craft from them.

You should surely listen to old Staple Singers stuff, leslie! Pop Staples with his three daughters, of whom Mavis Staples got most famous (she's still active and worked with Prince, not too long ago), sang the sort of gospel, that would make an atheist fall on his knees and pray! ;)

I've heard Jackson Browne mention during a concert what a big fan he is of the Staple Singers, so I guess he managed to work something out with Pops.
