As it droned on, I leapt into action.  Fired up the PC and...damn, I already gave it a 1 - Sucko Barfo.   What to do now?  Ahh, followed up by Porcupine Tree...  Salvation!

This woman is an artist in every sense of the word.  Sublimely gifted, we are blessed that she shares with us. {#Meditate}

As with all artistic expression, beauty is in the eye (or ear) of the beholder.  That said, her seemingly effortless expression of her art should not be mistaken for lack of passion or love.

I agree with Antigone about technical perfection. But she has an added something that brings it home.
I wish she had more relaxed, from -the-center-of-the-song, feeling...maybe as she ages.
Still, she has nice control and good choices in music. Violin and drums are great. Nice gypsy-ish feel...

Some singers sing from the outside-in and do a great job. They just leave me wishing for more
Some sing from the inside-out and may me wish the songs would last forever.

I guess it's closest to the technical professionalism of porn or sex-for-hire vs being truly-deeply loved.
They may look the same but are worlds apart. Me-? I'll take love every time and pass on the pro's.

You get out what you put into it, as a listener as well... you can say that about most professionally trained singers. (Loreena McKennitt studied classical piano and vocal training). Loreena actually travels to historic, cultural places and writes some of her songs about them, besides singing/playing traditional. McKennitt's lyrics have reflected her interests in the poetry of W.B. Yeats, William Blake, and Alfred Lord Tennyson

I find a great deal of feeling in her vocals... (but I karaoke along with her, mimicry is great vocal training ;)... my current favorite is Banks of Claudy... (one of the happier endings).

It's hard to believe this album came out so long ago - it's as fresh as yesterday.  Loreena's the best!

Technically pretty. Pretty doesn't sound technical to me. Pretty implies emotion.

I would have said it lacks honesty. I can't put my finger on it, but why can those pasty Brits, Led Zeppelin, pull off the Eastern-inspired stuff so well, unlike this stuff?

That instrument is a hurdy gurdy. Very interesting sounds come out of that instrument.

Also used on the Plant/Page album No Quarter to good effect.

I've heard them sound like everything from Bag Pipes to Violins.
