One of the greatest pop songs ever produced, but sadly under the radar.

Don't bother with the Best Of  albums(s) go for Fickle Heart and The Game's Up albums and you have 90% of the best of their work.  Some pop, some meaningful songs, but all of them good or better.  For examples, check out "What Can Daddy Do?" and "Poison Pen Mail", "Rodeo Drive" and "Slide Away" from those albums.  All available on Spotify.

I always thought they meant Sniff & the Tears, as in "I'm starting to cry, "... sniff ... and the tears.  I certainly don't know, just have my own assumption and opinion.  (Although the cover art certainly wasn't composed in "these days".)
  
Of course, it could be cocaine, like our nasally-experienced colleague has mentioned below.
