Sprawling on the fringes of the city
In geometric order
An insulated border
In between the bright lights
And the far unlit unknown
Growing up it all seems so one-sided
Opinions all provided
The future pre-decided
Detached and subdivided
In the mass production zone
Nowhere is the dreamer
Or the misfit so alone
(Subdivisions)
In the high school halls
In the shopping malls
Conform or be cast out
(Subdivisions)
In the basement bars
In the backs of cars
Be cool or be cast out
Any escape might help disprove
The unattractive truth
But the suburbs have no charms to soothe
The restless dreams of youth
Drawn like moths we drift into the city
The timeless old attraction
Cruising for the action
Lit up like a firefly
Just to feel the living night
Some will sell their dreams for small desires
Or lose the race to rats
Get caught in ticking traps
And start to dream of somewhere
To relax their restless flight
Somewhere out of a memory
Of lighted streets on quiet nights
(Subdivisions)
In the high school halls
In the shopping malls
Conform or be cast out
(Subdivisions)
In the basement bars
In the backs of cars
Be cool or be cast out
Any escape might help disprove
The unattractive truth
But the suburbs have no charms to soothe
The restless dreams of youth
| Greyjoca (Cambridge, Massachusetts) | Posted: Apr 01, 2013 - 18:32 Thank you thank you thank you this is amazing to hear and thank you for playing Rush in your awesome mix from so many master musicians this evening! You rock! This rocks! Thank you thank you! |
| joelbb | Posted: Apr 01, 2013 - 18:31 Someone just shoot the vocalist. Sucko-barfo, like their entire canon. |
| psg (Ottawa) | Posted: Mar 01, 2013 - 07:44 I saw Neal Peart on TV a few years back (Rick Mercer's CBC show for those of here in Canada). He told the old (?) riddle: What did the drummer get on his IQ test? Answer: Drool. I had never heard that one before. |
| WonderLizard (2,755.46 mi. due east of Paradise) | Posted: Mar 01, 2013 - 07:44 Let's have a Neil Peart vs. Gavin Harrison smack down. |
| jkamm14 (NJ, USA) | Posted: Mar 01, 2013 - 07:40 Between this song and Arcade Fire's "The Suburbs", why hasn't anyone done something about the terrible Canadian suburbs?!!?!? (I assume they're a lot like American suburbs, just with more hockey and back bacon.) |
| Sasha2001 (The business end of Bloomberg's education machine.) | Posted: Dec 28, 2012 - 16:07 Since when did hating Rush become so popular? I personally like the synth and Neil Peart could make a balsa wood drum kit sound awesome. i'm not sure how I feel about the Rush haters, but pity comes to mind. |
| michaelc (Walnut Creek, CA) | Posted: Dec 28, 2012 - 16:03 Ohhhhh that just hurts

| buddy | Posted: Dec 28, 2012 - 16:03 Great to hear a little more Rush being worked in, Bill! |
| Keef (Confluence of the American River) | Posted: Dec 28, 2012 - 16:01 Happy to see Rush finally made it into the R&R Hall of Fame. Well deserved for many years of great (and not so great) music. |
| xxxcrj | Posted: Nov 27, 2012 - 07:16 Variety is a key to life and Radio Paradise represents that outlet. Thanks for including Rush. |
| tutakea | Posted: Nov 27, 2012 - 07:11 This is HILARIOUSLY bad. It's practically a Spinal Tap-worthy parody of really bad, overblown 70s rock, but is even more funny because it's real. okay. not my words - lol but i could not find better ones ... |
| Sjaaks | Posted: Nov 27, 2012 - 07:11 Wow! This is a whole new approach at the definition of horrible... |

I also didn't like Rush when I was a kid because of their fans, but in a different way. Where I grew up, the only kids I knew that listened to Rush were the burnouts, stoners, and bullies. I figured if Rush was what those guys listened to, I wasn't going to have anything to do with it. Boy, did I miss out. As an adult, I have developed a great appreciation for Rush and they are now one of my favorite bands. |

I credit our English founding fathers with our great Democracy, though maybe not so much for our great beer. America is a fabulous country. It has all kinds of depth and strength that even Americans like to forget. Any critical comments are because some of us love America and actually care. Part of that is self-serving. A strong America is good for Canada, Norway and other smaller western countries. Are we good rdo?

I never cared for very much of their material, though I know quite a few people who do. I respect these guys, though, for just doing what they want, and being comparatively sincere and skilled about it. If it really bugs me when one of their tunes comes on, I can change the station - no big deal. |
| kurtster (Back in Ohiya, for now ...) | Posted: Jan 16, 2012 - 08:40 A staple here in old Cleve town, they were much loved and pretty much broke out south of the border from Cleveland. They love Cleveland so much they decided to make their last live effort from the Cleveland show they just did. This particular concert was planned to be saved for posterity from its inception. This is really the first time I've heard them on a rig that is pretty decent. They sound much better than I remember when they were just background noise in the daily grind. |
